Recently my husband and I, along with our dear friends, had the great pleasure and privilege of exploring a place we had long wished to visit. We took a week to rejuvenate and unwind in Ireland, breaking away from our daily routine, jobs, and caring for children.

On our trip, we quickly learned that the Irish are inherently charming, unpretentious, and very welcoming to tourists, despite past invasions, religious conflicts, and other significant losses.

The beautiful and mesmerizing landscape, friendly locals, and jubilant social scene of Ireland kept us enchanted and engaged as we explored different regions of this fairytale land. Due to its vast greenery, Ireland is often referred to as the Emerald Isle. Tales, folklore, and mythology led our journey and helped us understand the uniqueness of each kingdom. Wherever you are in Ireland, castles and tower houses are only a stone’s throw away, and a new adventure awaited us at every turn in the road.

Our Guide to a 9 to 10 Day Itinerary to Ireland

Our Guide to a 9 to 10 Day Itinerary to Ireland

Our itinerary involved exploring the most captivating scenery, from coastlines to open fields filled with grazing sheep, cows, and horses.

Emerald isle Ireland open fields filled with grazing sheep, cows, and horses

We enjoyed pubs and live music in neighborhood-like towns while locals convened with violins and drums, playing eclectic yet classic Irish tunes.  Abbeys, castles, and churches emerged around unforeseen curves in the road, causing tourists like us to detour and break away from our carefully planned itineraries suddenly.

Although we had been thoroughly prepared to embrace the classically rainy Irish weather, our trip consisted of warm sunny days and beautiful crisp mornings.  To our amusement and excitement, the locals declared that we were enjoying Ireland’s “best” weather since 1976.  We were thrilled and grateful to have long days to explore the many wonders we encountered.

Although Ireland is ideally visited from mid-May through September, the weather is typically rainy and chilly, even during peak season.  Tourists expecting sunshine and short sleeves might be disappointed to learn that summer on the Emerald Isle typically brings afternoon rains with temperatures lingering in the 50s and 60s. Plan on packing rain gear and layers and embrace the weather as part of the charm and identity of this country.

Although we had carefully planned our route to maximize our time, a week is not long enough to see and experience all we had hoped.  Preferably, plan for 9-10 days to explore several counties like Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry, Clare, and Galway.

Emerald Isle

Dublin

Dublin is a vibrant city on a river.  A walk along the enchanting Liffey River gives a sense of everyday life in this metropolis.  Tourists, politicians, and business professionals mingle with local crowds patronizing the more than 100 pubs which line the banks. On the Northside of Liffey, stroll the trendy street of O’Connell.  South of Liffey is Trinity College and the trendy (but old streets) of Temple Bar.  For beer enthusiasts who wish to tours the Guinness brewery or whiskey fans excited to experience the Jameson Distillery, keep in mind that you are not alone, and Dublin tours are best booked well in advance.

While walking in Dublin, explore the campus of Trinity College (including its extravagant library and plush gardens). Next, visit the grounds of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the adjacent Christ Church Cathedral. Next, go to Phoenix Park, arguably the most beautiful park in Dublin (not to mention one of the largest parks in Europe). Meander to the Hole in the Wall for a refreshment, maybe two.  If traveling with small children, you will also want to stop by the Dublin Zoo, conveniently located in Phoenix Park.

While it is tempting to choose the touristy Temple Bar area to quench your thirst and hunger, we recommend that you venture further out to experience a more authentic side of the bustling city. For modern Irish-European cuisine, try Winding Stair or Woolen Mills, sister restaurants located on the north side of the Liffey on Ormond Quay.  For fine dining, The Greenhouse, Shanahan’s, Stoop Your Head, and Mulberry Tree also comes highly recommended by our Irish friends.

Our preferred suppliers in Dublin include the Westin, Fitzwilliam Hotel, Merrion Hotel, and Westbury.  Book your stay at any of these properties with BTA and receive additional amenities such as complimentary breakfast daily, food & beverage credits, welcome amenities and upgrades, early check-in, and late check-out upon availability.

Day Trip to Northern Ireland from Dublin

Day Trip to Northern Ireland from Dublin

Northern Ireland is a popular full-day trip from Dublin, with tours starting at 6:45 am and returning to Dublin around 8/8:30 pm.  Tours typically include the romantic Dark Hedges, spectacular Giant’s Causeway (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), scenic Ballintoy Harbour, mysterious Cushendun Caves, and the metropolitan city of Belfast. Many visitors to Belfast stop to honor and remember the many lives lost at the Titanic Memorial Garden.  Allow two to three nights in Dublin to incorporate an experience of Northern Ireland into your itinerary. Consider spending the night for a more relaxed and unhurried excursion or booking a day or multi-day tour of Northern Ireland.

Kilkenny

Undeniably we fell in love with Kilkenny. A beautiful and charming, quintessentially Irish town with a population of just over 26,500 and a reasonable drive from Dublin (less than 2 hours heading south), it is not to be missed! This town is also home to one of the finest castles in Ireland, also of the same name – Kilkenny Castle.

St. Canice’s Cathedral is equally impressive.  Plan on spending a full day in the downtown area. Travelers quickly lose sight of time walking along the cobblestone streets of Kilkenny, exploring art galleries and boutique shopping and the medieval ruins around town.

Kilkenny, not surprisingly of Ireland, offers a lively pub and food scene. For example, take Langton’s Restaurant and Bar voted Pub of the Year by various outlets so many times it no longer participates in competitions.  Left Bank is another hot spot with live music and different dining scenes within the same establishment, from casual to more upscale.

Kilkenny

Situated 20 minutes outside of Kilkenny is the charming Mount Juliet Estate.  This spectacular property is also home to a Jack Nicklaus golf course, which proudly hosted the 2002 and 2004 WGC-American Express Championship and the European Tour’s Irish Open on three occasions between 1993 and 1995.  Despite its worthy namesake on the golf circuit, this luxury retreat equipped with a spa, lavish gardens, archery, horses, and other recreational activities is “a hidden gem” to most foreign travelers.  When traveling from downtown Kilkenny provide yourself enough time before dark to make way to your hotel. It truly is a maze spanning from the main drags onto the single-lane roads to your fortress for the night.

Expect to meet local and other Irish travelers.  We met folks who reside within the vicinity of Kilkenny and other Irish visitors from Cork and Clare, enjoying a weekend holiday away.  Oblivious to the passage of time, we became obsessed with learning how to see this great country like the Irish.  Our new friends, Mary and Mike, both well-traveled winos and foodies (as well as hurling enthusiasts, the “national” sport of Ireland), kindly shared their wealth of knowledge and personal experiences. Let’s say we learned the “craic.” A common phrase used in Ireland to describe whether you have any news or gossip is “What’s the craic?”

If staying two nights in Kilkenny, consider a day trip to Waterford (about 30-minute drive south).

Cork

Cork

This 800-year old city (population approximately 195,000) is a city worth stopping to see on your trek from coast to coast.  Cork is probably best known internationally for its proximity to Blarney Castle, where visitors are invited to kiss the famed stone. In return, they are said to receive the gift of eloquence. Unfortunately, our time did not permit an overnight in Cork; however, this place should be on your itinerary for the culinary experience alone.

The Ring of Kerry

It’s said in Kerry that “There are only two kingdoms, the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Kerry.” Ring of Kerry is best traveled by car in a counterclockwise direction, but any traveler to this magical place should make it a goal to get lost here.  Hotel accommodations and bed & breakfast populate Kenmare, Killarney, and Dingle.  Kenmare is a village town with an intimate setting; whereas, Killarney or Dingle is a bit more touristy but still maintains their unique identities.

The Ring of Kerry

A must-do for the active hiker and Star Wars fan is a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Skellig Islands.  On the summit of this breathtaking rock is a well-preserved sixth-century monastic settlement, standing 714ft above sea level.  The landing tour to Skellig Islands sells out months in advance, with only a limited number of boats allowed daily onto the island.

Stay in Killarney or a surrounding area for a minimum of two to three nights, and arrive at least a day before you tour Skellig Islands.  Plan on enjoying time at Killarney National Park, visiting the lively downtown, and, if time permits, take a day trip to Dingle (which is further northwest along the coast).

Clare

UNESCO Global Geoparks, Cliffs of Moher, and Burren are must-sees during your time in Clare.  Expect murky weather, but in our opinion, the fogginess along the hike up the cliffs only adds to the mystery of this magnificent site.  Our accommodations in Clare provided us the royal treatment and exceptional amenities.  We stayed at the recently renovated Dromoland Castle, which has been welcoming guests since the 16th century.

Clare

Although not in Clare County, another great castle to experience royal accommodations in Ireland is the Adare Manor Hotel, located just about an hour further south.

Galway

Our next trip to Ireland will undoubtedly include visiting Ireland’s bustling 5th largest city, Galway.  This city is popularly known as the “City of the Tribes” in honor of its founders – 14 families from distinctly different backgrounds.  Galway continues to be a place of celebration of individuality and diversity.  Venture about 45 minutes further north from Galway to experience a captive stay at Ashford Castle’s 13th-century building.

Transportation

Many tourists prefer a self-driving itinerary through Ireland.  While driving in Ireland is a little intimidating, traveling on these narrow, winding roads is part of the excitement.  Before you leave your trip, be sure to seek guidance on rental car insurance.  Major landmarks and directions to cities are well marked. However, the traffic and conditions of the roads, not to mention driving on the other side of the road, can be challenging for some tourists.

Pathway in a green forest

Consider your driving comfort level, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.  Many travelers opt for customized itineraries that include private drivers or pre-arranged tours. BTA can arrange an itinerary based on your specific needs directly with our preferred suppliers based in Ireland.

Travel by air is also possible.  Itineraries flying in and out of different cities, including Dublin, Cork, and Shannon, and returning to the United States are viable options.

Ireland’s History

A land of contradictions and invasions, Ireland has experienced rises and falls over centuries. Celtics led the earliest raids from Europe around 300 BC.  The continuation of invasions further marked territories and shaped the people.

The rise of Christianity greatly influenced by St. Patrick began 600 years later, and in 700 AD, Viking and North invaders began to settle on the island. But, as with most of Europe, peace was fleeting and unpredictable. England’s long involvement with Ireland began following an intervention between two Irish kings in dispute.  At the top of Ireland’s worst sufferings was the Great Famine of the 1840s and 1850s.  The horrifying potato famine killed a million people and forced another million to emigrate from the country.  Many believed that the English should have done more to aid the starving people.  This common belief propelled the resistance against English rule.  A long and bloody struggle for independence was fought until 1922, when a free state was born.  The free state was named Ireland in 1937 and officially declared a republic in 1948.  Ireland consists of twenty-six counties, and separately there are six other counties, known as Northern Ireland, which remain part of the United Kingdom.

During the 70s and 80s, Ireland’s economy was amid decline, and emigration was again on the high.  However, the 90s was a time of unprecedented economic growth until the global crisis of 2008.  Today, Ireland’s economy is on the rise. Immigration is in flux, and tourism is booming, giving BTA every reason to make Ireland one of our destinations for Summer 2019.

Hawaii might have a small landmass compared to the mainland United States, but it is full of incredible things to do, and amazing places to stay. If you identify yourself as an adventurer, you will find even more to do across the islands of Hawaii. Finding the best adventures in Hawaii is key when planning a trip to the islands.

Whether it be on the rim of a volcano, diving into the deep blue of the island’s tropical waters, or delving into the tropical rainforest, there is an adventure waiting around every corner. Here are some of our favorite recommendations for the best adventures in Hawaii.

Our Top 13 Best Adventurous in Hawaii :

Hike Volcanoes

1. Hike Among Volcanoes

Hawaii features close access to some of the world’s most incredible landforms, volcanoes. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park sits on the Big Island. It includes an active volcano along with miles of lava tubes stretching throughout the Park. There are even ancient petroglyphs in certain parts of the park.

The biggest draw to this park is that it is one of the few places in the world where you can actively witness the creation of land. The active volcanos on this island are currently not considered dangerous, but keep an eye out if that changes.

Another great option for hiking a volcano is available in Maui. Here the infamous dormant volcano, Haleakala, which formed over 1 million years ago has been a sacred location for Polynesian people for centuries. Get an early start and ascend to an elevation of 9,740 feet to witness the sunrise. For those of you who aren’t early risers, the sunset hiking tour of Haleakala is equally impressive.

2. Take a Helicopter Tour

The fascinating and unique geology of these islands makes them fascinating to see from above. Helicopter tours will take you above almost any of the islands and oceans that make up Hawaii.

Maui is arguably one of the best to see from above since it features lush rainforests with hidden gems like waterfalls and hidden pools. In addition, the helicopters usually have six or fewer seats if you want to go with your family or loved ones. It is important to plan any Maui trip during the right seasons, when planning a trip to Maui, we have several tips.

Scuba Diving

3. Dive with Manta Rays

Manta rays make the area around Hawaii their home for most of the year because of the hordes of plankton present around the Big Island. They specifically frequent a bay north of Kailua-Kona. They come to each night, and snorkelers and licensed divers come nightly to watch them feed, many say this is their favorite of the best adventures in Hawaii.

The local companies have set up spotlights on the ocean floor to attract even more plankton. These spotlights also help make the manta rays even more apparent in the water.

Waterfalls

4. Kayak to Secret Waterfall

Kayaking is a beautiful sport to do almost anywhere in the world with lakes or rivers. However, it is even more majestic in a location like Hawaii. Many adventurers recommend heading to Kauai, the garden island, to kayak into some hidden waterfalls.

Many take the route up the Wailua River to take in mountain scenery towards Wailua Canyon. Waterfalls can bring a sense of wellness to travelers, which can be very important during any major vacation.

5. Snorkel with Sea Turtles

Snorkeling is one of the most common of the best adventures in Hawaii, and you can do on almost any island. You don’t have to have any training to do this, unlike scuba diving. Maui is a popular snorkeling destination but you can even snorkel among the sea turtles in an area of Kauai called the Tunnels.

Lava tubes created tunnels and caves under the water. They are home to more than just sea turtles as well, giving you the experience of interacting with all kinds of sea life.

Kalalau Trail

6. Hike the Kalalau Trail

The Kalalau Trail is one of the top 10 things to do in all of Hawaii. On the island of Kauai, the trail is arguably one of the most breathtaking trails in the world. The hike gives you stunning views of the island’s coastline and looks down into volcanically formed valleys. Although it is classed as a strenuous hike, it is well worth getting to an otherwise hard-to-reach part of the island.

7. Snorkel in Molokini Crater

One of the other top snorkeling places that we had to call attention to in Hawaii is the Molokini Crater. It is a partially submerged crater of a volcano. The above-water portion forms a stunning crescent that plays into ancient Hawaiian mythology. Nowadays, though, the crater has become one of the world’s top snorkeling and diving destinations.

8. Get Your Kicks Racing in the Honolulu Marathon

If you like to wrack up races worldwide, the Honolulu Marathon is one to add to your list. It is one of the top activities on Oahu and will be a star in your running career. It also gives you a great way to explore the island since you run 26.2 miles around it. The race happens every year on the second Sunday in December.

9. Visit the Cat Sanctuary

Visiting cats might not seem like the most adventurous thing you could do on an adventure holiday. However, visiting the cat sanctuary on Lanai gives you the chance to get to one of the tiny islands of Hawaii. In addition, you will find it easier to breathe on the smaller islands since many aren’t as visited as the primary islands.

The feral cats have been relocated to the sanctuary to help the population of the island’s birds, whom the cats like to hunt.

skydive

10. Skydive Over the North Shore

Do you want a more active way to see the island from above, and go on the best adventure in Hawaii? Go skydiving over the North Shore of Oahu. You get to do a tandem dive with your instructor, who will be happy to take you out of the plane with a backflip if you want an extra ounce of adventure.

11. Cycle on the Big Island

Get your active on with a cycle trip down one of the volcanoes of the mainland. You can choose from several memorable downhill rides or combine trips to go uphill as well as down. Go down Kilauea Volcano to get a view of Volcanoes National Park with the wind in your hair.

horseback Riding

12. Go horseback Riding in Tropical Rainforests

There are certain parts of Hawaii’s islands that are still essentially inaccessible by road. Take a horseback ride through the rainforest to get to some of the most beautiful and well-maintained natural parts of the islands.

For a unique and eco-conscious experience, take a horseback riding journey in Oahu. Not only will you get the opportunity to discover the historic Gunstock Ranch on a guided horseback tour, but you can also leave your mark by planting your very own Legacy Tree.

13. Have a Shark Encounter

If you love feeling adrenaline, you will likely get quite the satisfying experience from a shark encounter. You can have a shark experience in their habitat about three miles into the sea north of O’ahu’s North Shore. It is an experience you won’t soon forget, and one of the best adventures in Hawaii.

Did you know that while Hawaii is an adventure-lovers paradise it is also incredibly romantic and one of the best places for a destination wedding in world?

Known as the “Valley Isle,” Maui is a beautiful island on the Hawaiian Archipelago. The island of Maui is full of lush green trees, volcanic mountains, and scenic beaches. Entering this island paradise, visitors find pristine, clear azure water kissing the white and golden pearls of sand. Hidden paths and secret trails lead to enchanting groves of Banyan, coconut, and Sandalwood trees. Beyond these, impressive volcanic mountains stand erect, their stoned faces overlooking the island and ocean. How to plan the perfect trip can be challenging, finding ideal accommodations, and figuring out what to do in Maui, Hawaii, with so many options.

Despite its ongoing popularity, Maui remains as breath-taking as ever. However, planning a great itinerary to Maui requires a bit of forthright and planning. For example, should you stay in hotels or explore Maui vacation rentals, do you purchase activities a la carte, or book all-inclusive Maui vacation packages? The options are endless, but which itinerary is suitable for you? Read along to find out all you need to know to plan a perfect trip to Maui, Hawaii: when to go, how to get there, what to do, and where to stay.

Maui Hawaii

Where Is Maui Hawaii Located?

This Hawaiian island is ideally positioned in the middle of the northern portion of the Central Pacific Ocean. Maui is the second-largest island in the state.

When to Go?

Although Hawaii has a very temperate climate, Maui gets relatively hot during peak summer months. Suppose you’re not built for the blazing sun or would like to visit when there’s minimum humidity but constant pleasant weather. In that case, we recommend travel during April, May, September, October, and November. However, prices surge crowds intensify as families enjoy school holidays from December through March.

Getting There: Visa, Travel Requirements and Transportation

Visa

➔ U.S citizens, general requirements for U.S entry are followed.

➔ For the U.K, Schengen countries, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, entry without a visa is allowed as long as the stay is within 90 days. Longer than that, a visa will be required.

Travel Restrictions/Requirements

➔ Visitors both with and without a visa must either be fully vaccinated (in this case, they can bypass the necessary quarantine and pre-travel test) or, if they’re unvaccinated, must present a negative Covid-19 test taken at least 72 hours before arrival from an authentic partner.

Transportation

Maui has three airports. The main airport is Kahului Airport. Additionally, airports Kapalua Airport and Hana Airport are in West and East Maui. These airports serve smaller aircraft and inter-island flights.

Furthermore, if you’re traveling from the mainland or internationally, we recommend taking a flight to the Kahului Airport or the Honolulu International Airport on Oahu. If you go for the latter, then another short flight from Oahu to Maui is required. Alternatively, if you’re feeling a bit unsure about flying twice, you could catch a ferry from the nearby islands.

Dolphins, impressive humpbacks, pilot whales, manta rays, turtles, and fish are just some of the friends you’ll encounter, but the adventure doesn’t end there. A diverse array of scuba diving awaits you on Maui:

➔  Molokini’s Back Wall Dive

One of the most popular scuba diving sites, the Molokini Back Wall is a stretch of overwater land, home to frogfish, sharks, blue dragon nudibranchs, and various sea animals. Nevertheless, this beach is a calm and shallow place, the right fit for beginners and snorkelers who want to stay close to shore. Also, visit the nearby Lahaina Jodo Mission Buddhist temple for a unique cultural experience.

Best Beaches in Maui

Apart from these lovely activities, if you’re looking to get a tan and simply relax, try visiting a few of the best beaches in Maui mentioned above. You can lay in the sand or sunbeds with the sun shining over you or choose to sleep under the umbrellas. Spend your day making sandcastles and sand-angels, searching for seashells, or playing with the calm waters.

Best Luau in Maui

One of the most popular and quintessentially hawaiian activities is the Luau. With so many different options on the island, many travelers struggle to find out what is the very best luau in Maui. While there are many different expert opinions a few of our favorite luaus include:

  1. ʻAhaʻaina Luau at the Grand Wailea (formerly Honua’ula): This Luaua offers one of the most authentic luaus on the island. Thailand: Affordable Luxury https://travelbta.com/luxury-travel-thailand/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 15:16:09 +0000 https://travelbta.com/?p=15431 Luxury meets value in Thailand. Think rooftop pools in Bangkok, culture-rich Chiang Mai, barefoot-chic islands, ethical elephant encounters, and standout hotels—all tailor-planned by Boutique Travel Advisors.

For those who know me, you know I love travel—and not just anywhere. I want to see the world in style. That means five-star hotels, turndown chocolates, spas that erase jet lag I didn’t even know I had, and experiences that stick with you. Call it “Mama’s Way of Travel.”

My husband thinks luxury is camping in the back of his 4Runner in Colorado. (I’d honestly rather stick a needle in my eye.) I grew up loving the outdoors, but let’s be honest: I’ve always had my eye on city lights, culture, and comfort. Which brings me to Thailand—the Land of Smiles, where luxury doesn’t cost a fortune.

Why Thailand?

Safe, welcoming, easy to navigate, and surprisingly affordable, Thailand is an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Asia. You get world-class hotels and experiences for significantly less than what they’d cost in Europe.

Why Thailand

Bangkok: Sparkling temples, tuk-tuks, rooftop infinity pools, and some of the world’s best hotels, with service that is extremely high-touch.

Chiang Mai: Slower pace, rich culture, night markets, Michelin meals, and yes, $9 foot massages.

Southern Thailand: Beaches, islands, and luxury straight out of a movie set (literally—Jurassic World  IV was filmed here).

Highlights of My Journey – Elephants in Pattaya

ELEPHANTS IN PATTAYA

Thailand once had 10,000 elephants; today, conservation is vital. At an ethical sanctuary, I got to brush an elephant who politely listened when I asked her to sit. Experiences like this—seeing animals cared for ethically with a mutual respect between human and animal—are unforgettable.

Chiang Mai Nights & Culture

137 Pillars Hotel: Luxurious, intimate, and steeped in history. Fun fact: Louis, son of the widow, Anna Leonowens, whose life was the basis of the story of The King and I, lived at this location as an English trader when it was Siam. True five-star indulgence.

Anantara Chiang Mai

Photo Courtesy of Anantara Chiang Mai

Anantara Chiang Mai: Nestled on the river, this hotel is elegant and serene. We had the option to dress in traditional garb to embrace the whole of the location and dine as former royalty of Thailand. Reach out to Boutique Travel Advisors to book a traditional night on their Golden Boat, where you’ll enjoy food inspired by centuries-old royal recipes created by a Michelin-starred chef. Talk about a picture-perfect experience.

Grandma's Cooking School

Photo Courtesy of Grandma’s Cooking School

Cooking Class: Don’t miss Grandma’s Cooking School for a private class. Make sure to ask for a classroom with air conditioning—you’ll thank me. I made pad thai, and oh my goodness…it was phenomenal.

Chiang Mai Night Markets: Silks, jewelry, spices, pottery, and yummy street food. Bonus: take a Vespa ride through the old city at night—wind in your hair, lights twinkling. Magic.
Bangkok Hotels

Four Seasons Bangkok

Photo Courtesy of Four Seasons Bangkok

Four Seasons Bangkok: Serene riverside luxury with a spa not to miss and one of the best bars in the world—BKK Social.

Capella Bangkok: Floor-to-ceiling river views. Fun fact: voted the best hotel in the world in 2024. Just saying.

The Siam Hotel

Photo Courtesy of The Siam Hotel

The Siam: Step into an antique collector’s fantasy—arrive by boat and you’re instantly transported to another era.

Southern Thailand: Barefoot Luxury

Ritz Carlton Reserve, Krabi

Photo Courtesy of Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Krabi

Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Krabi: Beds so big they could swallow you whole. Lead-in rooms are perfect for couples or honeymooners. Prepare to be shocked by the price (in a good way).

Banyan Tree Krabi: Family-friendly luxury with complimentary boat trips to the island where Jurassic World 4 was filmed.

Six Senses Koh Yao Noi

Photo Courtesy of Six Senses Koh Yao Noi

Six Senses Koh Yao Noi: Eco-luxury, private villas, treehouse-style suites, organic gardens, and panoramic Andaman Sea views.

Anantara Ko Samui: Family paradise. Bunk beds shaped like castles, bathrobes and slippers for kids, toys delivered to the room—pure magic for the little ones while keeping luxury for the adults.

Food Worth Traveling For

THAI FOOD

Forget takeout pad thai. Thai cuisine is layered, bold, and deeply tied to culture. Highlights: Michelin-starred meals in Chiang Mai, large river shrimp with roe, street food that rivals fine dining, and of course mangosteen, papaya, and passion fruit galore.

Final Word

Thailand is where adventure meets luxury without the European price tag. Rooftop cocktails, barefoot beaches, elephants, temples, river cruises, Michelin meals, and some of the world’s most stunning hotels—it’s all here, and surprisingly affordable. Reach out to Boutique Travel Advisors for a 3-week honeymoon itinerary that costs around $15,000! Amazing!

Whether it’s your first taste of Asia, a family trip, or a honeymoon escape, Thailand is waiting—with a smile.

From Ballparks to Fairways of Discovery

For many American families, baseball has long been a shared experience—whether it’s watching your favorite team at a big-league stadium, spending weekends at the ballpark cheering on your child, or collecting ticket stubs from memorable games. Those traditions remain a meaningful part of family life and travel. But as we get older, the way we participate in sports often changes. Instead of playing catch or rounding bases, many of us turn to golf—a game that can be enjoyed for a lifetime and easily woven into our travels. The quest expands from stadiums to fairways, with golfers setting their sights on iconic courses across the country, each carrying its own legends, landscapes, and lore.

Golf vacations, however, are about more than just the game. The true appeal lies in the experiences that surround it—traveling with friends or couples, even when not everyone plays, bringing your clubs on a family trip while kids are busy with their own adventures, or pairing a round with fine dining, wellness, and cultural exploration. A day on a championship course becomes part of a broader journey that blends luxury hotels, spa retreats, outdoor adventure, and memorable moments both on and off the fairway.

If you’re inspired to plan your own golf getaway, many of the hotels featured here can be booked directly through our Luxury Travel Club, with our team working behind the scenes to ensure your stay feels VIP from start to finish. Or, if you prefer, you can work with a trusted travel advisor who will curate an exceptional itinerary tailored to your style of travel.

1. Pebble Beach & Monterey Peninsula, California

The Golf: Pebble Beach Golf Links is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier golf destinations, consistently ranked among the Top 25 Golf Courses in the World by Travel + Leisure. Its cliffside holes overlooking the Pacific are iconic—from the postcard-perfect par-3 seventh to the dramatic par-5 eighteenth along Stillwater Cove, where champions have been crowned and history has been written. Add in Spyglass Hill and The Links at Spanish Bay, and the Monterey Peninsula becomes one of the most complete golf experiences in America.

Beyond the Greens: The area offers just as much away from the course. Carmel-by-the-Sea enchants visitors with cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and art galleries. The famous 17-Mile Drive winds along dramatic coastal bluffs, while Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Big Sur showcase some of California’s most breathtaking scenery. Families can explore the Monterey Bay Aquarium, consistently rated among the best in the world, or spend the day cycling, kayaking, and exploring the coast.

Wine Country: Just inland, Carmel Valley has become one of California’s top wine regions, particularly known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Wineries such as Bernardus Winery, Folktale Winery, and Talbott Vineyards are celebrated for their award-winning vintages, offering tastings set against rolling hills and golden light. An afternoon in the vineyards is the perfect complement to a morning on the fairways.

Where to Stay:

  • The Lodge at Pebble Beach – A Forbes Five-Star resort perched on the 18th fairway, with ocean-view rooms, fine dining at Stillwater Bar & Grill, and treatments at the Forbes Five-Star Spa at Pebble Beach.

  • Casa Palmero – An intimate Mediterranean-style retreat with 24 rooms, private courtyards, and butler service. Guests enjoy seclusion while remaining steps away from the resort’s world-class amenities.
  • InterContinental The Clement Monterey – A contemporary oceanfront hotel on Cannery Row, featuring spa services, chic accommodations, and sweeping views of Monterey Bay.
  • Post Ranch Inn – If you are willing to venture a little further or extend your era following golf, this unique property nestled in Big Sur offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline and Pacific Ocean. Post Ranch Inn embodies luxury with its sustainable design, infinity pools, and luxurious spa. While not directly in the Pebble Beach area, it provides an unforgettable retreat just an hour’s drive away, allowing you to enjoy both the tranquility of Big Sur and easy access to the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links.

2. Scottsdale, Arizona

The Golf: Scottsdale is not just a golf destination—it’s home for us at Boutique Travel Advisors, and we take great pride in living in what Travel + Leisure recently named the Best Golf City in the United States. With more than 200 courses framed by desert mountains and saguaro cacti, Scottsdale offers year-round play and some of the country’s most striking desert golf.

Troon North, with its Monument and Pinnacle courses, is often considered the benchmark for desert golf, where fairways wind through towering granite boulders and pristine Sonoran landscapes. TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course, famous for its rowdy 16th hole, hosts the WM Phoenix Open—an event dubbed “the Greatest Show on Grass.” More than just a PGA Tour stop, the tournament is a community celebration organized by The Thunderbirds, who also support youth development programs like the First Tee. For golfers planning a trip in February, it’s an experience unlike any other.

Beyond the renowned public courses, Scottsdale is also home to some of the country’s most exclusive private clubs, such as Whisper Rock, Desert Mountain, and Silverleaf. Access often depends on personal connections, which makes it worth reaching out to colleagues, clients, or even fraternity brothers who might be members. An invitation to play at one of these private clubs is a rare and memorable experience that adds a special layer to any Scottsdale golf trip.

We-Ko-Pa and Grayhawk round out the public golf offerings, delivering even more variety and making Scottsdale an unmatched choice for trips with other golf friends, couples’ getaways, or family vacations where golf takes center stage.

Beyond the Greens: Scottsdale is just as captivating off the course as it is on it. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike Camelback Mountain, Pinnacle Peak, or McDowell Sonoran Preserve, while architecture lovers can explore Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Scottsdale is also a wellness capital, with award-winning spas like those at The Phoenician and Sanctuary Camelback Mountain. Dining has blossomed into one of the best culinary scenes in the Southwest, with James Beard Award-winning chefs, vibrant cocktail bars, and a mix of desert-inspired and global cuisine. The arts scene thrives as well, from galleries in Old Town to seasonal events like the Scottsdale Arts Festival.

Scottsdale is also the hub of Major League Baseball’s Cactus League Spring Training, where fans can watch teams such as the San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies. For sports lovers, it’s a rare opportunity to pair a round of desert golf with an afternoon at the ballpark.

Where to Stay in Scottsdale:

  • The Phoenician – A Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond resort, featuring its own 27-hole golf course, a Forbes Five-Star spa, multiple dining venues including J&G Steakhouse, and a spectacular multi-tier pool complex with Camelback Mountain views. It remains one of Scottsdale’s most iconic properties.

  • Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North – Nestled in the high desert, this resort offers adobe-style casitas with fireplaces and sweeping views. Guests enjoy private shuttle service to Troon North’s courses, a Forbes Five-Star spa, and elevated dining with desert panoramas.

  • Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows – Spread across 23 acres, this design-forward property combines mid-century modern style with desert minimalism. Bungalow-style accommodations, three pools, curated art collaborations, and inventive dining make it ideal for travelers seeking something contemporary and creative.

Extensions to Sedona & Tucson: For travelers with more time, Scottsdale can be the gateway to two of Arizona’s most distinctive destinations. Sedona, two hours north, is famed for its red rock formations and spiritual energy. Stay at Enchantment Resort, tucked into Boynton Canyon with direct access to hiking trails and the acclaimed Mii amo Spa, or Ambiente, A Landscape Hotel, an adults-only retreat where sleek glass-walled atriums immerse guests in the desert’s dramatic scenery. To the south, Tucson is synonymous with world-class wellness. Miraval Arizona and Canyon Ranch are internationally recognized for transformative retreats, blending mindfulness, fitness, nutrition, and spa therapies in serene desert settings. Pairing Scottsdale’s golf with Sedona’s scenery or Tucson’s wellness creates a perfectly balanced Arizona itinerary.

3. Kiawah Island, South Carolina

The Golf: Kiawah Island is one of America’s premier golf destinations, anchored by the legendary Ocean Course, Pete Dye’s windswept masterpiece. Opened in 1991 for the Ryder Cup—nicknamed the “War by the Shore”—the Ocean Course is renowned for its seaside holes, fierce Atlantic winds, and Dye’s signature bunkering. It consistently ranks it among the toughest courses in the U.S. and one of the best public courses in the country.

Kiawah, however, offers much more than just the Ocean Course. Its four additional championship layouts—Turtle Point by Jack Nicklaus, Osprey Point by Tom Fazio, Cougar Point by Gary Player, and Oak Point by Clyde Johnston—give golfers variety, challenge, and scenic beauty across marshlands, maritime forests, and lagoons. Together, these five courses make Kiawah one of the most comprehensive golf resorts in the United States.

Beyond the Greens: Kiawah’s natural setting is just as appealing as its golf. The island is home to 10 miles of pristine beaches, more than 30 miles of biking trails, and tidal creeks perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. Dolphin sightings are common, and the island’s emphasis on conservation keeps its landscapes unspoiled. For a cultural extension, Charleston is less than an hour away. Consistently ranked the No. 1 city in the U.S. by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards (Condé Nast Traveler), Charleston enchants with cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and a dining scene that blends Southern tradition with contemporary innovation.

Where to Stay:

  • The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort – A Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond oceanfront resort that blends Southern charm with refined luxury. Guests enjoy elegant accommodations, sweeping ocean views, and one of the few Forbes Five-Star spas in South Carolina (Forbes Travel Guide). Dining includes the signature Ocean Room steakhouse, Jasmine Porch for Lowcountry cuisine, and the Loggerhead Grill by the pool.
  • The Charleston Place – An AAA Five Diamond property in Charleston’s historic district. Known for refined Southern hospitality, it features luxurious rooms, a rooftop pool with city views, and the renowned Charleston Grill, which has been praised by Travel + Leisure for its elevated Southern fare.

  • Hotel Bennett – Overlooking Marion Square, Hotel Bennett combines European-inspired design with Charleston’s historic setting. Highlights include the stylish rooftop restaurant and bar Fiat Lux, a celebrated French patisserie, and elegant interiors that have made it a favorite in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards

4. Pinehurst, North Carolina

The Golf: Pinehurst is often referred to as the Cradle of American Golf and with good reason. The resort features nine courses, but its crown jewel is Pinehurst No. 2, designed by Donald Ross in 1907. Famous for its challenging turtleback greens and strategic bunkering, No. 2 has hosted more major championships than any other course in the United States, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, and Ryder Cup. It is also slated to host multiple future U.S. Opens, solidifying its reputation as one of the most important venues in golf history.

Pinehurst also features The Cradle, a nine-hole short course deemed “the most fun 10 acres in golf.” Designed to be approachable and entertaining, it’s an ideal spot for families to enjoy the game together, for children and newer golfers to learn in a relaxed setting, and for seasoned players to practice their short game while embracing the patience needed to play alongside less experienced friends or loved ones.

Beyond the Greens: Off the fairways, the Village of Pinehurst feels like stepping back in time, with brick sidewalks, quaint shops, and manicured gardens. The Tufts Archives document the history of golf in America and Donald Ross’s enduring influence. Beyond the village, the Sandhills region offers equestrian activities, hiking, and birdwatching in natural preserves like the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, known for its rare longleaf pines. For those seeking cultural diversions, Southern Pines—just minutes away—offers galleries, dining, and craft breweries that round out a visit.

Where to Stay:

  • The Carolina Hotel – Nicknamed the “Queen of the South,” this historic property blends grandeur with Southern hospitality. Known for its sweeping verandas, refined dining at the Carolina Dining Room, and proximity to Pinehurst’s championship courses, it has been welcoming golfers for over a century.
  • The Holly Inn – Opened in 1895 as the first hotel at Pinehurst, this charming property offers a more intimate stay with Victorian-style architecture, gardens, and close access to the Village. Its historic atmosphere makes it a favorite for returning guests.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte – For those who want to pair golf with a vibrant city experience, this LEED Gold-certified luxury hotel offers rooftop gardens, craft cocktails, and Forbes Four-Star dining. It provides a modern contrast to the historic charm of Pinehurst, perfect for a pre- or post-golf city break.

5. Sea Island, Georgia

The Golf: Sea Island is home to three championship courses—Seaside, Plantation, and Retreat—that make it one of the premier golf resorts in the Southeast. The Seaside Course, a Tom Fazio redesign, is the jewel of the island and a regular stop on the RSM Classic, a PGA Tour event that attracts many of the world’s best players (PGATour.com). Beyond the courses, Sea Island’s Golf Performance Center has earned international acclaim as one of the top training facilities in the world, used by professionals and amateurs alike to refine every aspect of their game.

Beyond the Greens: The Golden Isles offer a diverse range of outdoor and cultural experiences. Guests can enjoy deep-sea fishing charters, sailing excursions, and guided kayaking through tidal marshes. On land, horseback riding along secluded beaches or exploring miles of biking trails are popular ways to discover the island’s natural beauty. St. Simons Island, just across the causeway, provides historic charm with landmarks like the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and lively shopping districts (Explore Georgia). For a cultural extension, Savannah—about 90 minutes away—is known for its cobblestone squares, antebellum architecture, and one of the South’s most celebrated dining scenes. From fresh oysters at The Grey Market to refined Southern cuisine at Elizabeth on 37th, the city has an impressive restaurant scene.

Where to Stay:

  • The Cloister – A Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond resort with Mediterranean-style architecture, private beach access, and a Forbes Five-Star spa. Its elegant design, riverside dining, and family-friendly activities make it the flagship property of Sea Island.
  • The Lodge – Styled as a Scottish manor, this intimate retreat overlooks the Atlantic and the Seaside Course. Known for its butler service, wood-paneled lounges, and nightly bagpiper serenade, it offers an atmosphere of exclusivity and tradition.
  • JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside – Located in Savannah’s historic district, this reimagined power plant blends eclectic art and industrial-chic design. Rooftop dining at Electric Moon, live music, and riverside views make it a lively complement to Sea Island’s resort experience.

6. Maui, Hawaii

The Golf: Maui combines the beauty of a tropical paradise with the prestige of world-class golf. The island’s crown jewel is the Plantation Course at Kapalua, home of the PGA Tour’s Tournament of Champions. This course is revered for its sweeping ocean views, dramatic elevation changes, and fairways that tumble down toward the Pacific. For many professionals, it is the most breathtaking start to the season, and for visitors, it’s a chance to play where champions have teed it up. On the sunny south shore, Wailea Golf Club offers three distinctive championship courses—Gold, Emerald, and Blue—each blending lush landscapes with panoramic ocean vistas. Together, they create a variety of experiences that make Maui a year-round golfer’s paradise.

Beyond the Greens: While golf is a highlight, Maui is equally celebrated as one of the world’s top vacation destinations, and any trip here should balance time on the course with time to unwind. Relax poolside under swaying palms, snorkel the crystalline waters of Molokini Crater, or embark on a whale-watching tour between December and April when humpbacks migrate through the warm channels. Adventurers can rise early for sunrise above the clouds at Haleakalā National Park, or hike the island’s bamboo forests and hidden waterfalls. Evenings bring the chance to experience a traditional Hawaiian luau, blending music, hula, and culinary tradition. For dining, Wailea and Lahaina are hubs of farm-to-table cuisine, with local chefs celebrating Maui’s agricultural bounty alongside fresh seafood caught daily.

Where to Stay:

  • The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua – A Forbes Five-Star resort offering cultural immersion programs that honor Hawaiian traditions, multiple pools with ocean views, and direct access to Kapalua Golf’s championship courses. Guests can enjoy guided hikes, oceanfront dining, and a celebrated spa that reflects the healing traditions of the islands.

  • Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort – Contemporary and stylish, the Andaz brings a sleek aesthetic to its beachfront location. Infinity pools, sunrise yoga sessions, and innovative dining experiences like Ka’ana Kitchen make it a favorite for modern luxury travelers.

7. Southern California (San Diego & Palm Springs)

The Golf: Southern California blends championship pedigree with unforgettable scenery. In San Diego, Torrey Pines Golf Course stands as a public golf legend, with two layouts perched on bluffs above the Pacific Ocean. Host of multiple U.S. Opens, including Tiger Woods’ storied 2008 victory, Torrey Pines remains a must-play for golfers seeking history and breathtaking views. Further inland, Palm Springs provides an entirely different golfing experience with its desert landscapes and mountain backdrops. Courses such as PGA West’s Stadium Course, Indian Wells Golf Resort, and more than 100 additional desert layouts make this region a year-round haven for golfers.

Beyond the Greens: For us, Southern California feels like a second home—co-founder Janet Semenova and several of our advisors live here and bring insider knowledge of the region to every itinerary. San Diego itself offers a wealth of attractions: the world-renowned San Diego Zoo, the cultural treasures of Balboa Park, and the beaches of La Jolla, where sea lions sunbathe on the rocks and kayakers explore sea caves. Palm Springs, by contrast, is beloved for its mid-century modern architecture tours, hot mineral springs, luxury spa resorts, and easy access to Joshua Tree National Park.

For those with more time, Southern California invites travelers to journey further up the coast. Orange County offers charming seaside communities, with Laguna Beach standing out as a top recommendation—especially in summer. Known for its art festivals, boutique shopping, coves, and dramatic coastal trails, Laguna is an ideal retreat for our Arizona clients seeking cooler temperatures and ocean breezes. Combining San Diego, Palm Springs, and Laguna Beach creates a well-rounded Southern California escape that blends golf, culture, and coastal relaxation.

Where to Stay:

  • Fairmont Grand Del Mar – A Forbes Five-Star resort recognized for excellence in both accommodations and dining, featuring its own Tom Fazio-designed golf course and one of Southern California’s most celebrated spas.

8. Austin, Texas

The Golf: Austin has quietly become one of Texas’s premier golf destinations. Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa anchors the city’s golf scene with four championship courses: Fazio Canyons, Fazio Foothills, Coore Crenshaw Cliffside, and Palmer Lakeside. Each layout offers a different experience of Texas Hill Country, from dramatic canyons and elevated tees to rolling greens tucked against limestone cliffs. For those looking to venture beyond Austin, the Omni PGA Frisco—just three hours north—has cemented Texas as one of America’s leading golf states, with two championship courses, a short course, and a putting “green” that is larger than many entire golf facilities.

Beyond the Greens: Austin is a city where culture, creativity, and energy collide. Known as the “Live Music Capital of the World”, it’s home to hundreds of venues ranging from legendary spots like the Continental Club to buzzing downtown rooftops. The city also hosts world-renowned festivals including South by Southwest (SXSW), which draws innovators, artists, and performers from around the globe, and Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival, set in Zilker Park each fall.

The University of Texas at Austin adds a collegiate vibrancy to the city, bringing with it major sporting events, cultural institutions like the Blanton Museum of Art, and a youthful spirit that fuels the city’s nightlife.

Food is another cornerstone of Austin’s appeal. It is often hailed as one of America’s top culinary cities, famous for barbecue institutions like Franklin Barbecue and La Barbecue, Tex-Mex classics, and a thriving farm-to-table scene that rivals larger metropolitan areas. Food trucks are also a local tradition, serving everything from gourmet tacos to inventive global street food.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore as well: paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake, swimming at Barton Springs Pool, or hiking the trails of Hill Country. Austin balances big-city energy with natural escapes, making it an all-around destination where golfers and non-golfers alike will feel at home.

9. Big Sky, Montana

The Golf: While Big Sky is most famous as a world-class ski destination, summer reveals a different side of the mountains—one that’s perfect for golfers. The crown jewel is Moonlight Basin’s Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, a dramatic alpine layout set at 7,500 feet above sea level. With sweeping fairways, towering pines, and panoramic views of Lone Mountain, it’s one of the most striking mountain golf courses in the country. The high elevation makes every drive feel even more powerful, and the natural terrain offers both challenge and beauty. The golf season here runs from late June through early September, when the alpine meadows are in bloom and the days are long.

Beyond the Greens: Big Sky embodies rustic outdoor luxury. In winter, it transforms into one of America’s premier ski destinations, with more than 5,800 acres of skiable terrain across four connected mountains. In summer, it becomes a playground for adventurers and families alike—fly fishing on the Gallatin River, horseback riding through wildflower fields, hiking alpine trails, and whitewater rafting are all part of the experience. Nearby Yellowstone National Park adds another layer of wonder, with geothermal landmarks like Old Faithful and abundant wildlife. Whether you’re carving powder runs in January or teeing it up in July, Big Sky offers an extraordinary year-round escape.

Where to Stay:

  • One&Only Moonlight Basin – Opening in 2025, this will be One&Only’s first U.S. property, combining contemporary alpine architecture with the brand’s signature ultra-luxury service. Guests will enjoy exclusive access to Moonlight Basin Golf Club, along with curated dining, wellness programming, and residences designed for extended stays.

  • Montage Big Sky – Opened in 2021, Montage Big Sky has quickly set the standard for luxury in Montana. The Forbes Five-Star resort offers ski-in/ski-out access in winter and direct access to hiking and biking trails in summer. With its expansive Spa Montage, multiple dining venues celebrating Montana’s culinary traditions, and a design that blends mountain chic with rustic elegance, it captures the essence of outdoor luxury year-round.

10. Los Cabos, Mexico for its U.S. Proximity

The Golf: Los Cabos is a premier golf destination that captivates golfers with its stunning desert landscapes and oceanfront views. The region is home to iconic courses like the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, designed by Jack Nicklaus, which offers breathtaking vistas of the Sea of Cortez from nearly every hole. Another standout is the historic Pebble Beach Golf Club counterpart, Quivira Golf Club, with its dramatic cliffs and breathtaking ocean holes. For those seeking a championship challenge, the Cabo del Sol’s Desert Course presents a thrilling layout framed by breathtaking vistas of the Baja Peninsula’s rugged mountains and serene desert. Los Cabos is a golfer’s paradise, blending top-tier facilities with an unforgettable natural backdrop.

Beyond the Greens: Los Cabos is also famous for its vibrant culture and stunning landscapes. Visitors can soak up the sun on beautiful beaches like Medano Beach or explore local markets for authentic Mexican crafts. Take a boat tour to see the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas and enjoy some of the best snorkeling spots in the region. Adventurers may also appreciate rugged ATV tours through desert terrain or deep-sea fishing excursions. As the sun sets, the lively nightlife comes alive with beachside bars and gourmet dining options celebrating local cuisine. Seafood lovers will delight in fresh catches, prepared with traditional Mexican flavors, while upscale restaurants and local taquerias offer an array of culinary experiences.

Where to Stay:

  • Auberge Resorts Collection at Esperanza – This luxurious resort offers stunning accommodations overlooking the Pacific Ocean, exceptional dining experiences, and a renowned spa. With a dedicated golf concierge, guests can easily arrange tee times and enjoy exclusive access to local courses, enhancing their golfing getaway.
  • Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Los Cabos – A stunning beachfront property combining sophisticated luxury with a serene coastal environment. Guests can relax by the infinity pools, indulge in the world-class spa, and enjoy upscale dining options while having personalized golf experiences arranged to suit their preferences.
  • Viceroy Los Cabos – This chic, contemporary resort features striking architecture and luxurious accommodations, providing an upscale atmosphere for relaxation and recreation. Guests have direct access to Los Cabos’ best courses, complemented by on-site amenities, including gourmet dining and a lavish spa.
  • Grand Velas Los Cabos – This all-inclusive luxury resort offers a seamless blend of relaxation and adventure. Guests can enjoy numerous gourmet dining options, lavish accommodations with ocean views, and complimentary access to world-class golf. It’s perfect for those who desire a complete resort experience with the convenience of all-inclusive amenities.

Although Los Cabos is not in the U.S., its proximity to the Southwest and the abundance of direct flights from major cities make it a favored getaway for American travelers seeking a luxurious golf escape.

When travelers think of cruising, they often picture sprawling mega-ships with casinos and theaters. But expedition cruising is something altogether different—it’s about discovery, connection, and immersion. Recently, I had the privilege of joining HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) on their MS Roald Amundsen, journeying from Vancouver through Alaska’s wild coastlines and onward to Nome. It was an unforgettable reminder of how travel can enrich not just your itinerary, but your soul.

Why HX?

WHY HX

HX Cruises has quickly become a leader in expedition travel. Their rebrand in 2023 emphasized their commitment to sustainability and innovation, and their ships reflect that—hybrid-powered engines, Scandinavian-inspired design, onboard science centers, and a warm, casual atmosphere. Unlike traditional cruising, every moment feels curated to foster a deeper connection with the places you’re exploring.

Highlights of the Experience

What truly set this voyage apart were the thoughtful details and the people who made the journey unforgettable:

Exceptional Expedition Team

An Exceptional Expedition Team: The expertise onboard was remarkable. From geologists and naturalists to biologists, birding specialists, and professional photographers, the diversity of knowledge added depth to every excursion and lecture. Their passion was contagious, turning each landing into a learning adventure.

Freedom to Personalize
Freedom to Personalize: I loved the flexibility to shape my days around what fascinated me most. I leaned toward wildlife and glacier excursions, while others chose hiking or cultural encounters. This ability to curate your own experience makes HX a perfect match for travelers with different passions and energy levels.

Relaxation Meets Adventure
Relaxation Meets Adventure: After days filled with exploration, the ship became a haven. Whether it was unwinding in the sauna or hot tub, taking a swim, enjoying a workout in the gym, indulging at the spa, or sipping a cocktail in the Explorer Lounge, there was always the perfect way to recharge.

capturing the memories
Capturing the Memories: Having professional photographers onboard was a gift. Their skill ensured that I could fully immerse myself in the moment without worrying about missing the perfect shot—a luxury that made the experience even richer.

Thoughtful Memento
A Thoughtful Memento:
Every guest receives the signature HX expedition jacket, a high-quality piece of gear that’s both practical and stylish. Since returning home, it’s become a wonderful conversation starter and a reminder of the journey.

A Voyage Unlike Any Other

Our journey began in Vancouver, weaving through the Inside Passage’s forested fjords before heading north to Alaska’s majestic landscapes. Each day brought a new highlight:

misty fjords

  • Misty Fjords: Towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls shaped by glaciers.

wrangell & sitka

  • Wrangell & Sitka: Immersions in indigenous and Russian heritage.

icy bay

  • Icy Bay: its towering tidewater glaciers, drifting icebergs, and stark silence create an awe-inspiring landscape.

kodiak island

  • Kodiak Island & Katmai National Park: Watching brown bears in the wild, alongside whales and sea otters.

aleutian islands

  • Aleutian Islands: Ghost towns, seabird sanctuaries, and remote bays few travelers will ever set foot in.

St. Paul & St. Matthew Islands

  • St. Paul & St. Matthew Islands: Some of the most isolated—and breathtaking—landscapes on Earth.Nome
  • Nome: Steeped in Gold Rush history, and once the landing point for Roald Amundsen himself.

Life Onboard the MS Roald Amundsen

LIFE ON BOARD

Every corner of the ship reflected a blend of Scandinavian design and expedition-ready innovation. Floor-to-ceiling windows, cozy lounges, and the immersive Science Center made downtime just as rewarding as time ashore.

My favorite spot was the top deck, offering 360° views of fjords, glaciers, wildlife, and spectacular sunsets. For future travelers, I strongly recommend booking a balcony cabin—it’s the best way to stay connected to the landscapes around you.

The vibe onboard was informal yet engaging. Guests and staff connected naturally, with conversations flowing easily and without pretense. It was refreshing to feel part of a community where everyone shared the same spirit of discovery.

The warmth of the staff stood out, I felt a sense of familiarity as crew members greeted me by name and remembered the little details. Their thoughtfulness created a personal, welcoming atmosphere.

Who Should Consider This Journey?

If you’re new to expedition cruising, this itinerary is a fantastic introduction. It’s paced to allow plenty of exploration without feeling overwhelming. For seasoned adventurers, it offers rare access to remote islands and cultural gems that few ships ever reach.

A Paradise for Wildlife Enthusiasts

WILDLIFE

One of the most rewarding aspects of this expedition is the incredible variety of wildlife you can encounter along the way. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, this voyage is truly a dream come true. Depending on the season and conditions, travelers often spot:

  • Marine life: Humpback whales, orcas, harbor seals, sea lions, otters, and even salmon runs in action.
  • Birdlife: Bald eagles soaring overhead, tufted puffins nesting along cliffs, and other rare seabird species unique to this region.
  • Land mammals: Both brown and black bears foraging along the shoreline—sometimes even hunting salmon in the streams.

Whether you’re on the deck with binoculars or joining a guided small-boat excursion, every day offers the chance to witness nature at its most raw and spectacular.

Sustainability at the Core

HX is pioneering eco-conscious travel, banning heavy fuel oil and single-use plastics, while investing in hybrid-powered ships that reduce emissions by up to 20%. As a travel advisor committed to responsible tourism, I deeply value their leadership in sustainable cruising.

Why Book with Us?

At Boutique Travel Advisors , we help match travelers to experiences that align with their passions—whether that’s wildlife, culture, photography, or simply seeking the extraordinary. Expedition cruising with HX is about discovery and connection, and this Vancouver-to-Nome voyage is a journey that will stay with you forever.

If you’d like to learn more about HX or explore upcoming expedition itineraries, I’d be delighted to guide you through the options. This could be your year to experience one of the last frontiers.

Visiting Alaska feels like stepping into another world—a land where glaciers carve the earth, wildlife thrives in its natural habitat, and vast, untouched landscapes stretch endlessly. On my recent trip, I was able to experience a mix of charming towns, breathtaking trails, and thrilling adventures that made this journey unforgettable.

Juneau: Whales, Glaciers, and Trails

Juneau

In Juneau, the highlight for me was a whale-watching tour More Info here. Here, you are guaranteed to see whales—and I was lucky enough to spot orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, and sea otters. It was absolutely magical.

Of course, no visit to Juneau is complete without seeing the Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. While some visitors hike all the way in, I found that simply viewing the glacier and waterfall—an easy stop of about 20 minutes—was enough. You don’t need to book a tour, but you will need a car to get there.

Downtown Juneau is a gem in its own right, with charming local shops and unique souvenirs that capture the spirit of Alaska. One evening, as the sun set, I was treated to an unexpected thrill—a young black bear wandering near downtown.

For hikers, the Gold Creek Trail and Perseverance Trail offer rewarding treks into the surrounding mountains. From downtown, you can also catch the Mount Roberts Tramway for sweeping views, though personally, I found the hikes offered a more authentic experience. If you’re looking to splurge, consider booking a Tracy Arm Fjord tour directly from downtown. While it’s on the pricier side, the towering cliffs, waterfalls, and glaciers make it an unforgettable adventure.

Anchorage: Moose and Coastal Views

Anchorage

Anchorage really surprised me with how much wildlife you can encounter right in and around the city. One of the best examples of this is the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, a local favorite that feels like a slice of wilderness tucked into an urban setting. Spanning about 11 miles from downtown’s Second Avenue all the way to Kincaid Park, the trail hugs the coast of Cook Inlet, winding through marshes, spruce forests, and rolling coastal hills.

I’d highly recommend experiencing it by bike—you get the best rhythm for taking in the scenery. On one side you’ve got the ocean opening up with views across the inlet, and on the other, dense forest and shrubs where moose love to wander. In fact, this is where I saw several moose up close, a reminder that in Anchorage, nature doesn’t sit politely in the distance; it’s right there alongside you.

The ride also has plenty of interesting stops along the way:

  • Westchester Lagoon: an early highlight on the trail, is perfect for birdwatching and even ice-skating when winter sets in.
  • Earthquake Park: tells the dramatic story of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, with interpretive signs marking where the land literally slid into the inlet.
  • Point Woronzof is both a scenic overlook and a thrill—you can watch massive planes descend toward Anchorage’s airport, so close it feels like they’re skimming just overhead.

We also visited downtown Anchorage, where you’ll find a few souvenir shops and local eateries. A cultural stop worth making is the Anchorage Museum, which offers a wonderful mix of art and Alaskan history.

Seward & Kenai Fjords National Park: Glaciers and Marine Wildlife

Seward

From Anchorage, we made a day trip to Seward, a charming coastal town that serves as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. We booked a full-day cruise (about 7–8 hours), and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. More info here

The journey took us through breathtaking fjords where towering cliffs meet icy waters, and the wildlife sightings were incredible. We saw orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, puffins, and even witnessed a glacier calving—watching massive chunks of ice tumble into the ocean is an awe-inspiring sight you’ll never forget.

From a distance, we passed two glaciers before approaching a massive tidewater glacier up close. The sheer size and sound of the ice cracking and plunging into the sea was humbling, a reminder of Alaska’s raw, powerful beauty.

Denali National Park: Wilderness and Wildlife

Denali

Denali is a vast wilderness—over six million acres of untamed land where towering mountains, glacial valleys, and wild rivers set the stage for unforgettable adventures. Private vehicles are only allowed up to mile 15 of the park road, and currently the road is open only until mile 43 due to safety concerns.

To truly experience Denali, you’ll want to hop on one of the official park buses. Options include non-narrated transit buses for a simple ride into the park, or narrated tour buses where guides share insights along the way. The Natural History Tour focuses on culture and geology, while the Tundra Wilderness Tour takes you deeper into the backcountry for a better chance of wildlife encounters.

The landscapes were breathtaking at every turn, but the Horseshoe Lake Trail was a personal favorite—is not an easy hike but the views are worth it. If you’re into camping, traveling by RV is another rewarding way to immerse yourself in the park’s wild character.

Just 15 minutes from the entrance, you’ll also find a cluster of charming shops offering unique Denali souvenirs, a perfect stop after a day of exploring.

Wrangell–St. Elias National Park: Glacier, Ice Caves and Adventure

Wrangell

The drive to Wrangell–St. Elias National Park is long—about two hours on gravel roads—but every mile is worth it. This vast park rises from the ocean all the way up to 18,008 feet and spans a staggering 13.2 million acres—the same size as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Switzerland combined. Wrangell–St. Elias is filled with opportunities for adventure, and for me, it was the highlight of my Alaska journey.

The drive is long—about two hours on gravel roads—but every mile is worth it. We based ourselves in the historic town of Kennicott and joined St Elias Alpine Guides, where I experienced three unforgettable adventures:

  • Ice Cave Exploration: My absolute favorite. The adventure begins with a rugged hike across rocky moraine before descending into hidden ice caves that appear from the outside like ordinary dirt-covered hills. Step inside, however, and you’re surrounded by glittering blue chambers of ice. At one point, we entered through one side of a cave and exited through the other—an otherworldly experience I’ll never forget. Because this is a private tour, the guides adjust the pace and level of challenge to your group’s comfort. Learn more here.
  • Half-Day Glacier Hike: After a short hike through the valley, we strapped on crampons and set foot on the Root Glacier itself. Walking across a living glacier, sipping fresh glacial meltwater, and peering into crevasses felt surreal. My brother even plunged into a frigid glacier pool—a freezing but unforgettable thrill! Details here.
  • Kennecott Mill Town Tour: Once a booming copper mining hub, the mill town of Kennecott is now a fascinating relic of Alaska’s past. We explored its towering 14-story mill building, worker housing, and other historic structures while guides brought the stories of this early 1900s industrial town to life. Walking through the red wooden buildings against the backdrop of glaciers and mountains felt like stepping back in time. More info here.

Other travelers we met raved about rafting and paddling trips on the area’s wild rivers—some even called it the highlight of their entire Alaska adventure. If you’re craving adrenaline and breathtaking scenery, it’s definitely worth considering. See rafting options here.

And if your budget allows, you can take your experience to new heights with a flightseeing tour over Wrangell–St. Elias. Flying above endless glaciers and landing in the middle of the icefields is a once-in-a-lifetime way to see just how massive and untouched this wilderness really is. Explore flights here.

From hidden ice caves to glacier hikes and historic mining relics, Wrangell–St. Elias delivers some of the most extraordinary adventures Alaska has to offer.

Why South Alaska?

Alaska is a land of contrasts—where glaciers meet the ocean, wildlife roams freely, and every corner feels like an untouched frontier. What makes it so special is that each region offers a completely different kind of adventure:

  • Juneau– the place for unforgettable whale watching and bear encounters, paired with glaciers and coastal charm.
  • Anchorage– a gateway to trails and parks where moose wander freely, with coastal paths perfect for biking and exploring.
  • Denali– six million acres of pure wilderness, where towering mountains and sweeping tundra set the stage for bears, hiking, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures.
  • Wrangell–St. Elias– the crown jewel for adventurers, with hidden ice caves, glacier treks, historic mining towns, and flightseeing tours that put you right in the heart of Alaska’s vast icefields.

Alaska isn’t just one destination—it’s many, each offering its own magic. Whether you’re drawn to wildlife, history, wilderness, or pure adventure, Alaska gives you the rare chance to step into a world that still feels wild and untamed.

Vancouver is one of those cities that feels like it was designed for summer travelers. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, it offers a rare blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and natural beauty. Whether you’re looking for serene moments in nature, indulgent culinary discoveries, or cultural gems, this Canadian jewel delivers.

Stanley Park

Stanley Park: The Soul of Vancouver

Every journey to Vancouver should begin with Stanley Park, the city’s crown jewel. I started my day at Prospect Point Lookout, where sweeping views of the Lions Gate Bridge and the coastal mountains set the tone. From there, I followed the Seawall (east), one of the most iconic walks in North America. Biking this route offers an effortless way to take in skyline views, totem poles, and the tranquil Rose and Shakespeare Gardens. The Lost Lagoon provides a peaceful finale before heading into downtown.

Downtown

Downtown Highlights

Downtown Vancouver is best explored on foot. Start at Harbour Park and head to Coal Harbour, where seaplanes glide across the water, then wander toward Canada Place, the city’s cruise port and architectural landmark. From here, the scenery opens up to mountain vistas, cargo ships, and vibrant harbor activity.

For a panoramic view of the entire city, the Vancouver Lookout is a must. Cultural travelers will also appreciate the Vancouver Art Gallery, while shoppers and foodies can indulge along Robson Street.

gastown

Gastown Charm

No visit is complete without experiencing Gastown. With cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and the famous steam clock, Gastown blends historic charm with a lively dining scene. I stopped for artisan ice cream and enjoyed live music—an ideal way to spend a summer afternoon.

Granville

By Water and by Garden

Another highlight was Granville Island, a hub of gourmet treats, artisan crafts, and fresh flowers. Arrive by False Creek Ferry—a charming way to hop between Science World, Yaletown, and the Maritime Museum. A day pass allows unlimited rides, perfect for exploring at leisure.

For nature lovers, the VanDusen Botanical Garden is an oasis of themed landscapes, from Japanese maples to blooming roses. Don’t miss the fun hedge maze if traveling with children

SUNSETS & BEACHES

Beaches and Sunsets

Vancouver’s beaches are where locals and travelers come together. English Bay and Sunset Beach are iconic spots to end your day, but my personal favorite was Kitsilano Beach, with its expansive shoreline, skyline views, and vibrant energy. I was fortunate to witness the Festival of Lights, a summer fireworks event that illuminates the bay with color and music—an unforgettable experience.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park & Grouse Mountain

Beyond the City

For those with extra time, a quick trip across the harbor brings you to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and Grouse Mountain, where you can pair adventure with breathtaking alpine views. And if you’re extending your stay, consider a day trip to Whistler or Victoria for even more luxury escapes.

Final Thoughts

Vancouver is an ideal summer destination for U.S. travelers seeking a blend of urban excitement and natural tranquility. In as little as three days, you can experience gardens, beaches, cultural landmarks, and culinary delights—all wrapped in the laid-back elegance of the Pacific Northwest.

Bonus!

Plane view

Don’t forget to take in the view from the plane—it’s part of the magic.

Victoria, British Columbia is one of those rare destinations that truly feels like stepping into a postcard. From scenic ferry rides and vibrant gardens to castle views and afternoon tea, every corner of the city is brimming with charm. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or simply craving a coastal escape, here’s a recap of my day in Victoria — a blend of highlights, favorite finds, and optional gems for your own perfect itinerary.

🛳 Getting There: Scenic Routes & First Impressions

I had planned to catch the 6:00 a.m. ferry from Vancouver… but ended up on the second one. The route is breathtakingly scenic as it weaves between forested islands and, fun fact: you actually cross into U.S. waters briefly before returning to Canada.

If you’re taking the ferry, layer up. A fleece and windbreaker are essential for enjoying the breezy outdoor decks where you’ll want to be soaking in the views.

Want something quicker? There’s also the option of flying in. The seaplane ride takes just 35 minutes and offers jaw-dropping aerial views of the islands and coastline.

BUTCHART GARDENS

Butchart Gardens: A Living Work of Art

First stop: the famous Butchart Gardens — a 55-acre explosion of color and serenity. You can explore it in about 90 minutes, and while there’s a suggested route, you can also wander. Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Sunken Garden: A former quarry turned fairytale landscape
  • Rose Garden: Bursting with over 250 varieties
  • Japanese Garden: Tranquil paths and peaceful ponds
  • Italian Garden: Elegant symmetry and fountains

I stopped for lunch at the gardens’ restaurant and had the seafood pesto pasta — fresh, flavorful, and the perfect mid-day indulgence.

VICTORIA HIGHLIGHTS

Victoria: Downtown Highlights

From Butchart Gardens, I headed downtown and booked the Hop-On Hop-Off bus, but if you want something more private you can definetly arrange a private driver.

This area (part of historic Chinatown) features colorful Victorian storefronts, funky boutiques, and Gold Rush roots. Don’t miss Fan Tan Alley, one of the narrowest streets in North America.

Nearby, you can find Bastion Square What was once the site of the historical Fort Victoria is now a lively plaza filled with galleries and sidewalk restaurants.

Just a short ride away, this whimsical floating neighborhood is full of colorful houseboats, fish-and-chips stands, and casual eateries. Locals say you might even spot seals! All of this might take you around an hour.

Inner Harbour & The Empress

Stroll along the harbor promenade and admire the Legislative Assembly of BC — you can even take a guided tour inside. Across the street, you’ll find The Fairmont Empress, Victoria’s crown jewel.

If you do just one “iconic” thing in Victoria, make it afternoon tea at the Empress. It’s not just a meal — it’s an experience full of fine china, scones, and a timeless elegance that captures the spirit of the city. Be sure to book in advance.

Exploring Victoria: Choose your own Adventure

🏙 Cook Street Village & Oak Bay Coastal Route

If you want to explore beyond downtown, I highly recommend a detour through Cook Street Village — a charming, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood perfect for grabbing a coffee, browsing local shops, or just soaking up the village vibe. From there, continue along the Oak Bay coastal route, a scenic drive that winds past breathtaking viewpoints and quiet beaches. Stop at the Oak Bay Marina for sweeping views of the San Juan Islands, enjoy a peaceful walk along Willows Beach. This stretch of the trip could take around 20 minutes to an hour depending on how much time you spend on the local shops or drinking a coffee.

🏰 Craigdarroch Castle & Government House Gardens

  • Craigdarroch Castle: Step inside this beautifully restored Victorian mansion. The architecture, furnishings, and stained glass tell the story of a Scottish baron’s legacy. (~60–90 minutes)
  • Government House Gardens: Free to enter and absolutely stunning. Explore the duck pond, herb garden, English country blooms, and peaceful walking paths. (~45 minutes)

🖼 Royal BC Museum

  • A great rainy-day option or history fix — this museum showcases Indigenous culture, local history, and natural wonders. You’ll find original totem poles and immersive exhibits. (~2 hours)

sunset ferry

Sunset Ferry Back to Vancouver

To end the day, I caught the 9:00 p.m. ferry back — and I highly recommend it. The sky lit up in shades of gold, peach, and violet as we sailed through the islands. It was the perfect, peaceful finale to a truly magical day.

Quick Tips:

  • 🧥 Bring layers, even in summer — especially for ferry rides and coastal stops.
  • 🍵 Book afternoon tea at The Empress in advance. It fills up quickly.
  • 🚌 Budget-conscious? Use the Hop-On Hop-Off bus or local buses (download the Umo app).
  • ✈️ Short on time? Fly into Victoria and ferry back at sunset.
  • 🌊 Always take the scenic route — trust me on this one.

Victoria is elegance wrapped in nature — where seaside strolls meet manicured gardens and historic castles share space with beachy hideaways. Whether you’re chasing blooms, sipping tea, or watching the sky melt into the sea, this little city delivers big-time.

Ireland, often called the “Emerald Isle,” is a destination that beckons travelers with its lush landscapes, rich history, and warm, welcoming culture. A luxury family vacation in Ireland offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion, perfect for creating lasting memories. Whether exploring ancient castles, marveling at the rugged coastlines, or enjoying the charm of quaint villages, the magic of Ireland captivates visitors of all ages. In this guide, we’ll explore why Ireland is a fantastic choice for a family getaway, the best times to visit, and how to make the most of your journey.

Why Ireland is a Perfect Family Destination

Ireland is a treasure trove of experiences that appeal to both young and old, making it an ideal destination for a family vacation. The country is steeped in history, with ancient castles, monastic ruins, and folklore that capture the imagination of children and adults alike. The Irish are known for their hospitality, ensuring that families feel welcome wherever they go.

The natural beauty of Ireland is another compelling reason to visit. From the rolling green hills of the countryside to the dramatic cliffs and serene beaches, the landscape is as varied as it is stunning. Families can explore the famous Ring of Kerry, hike in the Wicklow Mountains, or take a scenic drive along the Wild Atlantic Way, all while immersing themselves in the magic of Ireland. For animal lovers, visiting one of the many working farms offers the chance to interact with animals and learn about rural life.

Ireland also offers a wide range of family-friendly activities. Whether it’s kayaking on a tranquil lake, exploring ancient caves, or taking a boat trip to the Aran Islands, there are endless opportunities for adventure. The country’s cities, such as Dublin and Galway, offer a mix of cultural experiences, with museums, theaters, and festivals that cater to families. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway instead of a family adventure, Ireland may still appeal to you as well.

Visiting Ireland

When to Visit Ireland

Ireland is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. The summer months (June to August) are the most popular, offering the warmest weather and the longest days. This is the ideal time for outdoor activities, such as hiking, cycling, and exploring the coastal regions. Summer is also when Ireland hosts many of its vibrant festivals, providing an excellent opportunity for families to experience the local culture.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are also great times to visit and explore the magic of Ireland. The weather is mild, and the landscapes are stunning, with blooming flowers in spring and autumnal hues in the fall. These seasons are less crowded than summer, making it easier to explore famous sites without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season.

Winter (December to February) in Ireland is mild compared to many other parts of Europe, though it can be wet and windy. However, this is a magical time to visit if you’re interested in experiencing traditional Irish Christmas celebrations or enjoying the cozy ambiance of a country pub with a roaring fire. Winter also offers the chance to explore Ireland’s cities at a more relaxed pace, with fewer tourists around.

How to Get to Ireland

Ireland is easily accessible from many parts of the world, with several international airports. Dublin Airport (DUB) is the main gateway to the country and is well-connected to major cities across Europe, North America, and beyond. Shannon Airport (SNN) and Cork Airport (ORK) are other options, particularly if you plan to explore the country’s western or southern parts.

Direct flights from the United States, Canada, and Europe are readily available, making it convenient for families to reach Ireland. Once you arrive, renting a car is the best way to explore the country at your own pace, especially if you’re venturing outside the main cities. Ireland’s road network is extensive, and driving allows you to discover hidden gems off the beaten path.

For those who prefer not to drive, guided tours offer the convenience of pre-arranged transportation and expert insights into the country’s history and culture. Connect with your luxury travel advisor to ensure seamless transportation itinerary planning.

Day 4: Ashford Castle – A Day of Adventure

The castle’s origins date back to 1228, and it has been expanded and refurbished over the centuries to become the grand estate it is today, offering an unforgettable way to experience the magic of Ireland.

One of the highlights of a visit to Ashford Castle is the opportunity to participate in a falconry session, an experience that is both unique and exhilarating. Falconry, known as the “Sport of Kings,” has a storied history that dates back over 4,000 years and was originally developed as a means of hunting in ancient Mesopotamia. It later spread to Europe and became particularly popular during medieval times among the noble classes.

For an added experience, consider visit the castle via a lake cruise!

What to Expect During Your Falconry Session:

  • Introduction to Falconry: The cliffs are famous for their dramatic landscapes and vibrant wildlife, embodying the magic of Ireland. They are home to one of Ireland’s largest colonies of cliff-nesting seabirds, including puffins, razorbills, and guillemots. The area is designated a Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds, making it a significant site for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The best time to observe these seabirds in their natural habitat is during the breeding season, from late March to early July.
  • Hands-On Experience: You will be given a glove to wear, and the falconer will show you how to hold your arm correctly for the hawk to land. The sensation of having a hawk fly from a distance and land gently on your gloved fist is genuinely remarkable.
  • Walking with Hawks: Accompanied by a professional falconer, you will walk through the lush grounds of the estate. During the walk, the hawk will fly away and return to your glove on command, demonstrating their incredible training and trust in their handler.
  • Learning and Interaction: Throughout the experience, the falconer will share insights about the conservation of these magnificent birds and their behaviors in the wild. This is also a great opportunity to ask questions and interact closely with the birds.

Afternoon:

After a leisurely lunch in the Drawing Room, the men in the family can enjoy a round of golf on the estate’s 9-hole parkland course while the ladies take a horseback ride through the scenic grounds. For those not riding, a stroll through the estate’s gardens offers a tranquil escape.

We will stop here for a hike with spectacular views of Clew Bay and the surrounding countryside, so wear comfortable shoes and layers.
