Burnout is no longer a warning sign. It is a full-blown crisis. Recent reporting estimates that 66% of U.S. workers felt burned out in 2025, an all-time high, with overload still rising (Forbes). For companies, the stakes are steep. Lost productivity, turnover, health-care claims, and disengagement can total thousands of dollars per employee each year and more than five million annually for a 1,000-person firm (Forbes). Deloitte likewise found that 77% of employees have experienced burnout at their current job, many more than once (Deloitte).

EAST COAST SANCTUARIES FOR THE OVERWORKED

Canyon Ranch, Lenox, Massachusetts

In the Berkshires, this legend blends fitness and nutrition consultations with indulgent spa treatments and four-season outdoor time

In the Berkshires, this 120-acre property has operated as a comprehensive wellness destination since 1989. The model here is medical-grade assessment paired with immediate application: biometric screenings, nutrition consultations with registered dietitians, and movement prescriptions from exercise physiologists who understand desk-bound bodies.

The spa menu includes over 100 services, but the real value is in the integrative approach. You might pair a deep-tissue session with a consultation on sleep architecture, or follow a guided forest walk with a workshop on cognitive load management. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing across groomed trails; summer opens the lake for kayaking and paddleboarding. Four-season outdoor access matters when your daily life offers none.

Accommodations range from classic inn rooms to private cottages. Meals are included, and the culinary team builds menus around anti-inflammatory principles without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction. This is not a detox retreat. It is a recalibration program for people who need to return to high-demand roles with better operating systems.

The Lodge at Woodloch, Pennsylvania

The Lodge at Woodloch, Pennsylvania

About 95 miles from New York City, this all-inclusive retreat offers hydromassage pools, MindBody classes, creative arts workshops, and chef-driven dining.

Ninety-five miles from New York City, this all-inclusive property sits on 500 forested acres with a private lake. The appeal for executives is the contained environment: no decisions about where to eat, what to book, or how to spend your time. Everything is included, and the schedule is designed to remove friction.

Hydromassage pools use targeted water pressure for muscle recovery. MindBody classes cover breathwork, meditation, and somatic techniques that translate to boardrooms and long flights. Creative arts workshops (ceramics, painting, journaling) offer a cognitive shift that pure relaxation often cannot provide. When your work involves constant problem-solving, making something with your hands rewires the brain temporarily.

Chef-driven dining focuses on whole foods, omega-3-rich proteins, and complex carbohydrates that stabilize energy. Rooms are quiet, simply appointed, and designed for sleep. No televisions. No work calls bleeding into downtime. The Lodge succeeds because it removes the need to self-regulate while teaching you how to do exactly that once you leave.

WEST COAST ESCAPES FOR DECISION FATIGUE

Canyon Ranch Woodside, California

Canyon Ranch Woodside, California

Tucked into redwoods, this intimate property has glass-walled treehouses, private yoga, and expert workshops.

This 16-acre property in the Bay Area redwoods is Canyon Ranch’s most intimate offering. Treehouses with floor-to-ceiling glass bring the forest inside. Maximum capacity is 38 guests, which means access to practitioners is immediate and programming feels bespoke.

The focus here is executive retreat: private yoga sessions, one-on-one workshops with behavioral psychologists, and nutrition planning for people managing complex travel schedules and client dinners. The organic garden supplies the kitchen, and meals are served family-style to encourage connection without forced socialization.

Outdoor activity includes guided hikes through old-growth forest, mountain biking on fire roads, and restorative movement classes held on outdoor decks. Leaders who spend their days in decision fatigue come here for the kind of quiet that allows bigger thinking to surface. No agenda. No deliverables. Just space to think clearly again.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California

One of the few U.S. resorts with on-site natural mineral hot springs, offering KUR rituals at Willow Stream Spa, private golf access, and wine country immersion.

One of only a handful of U.S. resorts with natural thermal mineral hot springs on site. The water, sourced from an underground aquifer, reaches 135 degrees Fahrenheit and contains minerals that support muscle recovery and circulation. Willow Stream Spa offers KUR rituals (a European hydrotherapy tradition) that combine thermal bathing with massage, body treatments, and chromotherapy.

The property sits in Sonoma wine country, which means access to world-class vineyards, farm-to-table dining, and Michelin-level restaurants within a ten-minute drive. The concierge arranges private tastings and winery tours, allowing you to blend rest with cultural engagement. The 18-hole championship golf course adjacent to the property offers another way to decompress.

Rooms feature soaking tubs, fireplaces, and private patios. Service is polished but not intrusive. You can participate in group fitness classes, book private training sessions, or spend entire days cycling between thermal pools and treatment rooms. This is wellness for people who want sophistication alongside restoration.

The Ranch Malibu, California

The Ranch Malibu, California

Results-driven to the core: early hikes, yoga, plant-based cuisine, and daily massage.

Results-driven to the core. Early morning hikes range from four to eight hours depending on your fitness level and program tier. Daily yoga, plant-based meals in precise portions, and one hour of massage each afternoon. No caffeine. No alcohol. No phones during the day.

The program is structured and non-negotiable. You wake at 5:30 a.m., hike by 6:00 a.m., return for breakfast, attend fitness or yoga classes, eat lunch, receive bodywork, then participate in evening stretching or meditation. Dinner is communal. Lights out by 9:00 p.m.

Guests leave lighter, clearer, and sharper. The ROI is measurable: improved cardiovascular markers, reduced inflammation, better sleep patterns, and mental clarity that persists for weeks. This is not for everyone. It is for people who respond to structure, who want accountability, and who need to break patterns that medication and willpower alone have not addressed.

SOUTHWESTERN ESCAPES BUILT FOR TRANSFORMATION

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

A global standard in integrative wellness for decades, offering fully personalized programs for mind, body, and spirit with leading experts.

A global standard in integrative wellness for more than four decades. The Tucson property spans 150 acres in the Sonoran Desert foothills with views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. What differentiates this location is depth of expertise: physicians, acupuncturists, behavioral health specialists, physical therapists, and spiritual counselors all under one roof.

You build a fully personalized program. Consultations might include metabolic testing, hormone panels, sleep studies, or stress response assessments. Practitioners collaborate across disciplines, so your nutritionist and your therapist are reviewing the same data and coordinating recommendations.

Outdoor programming includes desert hikes, mountain biking, tennis, and guided meditation walks. The spa offers more than 40 types of massage and bodywork. Fitness classes range from aqua jogging to kickboxing to Pilates reformer sessions. Accommodations include casitas with private patios and desert gardens.

Meals are designed around your goals. If you are addressing insulin resistance, your plate reflects that. If you are managing autoimmune flare-ups, the kitchen adjusts accordingly. This is an executive retreat built entirely around you, with the clinical infrastructure to support measurable change.

In Boynton Canyon, 23 casitas host multi-night journeys that feel more spiritual than standard spa.

In Boynton Canyon, 23 casitas host multi-night journeys that feel more spiritual than standard spa. The property is designed around the concept of transformation rather than pampering. You select a journey theme (stress relief, mindfulness, personal growth, outdoor adventure) and your daily schedule builds from there.

Treatments draw from Native American traditions, Eastern medicine, and evidence-based bodywork. You might begin with a crystal therapy session, follow it with a guided meditation in the canyon, then close the day with deep-tissue work focused on releasing held tension. The approach is holistic without being dogmatic.

Privacy is paramount. Casitas are separated by native landscaping. Meals are served in a communal dining room, but conversation is optional. Many guests come here alone, seeking rare quiet away from roles that demand constant availability. The red rock canyon setting amplifies the sense of remove. You are unreachable here, by design.

BOOK WITH VIP AMENITIES

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona

Equine experiences, mindfulness workshops, and challenge courses sit alongside a renowned spa.

Equine experiences form the core of Miraval’s approach to presence and self-awareness. Horses respond to human energy in real time, offering immediate feedback on how you show up. For leaders accustomed to controlling outcomes, working with a 1,200-pound animal that cannot be managed through force is clarifying.

Beyond equine therapy, the property offers mindfulness workshops, aerial yoga, climbing walls, zip lines, and a desert labyrinth for walking meditation. The spa is excellent (over 30,000 square feet), but the real work happens in the experiential programming. Clarity often arrives in surprising ways, particularly when you step outside familiar modes of problem-solving.

Accommodations include desert-view rooms and private casitas. Meals are included and designed to support sustained energy rather than restriction. The resort operates on an all-inclusive model, removing transactional friction. You can participate as much or as little as you want. Many executives book five to seven nights to allow time for genuine recalibration.

SOUTHERN DESTINATIONS FOR SERIOUS RESTORATION

Lake Austin Spa Resort, Texas

Only 40 rooms on a serene lake, with paddleboard yoga, chef-led classes, kayaking, and a relaxed, intentional pace.

Only 40 rooms on 19 acres along Lake Austin. The intimacy of the property allows for highly personalized programming. You work with a wellness concierge to design your days: spa treatments, fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply reading by the water.

Paddleboard yoga takes place on the lake at sunrise. Chef-led classes teach you how to prepare nutrient-dense meals that fit into your actual life, not an aspirational version of it. The culinary team accommodates dietary needs without making it feel like a limitation.

Rooms are comfortable but not opulent. The focus is on the program, not the fixtures. Service is warm and attentive without hovering. This is a Condé Nast Traveler favorite because it delivers measurable restoration without pretension. You leave with tools, not just memories of being pampered.

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach

Mediterranean-style oceanfront haven with unobstructed beach access, three pools, and standout dining.

Mediterranean-style oceanfront property with unobstructed Atlantic views, three oceanfront pools, and four on-site restaurants. The Forbes Five-Star hotel and spa cater to guests who want luxury alongside wellness, not luxury instead of it.

The 20,000-square-foot ESPA offers thalassotherapy, Mediterranean-inspired treatments, and Finnish saunas with ocean views. You can book deep-tissue sessions, Ayurvedic treatments, or results-focused facials. Fitness programming includes beach yoga, aqua aerobics, and personal training.

The property is family-friendly, with a marine biology program for children that includes snorkeling and ocean conservation education. For executives traveling with family, this solves the problem of wellness travel that isolates you from the people you are trying to spend more time with. You can restore while your children engage in meaningful programming steps away.

Dining includes Il Mulino New York, Costa Grill, and AQ Chop House. Rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized balconies, and Italian linens. This is wellness for people who want sophistication, not simplicity.

The Takeaway for Professionals

Wellness is not a luxury. It is a strategic reset that improves performance, leadership, and resilience. Whether you choose the structure of The Ranch Malibu, the integrative programs at Canyon Ranch, or lakeside calm at Lake Austin, the outcome is similar. You return sharper, stronger, and more inspired.

If you are serious about leveling up your career, investing in your well-being is your next power move.

Three Ways to Make Your Wellness Retreat Count

  1. Unplug completely
Turn off notifications, set an out-of-office message, and give yourself permission to disconnect. Real rest requires psychological detachment from work.

  2. Go beyond the spa menu
Book at least one guided workshop or outdoor activity. Paddleboard yoga, equine therapy, or a mindfulness session can spark breakthroughs the massage table never will.

  3. Bring one practice home
Choose one ritual to keep. Morning meditation, mindful meals, or a daily walking meeting. Small, consistent shifts build long-term resilience.

How to book for VIP value

Turkey trip with teens

There is a moment I return to often. It was past 2 a.m., and the Turkish coastline was nothing but a dark silhouette against an even darker sky.

When our family embarked on our summer holiday to Turkey, my 16-year-old son stayed behind to practice water polo, planning to join us midway through the trip. The plot twist: that midpoint happened to fall while we were sailing the Antalya coast aboard a nine-person gulet. The original plan was simple, a driver would collect him from the airport around 9 p.m. and deliver him to a meeting point where he’d rendezvous with our captain.

Then the delays began. He missed his connecting flight, rerouted himself, and didn’t land until nearly 1 a.m. By then, the “meeting location” was a dot in the middle of the Mediterranean, with no proper dock in sight. A local driver took him as far as the road allowed: a pitch-black beach where the only light came from our tiny dinghy’s lantern, bouncing across the waves toward shore.

We picked him up like something out of a spy film, no pier, no lights, just a silhouette wading into the shallows. He climbed aboard laughing, exhausted, and utterly relieved that we’d found him. Grumbling that we were extremely irresponsible parents but also “kinda chill”.

No gift I have ever given my children has matched that memory. No carefully chosen birthday present, no thoughtful holiday surprise, no beautiful object no matter how expensive or meaningful has ever been recounted at family dinners the way that night in Turkey has. This is not a failure of gift-giving. It is a truth about how human beings are wired.

Adventure travel with young kids

Having taken my children to more than 20 countries, I have witnessed firsthand what decades of psychological research now confirms: the gift of travel creates something that material possessions simply cannot replicate. It shapes who our children become, how they think, and what they remember of their childhoods long after the wrapping paper has been forgotten.

The Science of Experiences Over Things

Every photograph reviewed, every story retold, every inside joke referenced at the dinner table years later rekindles the neurological and emotional benefits of the original experience.

The research is unambiguous. Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, has spent more than two decades studying why experiences make people happier than possessions. His findings reveal that the satisfaction we derive from material purchases fades predictably as we adapt to having them, a phenomenon psychologists call hedonic adaptation. The new car becomes just the car. The beautiful watch becomes simply the watch we wear. But experiences, particularly those shared with people we love, become part of our identity in ways that objects never do.

A 2020 study by Dr. Amit Kumar at the University of Texas at Austin reinforced these findings with a critical addition: experiences create more happiness not just during or after the event, but before it as well. His research, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, demonstrated that people report greater satisfaction from experiential purchases irrespective of when happiness is measured. The anticipation of a trip, the trip itself, and the memories afterward all contribute to a sustained sense of wellbeing that material goods simply cannot match.

Adventure travel with kids scuba diving

This brings us to dopamine, the neurotransmitter often called the brain’s “anticipation molecule.” Research from Harvard Business School by Dr. Michael Norton and his colleague Dr. Elizabeth Dunn demonstrates that dopamine is released not only when we receive a reward but when we anticipate it. Planning a vacation activates reward centers in the brain weeks or even months before departure. The excitement of researching destinations, choosing accommodations, and imagining adventures creates measurable increases in happiness. A material gift may spike dopamine briefly upon receipt, but that elevation returns to baseline within weeks. Travel, by contrast, offers three distinct phases of joy: the looking forward, the living through, and the looking back.

This is why the benefits of traveling extend far beyond the trip itself. Every photograph reviewed, every story retold, every inside joke referenced at the dinner table years later rekindles the neurological and emotional benefits of the original experience.

When Things Go Wrong, Everything Goes Right

My grandmother who had lived the first half of her life in the Soviet Union where apparently this was the best and only way to secure holiday accommodations, was unperturbed.

Here is where the research intersects with lived experience in ways that initially seem counterintuitive. The moments we remember most vividly from our travels are rarely the perfect ones. They are the misadventures, the unexpected detours, the situations that required us to adapt, problem-solve, and occasionally laugh at ourselves.

I think of the time we were driving through the Algarve region of Portugal and somehow found ourselves heading the wrong direction down a narrow, winding one-way road. For nearly a mile, we navigated hairpin turns and stone walls, unable to turn around. When we finally realized our error, we had no choice but to reverse the entire distance. We backed slowly, carefully, and ultimately right into a man’s property, where we managed to knock over and shatter his beautiful flower pot. I braced for anger. Instead, he emerged from his house with grace and humor, waving off our apologies with genuine kindness. My children still talk about that man. They do not talk about the perfectly executed days.

Travel in Europe with young children and teens

Or consider our arrival in Split, Croatia traveling with my grandmother and, at the time, two young children. In my younger days I loved using maps, the traditional old-school kind you’ll now likely only find in museums. I was adamant we could navigate without “navigation.”

Instead, we got lost. Went 25 miles in the wrong direction, ran out of phone battery, and arrived exactly in time to miss our boutique hotel’s check-in window. We found ourselves without accommodations in a city at 100% capacity.

No app could solve this. No algorithm stepped in.

So we went old school. While sorting out what to do and trying not to panic, a stranger kindly advised us we were in a pedestrian-only zone and would get a “big ticket.” Then he paused and asked if we needed a place to stay. His grandparents had passed away and left him their apartment; he rented it out to easygoing travelers who needed last-minute accommodations and had apparently never seen a scary movie. My husband was horrified. I was relieved. My grandmother who had lived the first half of her life in the Soviet Union where apparently this was the best and only way to secure holiday accommodations, was unperturbed.

Gift of travel Portugal Azores

He turned out to be extraordinarily helpful and welcoming, walked us to the apartment, gave us directions to the pier we needed to be at early in the morning and did not attempt to rob or murder us.

My children learned something that night about trusting the goodness of people, about adaptability, and about finding solutions in unfamiliar circumstances.

These are the experiences that build what psychologist Angela Duckworth calls “grit” and what author Paul Tough, in his book How Children Succeed, identifies as essential to lifelong achievement. Travel forces children into situations where persistence, resilience, and determination are not abstract concepts but immediate necessities. Research on child development consistently shows that children who encounter and overcome challenges develop stronger problem-solving abilities, greater emotional regulation, and increased confidence in their capacity to handle uncertainty.

What Travel Teaches That Classrooms Cannot

Adults who traveled regularly as children achieved above-average grades, higher educational attainment, and incomes 12% above average

The benefits of travel for kids extend well beyond character building. Cognitive research demonstrates that exposure to novel environments stimulates brain development in ways that familiar settings cannot. When children navigate new places, encounter unfamiliar languages, and adapt to different cultural norms, their brains form new neural pathways. A survey conducted by the Student & Youth Travel Association found that 76% of teachers reported increased cultural awareness in students after travel experiences. More striking still, a comprehensive study by the Travel Effect Project revealed that adults who traveled regularly as children achieved above-average grades, higher educational attainment, and incomes 12% above average compared to their less-traveled peers.

I witnessed this directly when I fell ill during a trip to Italy last month, and my children, now teenagers, had to navigate a day trip to Florence entirely on their own. They missed their first train because they had never navigated the European rail system before. They had to purchase new tickets with limited language skills. Hours of delays followed. But they made it. When they returned that evening, exhausted and proud, they had gained something no classroom could have provided: the lived experience of their own accomplishment.

Kids traveling in Austria

When my daughter was bitten by a tick while hiking in Austria, we faced the challenge of navigating European medical systems as outsiders. It was stressful in the moment. In retrospect, it was education in the deepest sense: an understanding that healthcare works differently in different places, that asking for help in an unfamiliar context requires courage, and that problems can be solved even when the rulebook is written in another language.

While stress-free family vacations are more enjoyable in the moment, having to pivot, adapt and overcome challenges actually cultivates new skills: not despite the stress but because of how families learn to manage it together.

The Nostalgia That Objects Cannot Evoke

There is a reason we do not gather around the coffee table to reminisce about the television we bought in 2015. Material possessions, no matter how beautiful or thoughtfully chosen, lack the narrative arc that memories require. They do not have a beginning, middle, and end. They do not feature characters, conflict, or resolution. They simply exist until they are replaced.

Thailand with kids

Travel, by contrast, is story. And the research on memory formation explains why these stories endure. Novel experiences are encoded more deeply because they require more cognitive processing. The brain pays closer attention when the environment is unfamiliar. This is why adults can recall details from childhood trips with startling clarity while forgetting entire years of routine. Memories shaped by strong feelings often become permanently etched in our minds. v

My children remember the taste of street food in Mexico. They remember the sound of waves against the dinghy in Turkey. They remember the expression on the Portuguese man’s face when we broke his flower pot and the relief when he smiled. These memories are not static. They evolve with each retelling, becoming richer and more meaningful as my children grow old enough to understand what they were actually learning in those moments.

A Different Kind of Investment

Children who travel learn this lesson viscerally. They learn that frustration is temporary, that problems have solutions, and that the discomfort of unfamiliarity is the price of growth.

The gift of travel is, in a meaningful sense, an investment. But unlike financial investments, the returns are not measured in currency. They are measured in perspective, in adaptability, in the capacity to feel at home in unfamiliar places. Research consistently shows that children exposed to diverse cultures develop greater empathy, stronger social competence, and more flexible thinking patterns.

For parents and grandparents considering how to invest in the young people they love, the evidence points clearly toward experiences. International family vacations are not luxuries reserved for a privileged few. They are formative experiences that shape how children understand themselves and their place in a complex world.

Kids traveling in Austria and Croatia

This is why we run marathons, sign up for difficult courses, and train for challenges that will test us. The accomplishment means more when it was hard.

Children who travel learn this lesson viscerally. They learn that frustration is temporary, that problems have solutions, and that the discomfort of unfamiliarity is the price of growth.

Planning Your Next Chapter

For families ready to embrace the gift of travel, the first step is simply to begin. Choose a destination that will stretch your family slightly beyond the familiar. Involve your children in the planning process, which itself activates those anticipatory dopamine pathways. Accept that things will go wrong and recognize that those moments may become the trip’s most valuable gifts.

Consider destinations that offer both adventure and education, places where history comes alive and where daily routines will be meaningfully disrupted. The top destinations for family travel are not necessarily the most exotic. They are the places that will challenge your family to grow together.

The Role of Expert Guidance

Europe with young kids

Navigating international travel with children requires thoughtfulness, and this is where working with a luxury travel advisor becomes invaluable. At Boutique Travel Advisors, we understand that family travel is about more than logistics. It is about creating conditions for transformation. We handle the complexity so you can focus on what matters: being present with your children as they discover the world.

The greatest gift we can give our children is not something that can be wrapped. It is the confidence that comes from solving problems, the empathy that grows from encountering differences, and the memories that will warm them for a lifetime. That gift is travel. And unlike any object, it only becomes more valuable with time.

On our trip, we quickly learned that the Irish are inherently charming, unpretentious, and very welcoming to tourists, despite past invasions, religious conflicts, and other significant losses.

The beautiful and mesmerizing landscape, friendly locals, and jubilant social scene of Ireland kept us enchanted and engaged as we explored different regions of this fairytale land. Due to its vast greenery, Ireland is often referred to as the Emerald Isle. Tales, folklore, and mythology led our journey and helped us understand the uniqueness of each kingdom. Wherever you are in Ireland, castles and tower houses are only a stone’s throw away, and a new adventure awaited us at every turn in the road.

Our Guide to a 9 to 10 Day Itinerary to Ireland

Our Guide to a 9 to 10 Day Itinerary to Ireland

Our itinerary involved exploring the most captivating scenery, from coastlines to open fields filled with grazing sheep, cows, and horses.

Emerald isle Ireland open fields filled with grazing sheep, cows, and horses

We enjoyed pubs and live music in neighborhood-like towns while locals convened with violins and drums, playing eclectic yet classic Irish tunes.  Abbeys, castles, and churches emerged around unforeseen curves in the road, causing tourists like us to detour and break away from our carefully planned itineraries suddenly.

Although we had been thoroughly prepared to embrace the classically rainy Irish weather, our trip consisted of warm sunny days and beautiful crisp mornings.  To our amusement and excitement, the locals declared that we were enjoying Ireland’s “best” weather since 1976.  We were thrilled and grateful to have long days to explore the many wonders we encountered.

Although Ireland is ideally visited from mid-May through September, the weather is typically rainy and chilly, even during peak season.  Tourists expecting sunshine and short sleeves might be disappointed to learn that summer on the Emerald Isle typically brings afternoon rains with temperatures lingering in the 50s and 60s. Plan on packing rain gear and layers and embrace the weather as part of the charm and identity of this country.

Although we had carefully planned our route to maximize our time, a week is not long enough to see and experience all we had hoped.  Preferably, plan for 9-10 days to explore several counties like Dublin, Kilkenny, Cork, Kerry, Clare, and Galway.

Dublin is a vibrant city on a river.  A walk along the enchanting Liffey River gives a sense of everyday life in this metropolis.  Tourists, politicians, and business professionals mingle with local crowds patronizing the more than 100 pubs which line the banks. On the Northside of Liffey, stroll the trendy street of O’Connell.  South of Liffey is Trinity College and the trendy (but old streets) of Temple Bar.  For beer enthusiasts who wish to tours the Guinness brewery or whiskey fans excited to experience the Jameson Distillery, keep in mind that you are not alone, and Dublin tours are best booked well in advance.

While walking in Dublin, explore the campus of Trinity College (including its extravagant library and plush gardens). Next, visit the grounds of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the adjacent Christ Church Cathedral. Next, go to Phoenix Park, arguably the most beautiful park in Dublin (not to mention one of the largest parks in Europe). Meander to the Hole in the Wall for a refreshment, maybe two.  If traveling with small children, you will also want to stop by the Dublin Zoo, conveniently located in Phoenix Park.

While it is tempting to choose the touristy Temple Bar area to quench your thirst and hunger, we recommend that you venture further out to experience a more authentic side of the bustling city. For modern Irish-European cuisine, try Winding Stair or Woolen Mills, sister restaurants located on the north side of the Liffey on Ormond Quay.  For fine dining, The Greenhouse, Shanahan’s, Stoop Your Head, and Mulberry Tree also comes highly recommended by our Irish friends.

Our preferred suppliers in Dublin include the Westin, Fitzwilliam Hotel, Merrion Hotel, and Westbury.  Book your stay at any of these properties with BTA and receive additional amenities such as complimentary breakfast daily, food & beverage credits, welcome amenities and upgrades, early check-in, and late check-out upon availability.

Day Trip to Northern Ireland from Dublin

Day Trip to Northern Ireland from Dublin

Northern Ireland is a popular full-day trip from Dublin, with tours starting at 6:45 am and returning to Dublin around 8/8:30 pm.  Tours typically include the romantic Dark Hedges, spectacular Giant’s Causeway (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), scenic Ballintoy Harbour, mysterious Cushendun Caves, and the metropolitan city of Belfast. Many visitors to Belfast stop to honor and remember the many lives lost at the Titanic Memorial Garden.  Allow two to three nights in Dublin to incorporate an experience of Northern Ireland into your itinerary. Consider spending the night for a more relaxed and unhurried excursion or booking a day or multi-day tour of Northern Ireland.

Kilkenny

Undeniably we fell in love with Kilkenny. A beautiful and charming, quintessentially Irish town with a population of just over 26,500 and a reasonable drive from Dublin (less than 2 hours heading south), it is not to be missed! This town is also home to one of the finest castles in Ireland, also of the same name – Kilkenny Castle.

St. Canice’s Cathedral is equally impressive.  Plan on spending a full day in the downtown area. Travelers quickly lose sight of time walking along the cobblestone streets of Kilkenny, exploring art galleries and boutique shopping and the medieval ruins around town.

Kilkenny, not surprisingly of Ireland, offers a lively pub and food scene. For example, take Langton’s Restaurant and Bar voted Pub of the Year by various outlets so many times it no longer participates in competitions.  Left Bank is another hot spot with live music and different dining scenes within the same establishment, from casual to more upscale.

Kilkenny

Situated 20 minutes outside of Kilkenny is the charming Mount Juliet Estate.  This spectacular property is also home to a Jack Nicklaus golf course, which proudly hosted the 2002 and 2004 WGC-American Express Championship and the European Tour’s Irish Open on three occasions between 1993 and 1995.  Despite its worthy namesake on the golf circuit, this luxury retreat equipped with a spa, lavish gardens, archery, horses, and other recreational activities is “a hidden gem” to most foreign travelers.  When traveling from downtown Kilkenny provide yourself enough time before dark to make way to your hotel. It truly is a maze spanning from the main drags onto the single-lane roads to your fortress for the night.

Expect to meet local and other Irish travelers.  We met folks who reside within the vicinity of Kilkenny and other Irish visitors from Cork and Clare, enjoying a weekend holiday away.  Oblivious to the passage of time, we became obsessed with learning how to see this great country like the Irish.  Our new friends, Mary and Mike, both well-traveled winos and foodies (as well as hurling enthusiasts, the “national” sport of Ireland), kindly shared their wealth of knowledge and personal experiences. Let’s say we learned the “craic.” A common phrase used in Ireland to describe whether you have any news or gossip is “What’s the craic?”

If staying two nights in Kilkenny, consider a day trip to Waterford (about 30-minute drive south).

Cork

Cork

This 800-year old city (population approximately 195,000) is a city worth stopping to see on your trek from coast to coast.  Cork is probably best known internationally for its proximity to Blarney Castle, where visitors are invited to kiss the famed stone. In return, they are said to receive the gift of eloquence. Unfortunately, our time did not permit an overnight in Cork; however, this place should be on your itinerary for the culinary experience alone.

The Ring of Kerry

It’s said in Kerry that “There are only two kingdoms, the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Kerry.” Ring of Kerry is best traveled by car in a counterclockwise direction, but any traveler to this magical place should make it a goal to get lost here.  Hotel accommodations and bed & breakfast populate Kenmare, Killarney, and Dingle.  Kenmare is a village town with an intimate setting; whereas, Killarney or Dingle is a bit more touristy but still maintains their unique identities.

The Ring of Kerry

A must-do for the active hiker and Star Wars fan is a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Skellig Islands.  On the summit of this breathtaking rock is a well-preserved sixth-century monastic settlement, standing 714ft above sea level.  The landing tour to Skellig Islands sells out months in advance, with only a limited number of boats allowed daily onto the island.

Stay in Killarney or a surrounding area for a minimum of two to three nights, and arrive at least a day before you tour Skellig Islands.  Plan on enjoying time at Killarney National Park, visiting the lively downtown, and, if time permits, take a day trip to Dingle (which is further northwest along the coast).

Clare

UNESCO Global Geoparks, Cliffs of Moher, and Burren are must-sees during your time in Clare.  Expect murky weather, but in our opinion, the fogginess along the hike up the cliffs only adds to the mystery of this magnificent site.  Our accommodations in Clare provided us the royal treatment and exceptional amenities.  We stayed at the recently renovated Dromoland Castle, which has been welcoming guests since the 16th century.

Clare

Although not in Clare County, another great castle to experience royal accommodations in Ireland is the Adare Manor Hotel, located just about an hour further south.

BOOK WITH VIP AMENITIES

Galway

Our next trip to Ireland will undoubtedly include visiting Ireland’s bustling 5th largest city, Galway.  This city is popularly known as the “City of the Tribes” in honor of its founders – 14 families from distinctly different backgrounds.  Galway continues to be a place of celebration of individuality and diversity.  Venture about 45 minutes further north from Galway to experience a captive stay at Ashford Castle’s 13th-century building.

Transportation

Many tourists prefer a self-driving itinerary through Ireland.  While driving in Ireland is a little intimidating, traveling on these narrow, winding roads is part of the excitement.  Before you leave your trip, be sure to seek guidance on rental car insurance.  Major landmarks and directions to cities are well marked. However, the traffic and conditions of the roads, not to mention driving on the other side of the road, can be challenging for some tourists.

Pathway in a green forest

Consider your driving comfort level, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.  Many travelers opt for customized itineraries that include private drivers or pre-arranged tours. BTA can arrange an itinerary based on your specific needs directly with our preferred suppliers based in Ireland.

Travel by air is also possible.  Itineraries flying in and out of different cities, including Dublin, Cork, and Shannon, and returning to the United States are viable options.

Ireland’s History

A land of contradictions and invasions, Ireland has experienced rises and falls over centuries. Celtics led the earliest raids from Europe around 300 BC.  The continuation of invasions further marked territories and shaped the people.

The rise of Christianity greatly influenced by St. Patrick began 600 years later, and in 700 AD, Viking and North invaders began to settle on the island. But, as with most of Europe, peace was fleeting and unpredictable. England’s long involvement with Ireland began following an intervention between two Irish kings in dispute.  At the top of Ireland’s worst sufferings was the Great Famine of the 1840s and 1850s.  The horrifying potato famine killed a million people and forced another million to emigrate from the country.  Many believed that the English should have done more to aid the starving people.  This common belief propelled the resistance against English rule.  A long and bloody struggle for independence was fought until 1922, when a free state was born.  The free state was named Ireland in 1937 and officially declared a republic in 1948.  Ireland consists of twenty-six counties, and separately there are six other counties, known as Northern Ireland, which remain part of the United Kingdom.

During the 70s and 80s, Ireland’s economy was amid decline, and emigration was again on the high.  However, the 90s was a time of unprecedented economic growth until the global crisis of 2008.  Today, Ireland’s economy is on the rise. Immigration is in flux, and tourism is booming, giving BTA every reason to make Ireland one of our destinations for Summer 2019.

10. Game Of Throne:

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones

For those of us who spent years arduously following the convoluted plotlines, dragon tales, white walker attacks, unexpected births, deaths, and marriages of one of the most popular TV shows ever created, Croatia is a fan mecca. But, of course, the Game of Thrones world wasn’t made in a movie studio.

King’s Landing, the setting of much of the show’s plotline, is almost entirely filmed in the genuine UNESCO World Heritage city of Dubrovnik.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that it has drawn thousands of anxious fans to its borders since the show’s inception. But can you pick out the scenes featuring the city walls? First, go early in the morning on a guided experience to beat the heat and crowds. Then, you can climb the stone steps for a small fee and walk the entire city’s circumference, which offers a spectacular view of the historic rooftops and the Adriatic Sea glistening in the background. You may even spot Tyrion broodingly contemplating his allegiances in the distance.

For those of you looking to connect with the character’s plights a bit more closely, follow the path of Cersei’s atonement walk along the Jesuit Stairs located off of St. Dominika Street. After purchasing your very own “Shame Bell,” you can head out to the Tresteno Arboretum and walk the gardens of the Red Keep. Can you name the alliances forged and broken amidst the flowering trees and romantic paths?

After you have thoroughly explored the central filming locations, head out to find the holy grail of the show, you guessed it, the Iron throne! Located on the island of Lokrum, the most important symbol of the show can be seen in a small museum, a short 15-minute ferry ride from the Old City’s main port.

9. Historical Sights:

Diocletian's Palace

Both the Ancient Greeks and Romans settled Croatia and subsequently defended against Venetians and Ottomans. From the Istrian Peninsula to Dalmatia, visitors will find over 2,000 years of the tumultuous and often brutal history.

The most easily accessible and famous sight is Diocletian’s Palace, located in Split and built around 300 ACE. Walk through historical ruins in the main square of Peristil and find yourself transported back in time. Pass relics that were brought in throughout the centuries and preserved in various stages as the city grew and evolved. Some exciting sights include an ancient Egyptian sphinx from Luxor, the Temple of Jupiter, and Diocletian’s mausoleum, which was later transformed into the Split Cathedral. However, perhaps the most fascinating thing is that Diocletian’s Palace is still home to a community of residents who own shops, hotels, and restaurants within the palace walls.

Take a private Split history and foodie tour or a highlights tour to experience the city through the eyes of a historian.

If you skipped over the Game of Thrones facts, you might have missed the part about Dubrovnik’s City Walls. These beautifully preserved and incredibly symbolic architectural masterpieces were built in the mid-1300s after liberation from the Venetians as a necessity for protection from further attacks. They were created to withstand time but also represent wealth and beauty. While most people choose to spend a few nights in Dubrovnik, doing a day trip visit from Split is also possible with a great guided itinerary.

Some other incredible sights include the well-preserved Roman-era Pula Amphitheater, the 13th century Trogir Cathedral and the walls of Ston.

8. Zagreb:

Zagreb

Although the city doesn’t make most people’s radar aside from a place to fly in and out of, it’s worthy of a couple of days of your time. This large yet quaint and safe city offers unlimited possibilities for music and theatre events, art exhibitions, museums, dining, and quintessential European strolling in the spacious pedestrian zones and over 30 parks. A perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside and getting off the beaten path. Zagreb certainly qualifies as one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia.

7. National Parks:

Krka National Park

While it’s true that most visitors come to Croatia for the infamous beaches and islands, in the know travelers recognized that Croatia is known for offering s a cornucopia of outdoor adventures with stunning mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and wild forests.

The countries’ eight national parks are hugely popular with European travelers in Summer but largely quiet the rest of the year.

Visit during the spring to see wildflowers blanketing the hillsides. Come in autumn for gorgeous foliage. Or venture out to explore snow-covered trees and the magical silence of winter.

Kornati Islands Natioanl Park

One of the most interesting Parks is the Kornati Islands, located just off the coast between Zadar and Sibenik and are 140 separate islands. Although off the radar for most tourists, they are pretty famous in the yachting world for being one of the best sailing destinations in Europe with calm waters and relaxing winds. Sail from Zadar or take a speedboat tour.

Krka National Park

If swimming through waterfalls is your idea of a perfect day, then a visit to Krka National Park, whose claim to fame is the multi-tiered wedding cake waterfall of Skradinski Buk, is a must. Spend the first part of the trip taking the trail uphill, which heads to the top of the waterfall for gorgeous photo-ops, then through the upper sections where wooden platforms have been set up to allow walking over the rivers. Finally, end your day trip with a swim under the waterfalls in the beautiful crystal clear water. Visit Krka on a relaxing day trip from Zadar.

Mljet National Park

Dubrovnik to Mljet National Park offers another fantastic day tip option. Located in the northwestern section of Mljet Island, the park includes two salt lakes, with the larger Veliko Jezero showcasing a Benedictine monastery. Spend a quiet day kayaking, cycling, hiking, and swimming. As motor vehicles are forbidden anywhere in the national park, it retains its sense of solitude and romance even in peak season. Take a boating day trip from Dubrovnik and experience it firsthand.

6. Plitvice Lakes National Park:

Plitvice Lakes

Yes, we recognize that this is another National Park. However, Plitvice Lakes deserves its section. This mountain wonderland is a spectacular feat of nature, showcasing 16 interconnected lakes linked by rivers and waterfalls. The best way to see this area is overnight but many travelers make do with a long but worthwhile day trip from Split

High in minerals, the lakes are constantly changing colors, appearing emerald green one moment, cobalt, aquamarine, or cerulean the next depending on how the light hits them.

Spend a few hours walking on wooden pathways over the crystal water while being surrounded by waterfalls and extensive wild forests. There are two main trails in the park. Trail A circles the two lower lakes, descending from the cliff tops down and crossing one of the lakes on a wooden platform before climbing up again. Trail B follows the same path but also reaches Kozjak lake, the largest lake in Plitvice. A boat will take you across the lake for a short scenic ride, and a small train will take you back towards entrance 1 to complete the visit.

Note: Trail K, which is over 18 km long, can take you to the top of the northernmost upper lake. This is a spectacular hike that takes around 8 hours to complete. Plan to spend the night in the area if you are hiking Trail K. Check the official Plitvice site for more information.

Although definitely “out of the way” from most main tourist hubs, a visit to Croatia would be incomplete without visiting a world wonder. Spend a night or take a day trip from Zagreb or Split. The trails are extremely well marked and easily navigated, and this park is ideal for strolling at leisure. Plitvice Lakes is absolutely one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia.

The Food:

Croatian cuisine

Traditional Croatian cuisine is wide and varied, yet thoroughly infused with Mediterranean flavors influenced by neighboring countries and nations which have ruled the territories over the centuries.

Epicureans will note similarities with Italian, Austrian, Hungarian, and even Turkish cuisine. Yet, Croatian dishes have their own unique and distinct flavors, which vary from region to region.

Along the Dalmatian coast and islands, the cuisine is based heavily on the Mediterranean diet, heavy in fish, salads, and olive oil. However, if you venture closer to Zagreb, the flavors change to central European countries with meat, potatoes, and cabbage. The Istrian peninsula has more exciting and varied dishes like manestra, a bean soup prepared only in Istria, or fuzi, a hand-rolled pasta.

Traditional dishes which will tantalize your taste buds:

Crni rizot: Found in nearly every seafood restaurant in Croatia, this black squid risotto typically contains mussels, clams, and other shellfish. This is a must-try!

Pasticada: Baby beef fillet, marinated in wine vinegar for several days before being braised for hours, first in its juice, and later with red wine, this prevalent Dalmatian dish is served with homemade gnocchi.

Skampi na buzaru: A traditional seafood scampi with muscles, shrimp, or clams.

Strukli: Somewhat similar to a pirogi this is a pastry filled with cottage cheese and sour cream. Served mainly in the region around Zagreb.

Punjene paprike: More common in Turkish cuisine the Croatian variation of stuffed peppers includes minced meat, rice, and spices, cooked with tomato sauce.

Fritule: Another favorite dessert these dough balls are made with flour, raisins, lemon zest, and schnapps, and of course, deep-fried

Arancini: These are traditional Croatian desserts made of candied orange peels.

Krostule: This delicious deep-fried dough is sprinkled with powder sugar and melts in your mouth.

4. Scuba Diving:

Croatia scuba diving

Blessed with an entire coastline of crystal clear Adriatic water, it should come as no surprise that Croatia offers divers a plethora of diving opportunities. In addition, around 1000 islands found off the coast in Croatia are adorned with canyons, reefs, underwater caverns, and chilling shipwrecks. So spend a day, a week, or a lifetime island hopping in search of your hidden corner of underwater paradise.

Dives around the island of Vis offer WWI and WWII shipwrecks fallen in battle as well as a B-17 bomber. The gulf of Kvarner to the North is known for amazing wall dives and rocky reefs covered with beautiful gorgonians. If you are interested in exploring the Blue Cave, head to Bisevo. The cave is accessible only via small boats.

3. Dubrovnik:

Dubrovnik

We simply can’t get enough of the city dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” If historical sites and filming locations did not entice you, the city offers various cultural activities and festivals. Stroll the picturesque streets and alleyways, admire the splendid cathedral and treasury, grab a bite to eat, and visit art galleries featuring both modern and traditional works of art.

Start your day early, climb the steps to the city walls, and head over to the infamous, pedestrian-only Pile Gate, which served as the main entry point to the old city. Built in 1537 and formerly surrounded by a moat and complete with a drawbridge, it is as scenic as historic.

Afterward, take a stroll over to the once Grandiose fountain of Onofrio. (Somewhat smaller today than the original due to damage in the earthquake of 1667). After lunch, make sure to visit the beautiful Dubrovnik Cathedral-also referred to as the Assumption Cathedral. The highlights here are paintings by Italian and Dalmatian artists from the 16th to 18th centuries.

One of the most prominent pieces in the Assumption Cathedral is the beautiful painting of the assumption of Mary, done by Titian around 1552. Other relics include a portion of Jesus’ crucifixion cross and the head, leg, and arm of St. Blaise from the 13th century.

After a day of touring, head to the spectacular Stradun, one of Europe’s most picturesque pedestrian thoroughfares. It is lined with cafés and restaurants, so pick a spot to rest and people watch over an espresso. Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and one of the top sights in Croatia.

2. Croatia’s Islands:

Ok, so there is a reason that most tourists understand that Croatia is known for the stunning coastline, clear waters, and plethora of islands. However, the most challenging task is choosing which of the 1000 islands to see and which ones to skip over. Although primarily based on personal preferences, these are the top 5 islands that would appease even the most discerning islands hopper. Each of these islands qualifies as one of the top 10 reasons to visit Croatia, but you will have difficulty choosing just one.

If you only have a day explore the Croatian coast by private boat from Split to get a taste of this magical region.

Hvar:

Hvar

A truly sophisticated place to see and be seen. This glamorous jewel is akin to St. Tropez, full of beautiful shops, streets, and people. While known as a celebrity and party-goer hot spot, it is also full of hidden coves, romantic vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields, and an incredibly preserved Španjola fortress. Hvar is undoubtedly one of the top sights in Croatia.

Consider taking a cruise that includes a stopover at Hvar to experience the region and get a taste of the different islands.

Brac:

Most people visit Brac to spend time on its famous beach ‘Zlatni Rat.’ However, there is so much more to see and do. Take a 50-minute ferry journey from Split, and discover this low-key happy place. From beaches emerging like secret gifts from the pine forests to secluded bays and up to Vidova Gora, the highest peak in the Croatian islands, you can spend weeks exploring and relaxing. In addition, there are several towns complete with romantic squares, fountains, cobblestone streets, phenomenal restaurants, and fun bars.

Elaphiti Islands:

These quiet and relaxing islands are well connected to Dubrovnik by ferries and can be reached in 30- 50 minutes. They make an ideal escape from the hustle of Dubrovnik and can be visited on day trips or for a weekend getaway. Make sure to visit Sipan Island, which boasts its own (rare) sandy beach, and spend a day strolling the wonderfully traffic-free Lopud.

Korcula:

This historical island claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo. It is reminiscent of a mini-Dubrovnik with a beautiful old town and outstanding gothic and romantic architecture examples. Spend your days exploring the various beaches, kayaking along the shores, snorkeling in the clear warm water, or wine tasting with local sommeliers. Tip; Korcula is well known for its very own crisp white wine.

Mljet:

We have already covered Mljet in the national park section. This island is a favorite with nature lovers, hikers, and visitors searching for quiet seclusion. Most visitors come for day trips. Therefore evenings are usually crowd-free, even in the peak season. Best experienced by multi-day sailing trips.

Interesting Fact: This is where Odysseus spent seven years frolicking with his nymph Calypso.

1. The People:

A top 10 list for this country would not be complete without a nod to the people that have made it one of our favorite countries in Europe. Beautiful inside and out, Croatian’s are known for their warmth, hospitality, and friendliness. Whether spending a week island hopping, traveling with friends, family, or even on a solo journey, you will find that you leave with so much more love, appreciation, and friendships than you came with or could have ever hoped for.

Croatia is one of the most incredible destinations in Europe. While there is plenty to see and do, many visitors choose to combine their trip with a visit to other countries. If you want to explore the region in more depth, we recommend visiting Italy, Greece, or France.

On our recent European adventure, we discovered the authentic side of Portugal in the Algarve and magical Alentejo. When I started planning my trip to Portugal, I received more mixed information and varying opinions than any trip in my recent memory. From some, I heard that Portugal was incredible, unspoiled, and beautiful with all the best features of Europe without the massive crowds, tour groups, or exorbitant prices.

I listened to stories about the outstanding food with delicious fresh fish, enormous lobsters, seafood stews, homemade desserts, and crisp wines. Friends raved about the stunning scenery, clean beaches, well-preserved medieval towns, and beautiful cities.

I got feedback from others that the country was crowded, overdeveloped, and nearly devoid of charm and authenticity. I heard that it was hard to find a spot on the beach, almost impossible to get truly local food and that the hotels, condos, and apartment buildings had overtaken the once stunning coastlines. I was not yet sure how to plan my own version of this Portugal 10 Day Family Vacation, but I was determined to find out how one relatively small country could conjure such mixed emotions and opinions. When we arrived in the airport of Faro and headed to the rental car agency, the man who checked us out was surprised that we could drive a manual vehicle, would be venturing out past the tourist meccas of Algarve, and that we aimed to see and experience an authentic, off-the-beaten-path side to his country.

Why Not Lagos

When we mistakenly arrived in Lagos because our navigation could not register the address of our hotel, I immediately understood where the negative comments arose from. The city was large, overbuilt, and crowded. While the marina held some lovely stores and the historic streets were clean and organized, there was no indication that we were actually in Portugal.

For all the construction, apartment buildings, and fish and chip shops, we could just as quickly have landed in any of the other sadly overdeveloped coasts of Europe. Everyone spoke English. Few spoke native Portuguese. It was a cliché and disappointment, but I was determined to look deeper.

To find our hotel location, we had to take down handwritten directions from the receptionist who spoke moderate English and told us that navigation could not register the address as it did not actually exist (yet). We would have to drive along the coast. When we were approximately halfway past the signs for the beach of Luz, turn off and look for a billboard with directions toward Dona Maria and an unmarked yellow building containing the reception. Disorganized and slightly maddening? Sure, but this was a far better alternative for us than the town from which we had just come.

It took us many wrong turns and some interpretative requests for directions from older Portuguese passersby’s who spoke no English to locate the correct “yellow building” without a sign amongst a sea of other yellow buildings on a beaten-down road. For more inspiration check out our article on How to Plan the Perfect Adventure Based Itinerary to Portugal.

Burgau, Portugal

Magical Villages

The hotel we had chosen was a bit of a disappointment, the result of last-minute changes to our itinerary when I decided to add the Algarve region to our Portugal adventure. The rooms were run down and did not live up to their 4* claims (something that frequently happens in Europe, stars are a relative designation open to interpretation), but it had a glorious view and a perfect location. If you are looking for an authentic Portugal experience in Algarve, our recommendation is to stay in Carvoeiro or one of the other nearby towns.

The development was lovely and clean, with some spectacular homes clinging to the hills and overlooking the ocean. But the best part was the hiking path in front of our room that ran along the ocean’s cliffs, connecting two tiny and perfectly authentic villages. Turn left, and a ten-minute walk brought us to a spectacular little town of Luz with a glorious beach, delicious seafood restaurants, tiny cafes, and a few gelato shops. Turn right, and another 15-minute walk brought us straight down the side of a cliff into the tiny village of Burgau. This is precisely the authentic side of Portugal’s Algarve and magical Alentejo we were looking for.

Benagil Caves, Portugal

Benagil Caves, Portugal

This was the Portugal I had imagined.  Intimate cobbled streets, pastel-painted houses, clothes hanging on lines outside the windows, and locals playing with their children in the waves. Undoubtedly, there were tourists, but for a day in mid-July, we could have our pick of spots on the beach, never waited more than 10 minutes for a table, and had some of the most incredible and inexpensive seafood of our lives.

We spent our time exploring the villages by our hotel and the stunning beach towns of Carvoeiro and Salema, where we had the best meal of our entire trip at Agua Na Boca, a quaint restaurant where the owner was our waiter. We ventured into Sagres in search of surf-worthy waves but finding instead the remains on an ancient fortress and nearly abandoned beach. We took a precarious boat ride to explore the famous Caves of Benagil and swam in the chilly waters of the wild Atlantic Ocean. Choosing to enter Lagos only for the necessity of catching our boat ride, we clung to the yet unspoiled villages and tiny coved beaches.

Authentic Alentejo

While the Algarve gets most of the attention, beyond its better known resort towns lies a landscape that remains refreshingly undeveloped. Just north, Alentejo moves at a slower pace. It is a region shaped by culinary traditions, vineyards, ancient settlements, and long stretches of coastline that feel largely untouched. Development here has been deliberate, slow and in many places, barely perceptible, which is precisely its appeal.

On our drive toward Cascais, we explored only a small portion of Alentejo, enough to understand how much more there is to see. The experience left me feeling that I had only barely scratched the surface and could not wait to return for more. This is a part of Portugal that invites time, patience, and repeat visits, not a checklist approach. I am already planning a future stay at L’AND Vineyards Relais & Châteaux for an ideal base to explore much more of this region. Set among vineyards and open plains, this eco hotel represents the kind of thoughtful hospitality that aligns naturally with Alentejo’s character.

This area, mostly known for wineries and vineyards, is also home to some of Portugal’s most stunning beaches and coastlines, yet few visitors are lucky enough to see them. There are also remarkable traces of long-lost civilizations, Roman ruins, Arab forts, and the simple churches of early Christianity. Sadly, we did not have the time to explore the Rota dos Castelos (Castle Route), which connects the lovely medieval villages of Nisa, Castelo de Vide, Marvão, Portalegre, and Alter do Chão, but we did visit the beaches.

Straddling the Northern border between Algarve and Alentejo, in the natural park of the Costa Vicentina lies one of the beautiful beaches in the world, Odeceixe. We spent a day here, but one could easily spend a summer and maybe even a lifetime. Bridging the gaps between past and present, tradition and progress, the town of Odeceixe clings to its roots as steadily as the homes clinging to the cliffs.

Salema, Portugal

From there, we ventured on to one of the most charming towns in Europe in Zambujeira do Mar, where most of the menus were in Portuguese, and our waiter had to grab a friend so we could place our order, not entirely sure what we would be getting. Locals and tourists were co-existing everywhere we went in a blissful display of holiday relaxation and authentic happiness.

Our children played in the ocean and got yelled at by lifeguards who they could not understand but could gather that they had ventured too far into the unpredictable sea. They made friends with children who were curious to hear my children speaking a language usually reserved for television cartoons.

Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

Zambujeira do Mar, Portugal

We went off the beaten path, never feeling unsafe, unwelcome, or disappointed. Instead, finding charm, culture, history, and challenges brought us closer as a family and as people in this big world. This was Portugal  – the way we imagined and one who will have us coming back to over and over again. Discovering the authentic side of Portugal’s Algarve and magical Alentejo gave a true sense of the beauty and charm of this country.

Of course, it would have been simpler to book the trendy hotels found in Lagos, or Faro, which many travelers are happy to call home.  However, for our family, avoiding the chaos and frustration of getting lost along unmarked roads would have meant missing out on the beauty of a country hidden just around the corner and the charming locals anxiously awaiting to share their culture, cuisine, and boundless hospitality.

Some journeys invite you to slow down; others stir something deeper.
For me, Vietnam was both — a place where past and present live side by side, where culture, cuisine, and connection intertwine in the most unexpected ways.

Some journeys change how you see the world; Vietnam changed how I felt it. It invites you to pause and truly be present — to notice the rhythm of scooters weaving through Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the scent of lemongrass and rain, the laughter that rises even when the skies open.

From the French-colonial boulevards of Hanoi to the lantern-lit magic of Hoi An and the vibrant rhythm of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam revealed itself in layers — refined yet raw, elegant yet electric.

It’s a country that greets you with quiet grace and leaves you with stories you’ll tell for years.

Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi — Where History Whispers

Hanoi is a symphony of sound and motion. In the Old Quarter, there are no streetlights or stop signs — only an unspoken choreography of scooters, bicycles, and pedestrians. The first time I stepped off the curb, my instinct was to freeze, but locals urged me to just walk. Miraculously, the swarm of motorbikes flowed around us like water — chaotic, exhilarating, and oddly graceful.

Our day began in Independence Square, where history feels alive. We visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the late leader’s body is preserved, and the Presidential Palace, a mustard-yellow relic of French architecture that still houses government offices. Flags lined every street, marking eighty years of independence from France — a reminder of both struggle and pride.

Nearby, the Temple of Literature offered a quieter reverence. Founded nearly a thousand years ago and now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was Vietnam’s first university, dedicated to Confucius. Stone steles perched on carved turtles — symbols of wisdom and longevity — stood in elegant silence beneath the banyan trees.

From there, we continued to Hỏa Lò Prison, once known as Maison Centrale. Learning how Vietnamese revolutionaries were imprisoned under French rule was sobering. Decades later, the same complex held American POWs — a place heavy with both pain and resilience.

The tone shifted as we left the city center for a private knife-making workshop with a local artisan. My husband, Phillip, forged a blade by hand under the craftsman’s patient instruction — sparks flying as metal met steel. Watching him work, I felt the essence of Vietnamese artistry: precise, patient, deeply personal.

That evening, returning to the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi felt like stepping into another time. Staying in the Opera Wing — polished wood, crisp linens, and colonial elegance — was the perfect contrast to the city’s pulse. Dinner at Spices Garden, the hotel’s Vietnamese restaurant, was refined yet soulful, each dish a masterclass in balance and flavor.

The next morning, we strolled around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, where locals practice tai chi at sunrise, and wandered to Train Street, where cafés perch beside the tracks and laughter rises as travelers sip coffee while a train barrels past.

When weather canceled our Ha Long Bay cruise, we stayed longer — relocating to the Apricot Hotel, a modern boutique overlooking the lake. That time allowed us to unwind, visit L’Essence Spa for a luxurious hair wash and hot-stone massage, and cap our stay with The Quintessence of Tonkin, an outdoor performance of music and light that brought Vietnam’s spirit to life beneath the stars.

Knife Making

Hoi An — Craft, Cuisine, and Connection

In central Vietnam, the pace softened. La Siesta Hoi An Resort & Spa became our home for four nights — first in the Classic Wing, then upgraded to an Executive Suite in the Club Wing with sweeping views of the infinity pool and rice terraces. The resort’s serenity perfectly balanced the energy beyond its gates.

Our first full day began at a bustling local market with our chef, weaving between stalls piled high with herbs, chilies, fresh fish, and tropical fruit. It was a lively glimpse of daily life — bartering with vendors, sampling produce, and choosing ingredients for our class.

From there, we glided through the Cẩm Thanh Coconut Jungle in bamboo basket boats. Palm fronds brushed our shoulders as fishermen sang and spun their boats in circles. Phillip even tried catching crabs with a woven trap, laughing with the locals as they cheered him on.

At the Hội An Tropical Cooking Class, we turned those morning finds into a feast — papaya salad, spring rolls, sizzling Vietnamese pancakes, braised chicken in clay pot, and a caramel-passion-fruit dessert that still makes my mouth water.

Cẩm Thanh Coconut Jungle

The next day was devoted to artistry. We began at a lantern workshop in a local woman’s home, stretching silk across bamboo frames as incense curled through the air — meditative and magical. Afterward, we joined the Wood Carving Art Workshop at Làng Cùi Lũ – Driftwood Village, carving small keepsakes alongside artisans who spoke more through their hands than words. We’re definitely not artists and needed plenty of help, but what a gift it was to learn these crafts directly from the people who preserve them — and to bring home such meaningful souvenirs.

That afternoon’s walking food tour became a comedy of timing: torrential rain poured down, and our “walk” turned into a sprint between the car and restaurants. It was deemed too unsafe to stroll as planned, but it didn’t dampen the experience. We ended at a tiny café with iced coconut coffee — a questionable choice in a storm but too delicious to resist — and laughed as water swirled around our ankles.

When our flight was delayed by weather, we used the extra time to finally wander through Hoi An’s Old Town in daylight, seeing lanterns drying in shopfronts and locals going about their day. At last, we stood before the Japanese Bridge, that graceful symbol of connection between cultures and centuries.

lantern making workshop

Ho Chi Minh City — Energy, Elegance, and Emotion

Saigon greeted us with tropical heat and boundless energy. The hum of motorbikes, the scent of street food, and the gleam of skyscrapers all told the story of a city constantly reinventing itself. We spent our first two nights at The Myst Dong Khoi, a boutique hotel full of character and greenery, before moving to the sleek Sofitel Saigon Plaza, where floor-to-ceiling windows framed the skyline.

Saigon Skyline

On our first day, we explored on foot — visiting the Central Post Office, a French-era masterpiece, and pausing outside Notre Dame Cathedral, its red-brick façade wrapped in scaffolding for restoration. Even under construction, it was striking — a symbol of endurance and renewal.

The next morning, we journeyed into the Mekong Delta, joining two lovely British couples for a boat ride through narrow canals shaded by coconut palms. We stopped at a coconut candy workshop, sampled local tropical fruits, and listened to traditional Vietnamese songs — a glimpse into the Delta’s gentle rhythm of life.

Then, in true travel fashion, the skies opened. A torrential downpour forced an early retreat from Unicorn Island, and by the time we returned to the mainland, we were soaked but grinning. The laughter, the rain, the spontaneity — it all became part of the memory.

On my birthday, we explored the Cu Chi Tunnels, an experience that stirred something far deeper. Listening to our guide describe how soldiers lived and fought underground, I felt a profound connection to my father, who had served nearby as a combat medic during the war. He earned three Purple Hearts and multiple Bronze Stars for saving lives in these same fields. Standing above those tunnels, seeing the traps and scars of battle, was profoundly humbling — a moment that stitched the past and present together.

That afternoon, a coffee workshop at Ca Phe Pham lightened the mood. We learned to prepare three of Vietnam’s signature coffees — egg, salted caramel, and yogurt — each one rich, indulgent, and uniquely Vietnamese.

To close out our time in Vietnam, we visited An’s Spa, where I indulged in a luxurious hair wash paired with a neck, shoulder, and foot massage. Using Google Translate to chat with the lovely women caring for me turned into laughter, stories, and connection — proof that kindness needs no common language. It was the perfect ending to an extraordinary journey.

Before leaving Saigon, I stopped by the elegant MGallery Hotel des Arts Saigon for a site visit and a leisurely buffet lunch — a final taste of Vietnamese hospitality that reminded me how seamlessly the country blends sophistication with soul.

Reflections on Luxury and Connection

As we packed our bags for the flight home, I found myself thinking about how Vietnam had surprised me at every turn. The grandeur of Hanoi’s landmarks, the artistry and warmth of Hoi An, the pulse and progress of Saigon — each revealed a different side of the same soulful country.

But what stood out most were the connections. The laughter shared over coconut coffee in a storm. The care of a spa therapist who spoke a different language but made me feel completely at home. The quiet pride of a craftsman guiding Phillip’s hands through centuries-old techniques.

Luxury, I realized, isn’t just about where you stay — though Vietnam offers that in abundance. It’s about how you feel in a place: the effortless blend of authenticity and comfort, of cultural immersion without compromise. It’s traveling with curiosity, gratitude, and the willingness to be changed.

Vietnam will stay with me — in the scent of coffee, the shimmer of lanterns, and the stories etched into my memory. It’s a destination that invites you not just to explore, but to connect.

Choosing an authentic African adventure in Kenya is intimidating. You want to work with the right operator, ensuring both authenticity and value. You want quality, but without overspending. Most importantly, you want an experience that doesn’t feel commercialized, and one where your tourism dollars positively impact the local community and environment. That’s why I chose to work with SKYIN to manage my first small group trip to east Africa. Their approach focuses on sustainable, culturally immersive travel, and they are incredibly easy to work with to curate meaningful, custom journeys.

I chose an amazing 13-day itinerary that checked all my boxes, and then gathered up my group of ten travelers, myself included, of all ages and from all over the U.S. — from our late 30s up to early 70s. Some joined the trip completely solo, knowing no one, and others joined with a friend or two, but we all left with new friendships and amazing memories.

It was all of our first times in Kenya, and we had some idea of what was in store, but not really what to expect. Upon our arrival, we were whisked off to our homestays, where we would spend five out of 13 nights of our trip living with local families. This was my vision for our journey — not just to witness Kenya’s beauty and wildlife, but to immerse ourselves in the everyday lives and walk away with greater understanding of the people who call this place home. We truly wanted an authentic African adventure in Kenya, not just something ordinary.

Day 1: Nairobi – a gentle arrival and homestays

Our first day was all about meeting our host families and beginning our immersion into Kenyan life. After arriving in Nairobi, each traveler was transferred to our respective homestays, where we would experience the warmth and hospitality of our local families.

It was a welcome worth its weight in gold!

Depending on the size of travelers’ groups, SKYIN offers the option of a homestay, which all my travelers opted for; but for travelers who would be more comfortable in a hotel, there is an alternative of a 4- or 5-star hotel. These are some important things to consider, especially when budgeting for as big of a trip as Africa.

My homestay mama, Mama Joy, was the most amazing cook with the biggest heart. Little did I know our time together (and her cooking!) would turn out to be one of the highlights of my authentic African adventure in Kenya.

Day 2: Orphaned elephants & giraffe tongues

Our first day of excursions! We began with a visit to the world-famous Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an organization in Nairobi committed to African elephant conservation and anti-poaching.

There, orphaned elephants and rhinos are cared for and eventually reintroduced into the wild. Watching these babies bottle-feed, roll in mud, and climb over each other was such a tender experience!

Later, we made our way to the Giraffe Centre, established in 1979 as a breeding center for the endangered Rothschild giraffe — a species once on the brink of extinction with fewer than 150 animals left in the wild.

There, we shared the joy of feeding them alfalfa pellets from our hands. Giraffe tongues are surprisingly soft! We all couldn’t stop smiling.

Later, we returned to our homestays. It wasn’t just the food (cooked with so much love) or the warm beds — it was the stories, the laughter around the table, and the way we were made to feel like part of their family.

“They were so welcoming, hospitable and just wonderful people that made our stay even more memorable,” said Klavdia, one of our group members.

Authentic African adventure in Kenya

Day 3: Maasai village – joy, connection & cultural immersion

Today was one of the highlights of the trip for all involved. We visited a real Maasai village, where we were adorned in checkered shúkàs and beadwork by the women, welcomed by children who were enthralled by our phones and cameras, and invited into homes to witness daily life.

The Maasai people are a semi-nomadic ethnic group native to southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, with a rich oral tradition passed down through generations. They’re known for their rituals and ceremonies, and their unique social structure.

The village chief and his step brothers (Maasai elders) spoke candidly about their traditions with us — the roles of men and women, polygamy, and pastoralism. There was no performance, just pride and openness.

We ended the day dancing together — a moment of shared joy and rhythm that transcended language. A little girl in a red dress took my hand and didn’t let go. She walked with me, giggled with me, and insisted on taking selfies — love emanating from her little soul. Words cannot describe the pure way we were all embraced and welcomed.

Dee Dee later said: “The highlight of the trip was spending a day with the Maasai tribe… sharing moments I’ll treasure forever.”

Day 4: Mombasa – coastal heat and Swahili culture

We boarded a plane to the coast, heading to Kenya’s second-largest city: Mombasa. The climate changed quickly to humid and hot!

We explored Fort Jesus, a historic Portuguese fort and museum, wandered through Old Town and all its beautiful Omani doors, toured local markets and bought spices and fresh fruits, and learned about the Arab-African history of this region.

Finally, we arrived at the beautiful 5-star Swahili Beach Resort to enjoy a well-earned rest, where we would spend the next three nights. This was one of my favorite hotel stays throughout our authentic African adventure in Kenya.

Day 5: A day of rest

We caught up on sleep, lounged on the beach, shopped at the nearby art galleries, and went for massages at the resort spa… taking care to steer clear of the monkeys!

Authentic African adventure in Kenya

Day 6: Indian Ocean blues

We boarded a traditional boat and traveled to Wasini Island, stopping to snorkel in the Indian Ocean and watch dolphins frolic along the way. Then, we enjoyed a traditional Swahili lunch on the island.

On our return, we visited the sobering Shimoni Slave Caves, which were used as holding pens for slaves before they were transported to the Americas, the Caribbean, and other parts of the world in the 19th century — a powerful and somber reflection on the horrors of the slave trade.

As Lisa put it, “This trip was deeply spiritual and transformative.”

Day 7: Mijikenda tribe – Drums, dance, and deep welcomes

From Mombasa, we visited another tribe deep in the Kaya Sacred Forest, this time the Mijikenda people — known for their rituals, music, and spirituality. We were greeted with song, drumming, and vibrant dancing, then invited to participate. This truly made us feel like we were on an authentic African adventure in Kenya as the cultural immersion brought us so much joy.

We observed a traditional wedding ceremony and a fortune telling, learned about herbal medicines from the land, and tried our hand at grinding dinner, again struck by the open-hearted joy of everyone we met.

Afterwards, we spent the night at the lovely 4-star Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort.

John shared, “Thank you again for making this such a wonderful experience I will always cherish.”

Day 8: Transition – back to Nairobi

We flew back to Nairobi and were taken back to our homestays, preparing ourselves for the next phase: safari! The shift in energy was palpable for the main event — we were all ready. I went to bed hoping that our authentic African adventure in Kenya would be completed by seeing the big 5!

Day 9: Lake Nakuru National Park – flamingos, rhinos & a tunnel of lions

Today, we drove to Lake Nakuru, known for its flamingos, expansive salt lake, dense forested areas, and rare Rothschild’s giraffes. The park is also home to both black and white rhinos — we saw both — as well as Cape buffalo, hyenas, zebras, and baboons.

We joked that our lodge’s name, the 4-star Sarova Lion Hill, was more than apt: lions were known to nap in the drainage tunnel under the road near the gate. Karen said, “The safari was very exciting… the guides managed the challenging driving with finesse and shared their vast knowledge.”

Authentic African adventure in Kenya

Day 10: Maasai Mara – the crown jewel

After breakfast, we made our way to the Maasai Mara National Park and checked into the 5-star Sarova Mara Camp. Maasai Mara is one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world, and for good reason; rolling plains, golden grass, dramatic skies — it was like a scene out of the Lion King! We saw elephants, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, and lions, including a male and a female “on honeymoon.”

I had borrowed a zoom lens for my time on this authentic African adventure in Kenya — and I’ll never go on a safari without one again. It was like having binoculars and a camera in one. Being able to zoom in made all the difference.

Day 11: A Finale in the sky

On our final full day on safari, the entire group opted for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Mara River. Floating above the world as the sun rose and spotting animals moving beneath us was pure majesty. A hot air balloon rise is a MUST on any authentic African adventure in Kenya. After landing, we were treated to a champagne bush breakfast with made-to-order eggs and all the fixins’, and traveled deep into the park chasing as much wildlife as possible.

I was asked why I decided to organize my group trip to Kenya in January (vs. during the Great Migration, which takes place in the summer), and here’s why:

  • More attainable pricing and availability (the Great Migration is PEAK!)
  • Less competition on the roads and in the parks for viewing (quieter, but equally rewarding!)
  • It’s baby season! Ideal for witnessing calves and other grazing offspring
  • It’s warm and sunny in January, and typically dry (meaning sparser vegetation)

And here’s the thing — there’s really no “bad” time to go on safari, as each season offers something different. It is, however, important to plan early for any African safari to ensure popular activities aren’t booked.

Linda called it “a stunning safari… beyond expectation.”

Authentic African adventure in Kenya

Day 12: Saying goodbye

Today, we returned to Nairobi for our final day. At our farewell lunch, everyone shared their favorite moments of the trip — and the standout experience echoed by everyone seemed to be a toss-up between the tribal visits, the homestays, and the safari!

As I told the group that night, it meant so much to me to see everyone embrace the adventure, leave their comfort zones, and to see a bond form that only a shared experience and memories can make.

Then, at each of our homestays, we enjoyed one last night together, full of fellowship, food, and friendship.

Day 13: Departures

Each of us were picked up and transported to the airport for our respective flight times — whether back home or to continue the adventure.

“Kenya impressed me so much. This trip was more than I could ever have dreamed of. Thank you for giving me literally… ‘A life changing trip!’” said Toni.

Reflections

For me, this group trip was so much more than a vacation. It was a reminder of how travel can open us, connect us, and teach us. Kenya gave us beauty, yes — but also wisdom, depth, and a new appreciation for what we had. We saw majestic creatures in the wild. We danced and drummed and shared meals. We navigated traffic and rough roads, lost luggage (mine — thank God for travel insurance!), and practiced patience for delays and changes. And we did it together.

My heart is full. Africa truly is the adventure of a lifetime.

To my travelers: thank you for your joy, your openness, and your presence. You made this journey. And to anyone reading who feels called to something like this… stay tuned. I’m already dreaming up the next one!

As Dee Dee summed it up beautifully: “This trip will be etched in my heart and soul forever. I highly recommend the SKYIN team for anyone looking for an authentic, enriching, immersive experience in beautiful Kenya.”

Would you join me if I hosted another group trip to Kenya? Or maybe you’d like to create a custom family or small group journey of your own? I’d love to help make it happen.

Let’s start planning your authentic African adventure in Kenya  Reach out when you’re ready to experience the wild, the soulful, the unforgettable magic of Kenya.

At Boutique Travel Advisors, we pride ourselves on working with trusted partners who know their destinations inside and out. That’s why we’re excited to share this firsthand account from one of our valued travel partners, Jack Mace, Strategic Director at Hummingbird Travel. Jack recently returned from an in-depth trip to the Seychelles, and his experience offers invaluable insights for anyone considering this stunning island destination. From resort highlights to hidden gems, this is a personal and professional take on why the Seychelles deserves a spot on your travel radar. Read on for Jack’s top five reasons to visit—and let your wanderlust begin!

Last week I returned from an unforgettable trip to the Seychelles where I spent ten days exploring this breathtakingly beautiful country. I have to admit, with my Maldives-tinted glasses on, I was a little dubious about how it would stack up against our most popular destination. But I was mightily impressed! From the moment I landed, the sheer natural beauty, the warm and welcoming people, and the diversity of experiences completely won me over.

The Seychelles is often spoken about in the same breath as other tropical island getaways, but it truly offers something different. It’s not just about luxury resorts and turquoise water (though it certainly has plenty of both). It’s about the feeling of complete escapism, the raw natural landscapes, and the genuine warmth of the Seychellois culture. This trip has completely shifted my perspective, and I now consider the Seychelles one of the top destinations for clients looking for a unique, luxurious, and enriching getaway.

As I reflected on my journey while flying home, I came up with five key reasons why the Seychelles should be at the top of your travel wish list:

1. Ultimate Island Hopping Destination

If your clients have the time, I highly recommend doing at least a twin-centre trip—or even better, a multi-island itinerary. The contrast between the lush, mountainous interiors and granite peaks of the main islands (Mahe, Praslin, La Digue) and the remote, untouched nature of the outer islands is extraordinary. They offer two completely different experiences that complement each other beautifully. The inter-island transfers by boat, plane, or even helicopter are part of the fun and make the adventure feel even more special.

2. World-Class Resorts

Six Senses, Four Seasons, Cheval Blanc, Waldorf Astoria… need I say more? The Seychelles is home to some of the most exceptional resorts in the world, each offering its own unique sense of place. Whether you’re seeking barefoot luxury, sleek sophistication, or something more intimate and boutique, there’s a property to match. The service is top-tier, the villas are stunning, and the food—oh, the food!—is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. I’ve shared more detailed thoughts on the properties I stayed at below, so keep reading!

3. Diverse Experiences

One of the biggest surprises of my trip was just how much there is to do. The Seychelles isn’t just for lounging on the beach (though that’s certainly a tempting option). Think lush rainforest hikes, visits to colonial landmarks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites, snorkeling and diving in crystal-clear waters, surfing, cycling through quaint island villages, rum distillery tours, private yacht charters, and world-class deep-sea fishing. For active travelers, adventure seekers, and culture lovers alike, there’s no shortage of options. We’ve compiled a document with a full list of experiences—reach out if you’d like a copy!

4. Unique Wildlife & Sealife

The Seychelles is a paradise for nature lovers. From spotting Aldabra giant tortoises lumbering through the forests to watching vibrant fish and manta rays glide through coral reefs, the biodiversity here is astounding. On land, you’ll find rare bird species like the Seychelles black parrot, while underwater is a kaleidoscope of marine life, including turtles, whale sharks, and colorful coral gardens. Conservation is a big part of the story here too, with several islands dedicated to eco-tourism and sustainability.

5. Local Culture & Food

What really stood out to me was the rich cultural tapestry of the Seychelles—a unique blend of African, French, and Indian influences. This mix is reflected in everything from the local moutya music to the architecture and, of course, the cuisine. Creole food is full of bold flavors, with fresh seafood, tropical fruits, aromatic spices, and fragrant curries. Every meal was a delicious adventure, and I’d encourage visitors to dine outside the resorts when possible for a more authentic taste of island life.

Property Highlights – My Personal Takeaways

Waldorf Astoria Platte Island: A stunning new private island escape. The villas are expansive and beautifully designed, the facilities are state-of-the-art, and the spa is an absolute sanctuary. A perfect retreat for those looking for ultimate seclusion and luxury.

Four Seasons Mahe: An oldie but a goodie! This resort still delivers. Probably the best beach I visited on the trip—white sand, turquoise waters, and excellent service. The hilltop villas offer jaw-dropping views, and the food was consistently excellent.

Four Seasons Desroches: Wow, wow, wow! This was hands-down one of my favorite stops. The island itself is magical, with so much to explore. The staff went above and beyond, and the surfing break here is fantastic for active travelers.

Mango House: A stylish and sophisticated option, perfect for those with a slightly lower budget but who still want a luxurious and well-located base. Great dining and a cool, laid-back vibe.

Cheval Blanc Seychelles: A showstopper. Ultra-luxurious, with exquisite dining, palatial villas, a phenomenal kids club, and design that blends beautifully into the surrounding landscape. This property is going to be a game-changer in the region.

Whether it’s a post-safari wind-down, a twin-centre adventure with the UAE, or a standalone luxury island getaway, we are here to help you craft the perfect Seychelles escape. Our expert team has firsthand knowledge of the destination, access to amazing rates and exclusive perks, and trusted local partners to ensure your clients have an unforgettable experience from start to finish.

If the Seychelles wasn’t on your radar before… it absolutely should be now. Let’s make it happen!

Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, The Disney Treasure, is nothing short of a luxurious, magical, and exhilarating oasis. I had the incredible opportunity to be among the first guests on board, sailing on the Disney Treasure’s Maiden Voyage from December 21st to December 28th, 2024. As a seasoned Disney cruiser—and no stranger to Maiden Voyages—I thought I had seen it all. But Disney Cruise Line still managed to surprise and amaze me with brand-new experiences.

The Eastern Caribbean never loses its charm, with its vibrant culture, breathtaking beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Some of my all-time favorite ports are scattered throughout this region, and no matter how many times I visit, it always feels like paradise.

The Porthole Stateroom

The Porthole Stateroom

The staterooms aboard the Disney Treasure are beautifully themed after beloved Disney classics, including Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Encanto, Up, Finding Nemo, Luca, and even a suite inspired by EPCOT. My dad and I stayed in a porthole stateroom, which, by luck, turned out to be an accessible room, giving us plenty of extra space to spread out and relax—a welcome bonus!

Sail Away Party on Deck. Sailing Away from Port Canaveral

Sail Away Party on Deck. Sailing Away from Port Canaveral

As a self-proclaimed Disney fanatic, I couldn’t wait to explore all the incredible venues around the ship. From uniquely themed bars and lounges to immersive restaurants, The Disney Treasure is packed with Disney magic at every turn. I was especially eager to see how the theming, design, and signature Disney details would come to life—and let me tell you, they did not disappoint!

But what truly makes Disney cruises stand out is how perfect they are for families or better yet a father/daughter vacation. With world-class entertainment, interactive kids’ clubs, character meet-and-greets, and adult-only retreats, there’s something for every age to enjoy. For my dad and me, the Disney experience was a nostalgic journey filled with youthful charm and cherished memories. It is no wonder Disney Cruise Lines is a top choice when it comes to BTA’s best cruise-lines that families that both adults and children will love.

The Grand Lobby Decorated for Christmas and My Dad and I With the Aladin and Jasmine Statue

The Grand Lobby Decorated for Christmas and My Dad and I With the Aladin and Jasmine Statue

Sailing on a Disney cruise over Christmas felt like stepping into a holiday wonderland at sea. From the moment I stepped onboard, I was surrounded by twinkling lights, festive garlands, and towering Christmas trees, instantly transporting me back to the magic of Christmas as a little kid. Every corner of the ship was decked out in dazzling holiday décor, creating the most joyful and heartwarming atmosphere. I loved watching Santa and my favorite Disney characters dressed in their holiday best, catching snowflakes as they drifted through the atrium, and cozying up with hot cocoa under the stars for a Christmas movie on deck. Every detail made the holiday feel extra special, and with no stress or planning on my end, I could simply soak up the pure magic of the season—just like I did when I was a kid!

The Haunted Mansion Parlor. The beverage is called Regions Beyond

The Haunted Mansion Parlor. The beverage is called Regions Beyond

Lounges

Stepping into The Haunted Mansion Parlor felt like being whisked straight into the iconic attraction. Every detail—from the eerie ambiance to the carefully crafted furniture—was nearly identical to what you’d find in the ride. It was an immersive, spine-tingling experience that perfectly captured the essence of the Haunted Mansion.

With numerous sports events happening throughout our cruise, the best spot to catch the action was Periscope Pub—a bar themed after 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This space truly transports you into a submarine, complete with porthole windows, nautical details, and an immersive deep-sea ambiance… just with the added bonus of buffalo wings!

Periscope Pub

Periscope Pub

Sarabi is the go-to spot for nighttime entertainment, hosting events like Match Your Mate and the brand-new Indiana Jones: An Interactive Story game show. After 10:00 PM, the venue becomes 18+, creating a more exclusive atmosphere with a little extra freedom to let loose.

The space is Lion King-themed and spans two floors, but if you want to be in the heart of the action—whether it’s interacting during game shows or hitting the dance floor for Silent DJ—you’ll want to be on the lower level. Of course, no night out is complete without a great drink, and Sarabi’s bar delivers with a menu inspired by The Lion King and the African savanna, featuring both mocktails and cocktails with creative, themed flavors.

First Floor of Sarabi and the Stage

First Floor of Sarabi and the Stage

Just outside Sarabi, you’ll find the Walt Disney Theatre, home to Broadway-caliber productions on the high seas! One of the biggest highlights aboard The Disney Treasure was the brand-new stage adaptation of Moana—a breathtaking, incredible production that was well worth the wait.

Another favorite of mine, Beauty and the Beast, is also performed on this ship. Disney Cruise Line has put its own unique spin on the classic tale with fresh dialogue, creative props, and magical stage effects. But my absolute favorite moment? The final bows, when they bring a young guest on stage to bow as Chip—a heartwarming touch that makes the experience even more special.

Spa

Senses Spa, Outdoor Hot Tub, Private Couples Massage Hot Tub and Massage room

Senses Spa, Outdoor Hot Tub, Private Couples Massage Hot Tub and Massage room

Unfortunately, I ran out of time to squeeze in a massage on this sailing, but I did get the chance to tour the Senses Spa—and wow, was it worth it! Spanning half of Deck 5 and conveniently located next to the gym, the spa is a quiet, luxurious retreat that instantly made me excited to return on a future cruise to fully unwind.

Having experienced Disney Cruise Line massages before, I can confidently say they are nothing short of amazing. Every time, I leave feeling refreshed, relaxed, and completely at peace—and after seeing this stunning spa, I can’t wait to come back and indulge in that experience all over again.

Dining

Disney Cruise Line takes a unique approach to dining compared to other cruise lines. Instead of a single, massive main dining room, Disney features three distinct restaurants, which guests rotate through with their dining team in a set order throughout the voyage. Typically, the lineup includes one upscale restaurant, one with a live show, and one with an interactive element. And if you’re on a longer voyage, don’t worry—while you may revisit the same restaurant, the menu changes to keep things fresh.

Aboard The Disney Treasure, the three main dining restaurants are 1923, Plaza de Coco, and Worlds of Marvel—each offering its own immersive theme, incredible atmosphere, and, of course, delicious food.

Our dining rotation included:

  • Night 1: 1923
  • Night 2: Marvel
  • Night 3: Coco
  • Night 4: 1923 (Christmas Eve)
  • Night 5: 1923 (Christmas)
  • Night 6: Marvel
  • Night 7: Coco
Ofrenda for Mama Coco at Plaza Del Coco, Mariachi Band, and Chorizo Street Croquettes

Ofrenda for Mama Coco at Plaza Del Coco, Mariachi Band, and Chorizo Street Croquettes

Plaza de Coco quickly became one of my favorite restaurants across the entire Disney Cruise Line fleet. Unlike the other dining venues, this is the only restaurant that serves chips and salsa instead of bread—a detail I absolutely loved.

The menu was thoughtfully curated, featuring authentic Mexican flavors that felt true to the culture and cuisine. And while the food was incredible, the dinner show made the experience even more special. It was heartfelt, beautifully executed, and full of emotion, capturing the essence of familial love in a way that truly resonated.

Spiderman and me at Worlds of Marvel, The first of two shows at World’s of Marvel, and a Steamed Bao Buns

Spiderman and me at Worlds of Marvel, The first of two shows at World’s of Marvel, and a Steamed Bao Buns

Worlds of Marvel is the same restaurant concept from the Disney Wish, which I also had the pleasure of experiencing on its Maiden Voyage. However, the show on The Disney Treasure took the experience to a whole new level—it truly blew me away.

One of my all-time favorite Disney park attractions is Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and a big part of my love for it comes from the upbeat, lighthearted music that creates such a fun vibe. The dinner show at Worlds of Marvel perfectly captured that same playful, energetic atmosphere, making it a thrilling and unforgettable dining experience.

Christmas Desert at 1923, The Place Setting, and Goofy Outside on Christmas Eve

Christmas Desert at 1923, The Place Setting, and Goofy Outside on Christmas Eve

1923 is another returning restaurant from the Disney Wish, serving as the elevated, upscale dining option aboard the Disney Treasure. Unlike the other main dining venues, there’s no dinner show—instead, the experience is all about soaking in the elegant ambiance and appreciating the subtle, thoughtfully designed décor.

My dad and I had both Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner in 1923, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The refined atmosphere, paired with an incredible menu, made for a memorable and special holiday experience.

Palo Steakhouse Coffee and Champagne, and The Famous Rose at Palo Steakhouse

Palo Steakhouse Coffee and Champagne, and The Famous Rose at Palo Steakhouse

Palo Steakhouse is, without a doubt, one of my favorite fine dining restaurants on the planet. Everything about it—the impeccable service, the sophisticated ambiance, and the elevated culinary experience—makes it truly special. Since Palo is 18+, it offers a more refined and intimate dining atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely, indulgent meal.

One thing I’ve always admired is the dedication and expertise of the Palo team. I’ve spoken with several servers, and to earn a spot at Palo, they must be among the best of the best from the main dining rooms—a distinction that’s not easily achieved. Their knowledge of the menu, wine pairings, and overall dining experience is astonishing. I’ve never had anything less than exceptional service at Palo, and there’s even one server, Silvio, whom I’ve had the pleasure of seeing on multiple cruises.

One of the ongoing debates between my dad and me is Palo Brunch vs. Palo Dinner—and honestly, there’s no wrong answer. Palo Brunch offers the best of both worlds, with a mix of breakfast and lunch favorites, plus a complimentary mimosa to start. I always struggle with whether to go for breakfast or lunch, but at Palo Brunch, I don’t have to choose—I can have both, enjoying the highest-quality omelet or the most incredible chicken parmesan on the seven seas.

That said, Palo Dinner has one major advantage: the legendary chocolate soufflé. While Palo is known for its outstanding steaks, the soufflé is the true star—but unfortunately, it’s not available during brunch. So, there’s always a little give and take when deciding between the two.

On The Disney Wish and The Disney Treasure, the perfect pre-dinner stop is The Rose, a stunning, Beauty and the Beast-themed bar that sets the mood for a magical evening. Whether brunch or dinner, every visit to Palo is an unforgettable experience.

The Quiet Cove while at Port

The Quiet Cove while at Port

The Ports

The Quiet Cove is a serene, adults-only escape located on Deck 13 aft, offering a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the ship. This tranquil space features a hot tub, an infinity pool, a bar, and a café stocked with delectable pastries—the ideal setup for ultimate relaxation.

The views from the infinity pool and water baths are nothing short of breathtaking. Whether you’re gazing out at the endless ocean or watching the ship’s wake trail behind, the scenery is mesmerizing. And when docked in port, the almost 360-degree views of the surrounding landscapes—especially in the lush Eastern Caribbean—make for an unforgettable experience.

The itinerary we sailed is specifically one of my favorites, including:

  • Tortolla, British VI
  • St. Thomas, USVI
  • Castaway Cay (Disney’s Private Island)
Jost Van Dyke Beach, Tortola

Jost Van Dyke Beach, Tortola

My dad and I made sure to hit all the must-see attractions in both St. Thomas and Tortola, making the most of our time in these beautiful ports.

On Christmas Eve day, we docked in Tortola and set off on a Disney Cruise Line excursion to the stunning Jost Van Dyke Beach, famous for its Painkiller cocktail—a must-try for visitors! As if the crystal-clear waters and soft sand weren’t enough, adorable goats were wandering around, which honestly made my entire Christmas Eve.

This excursion quickly became one of my favorites. The weather was perfect, the water was the ideal temperature for swimming, and the waves were just right—gentle enough to relax in, but still fun to play around in. It was the perfect way to spend a holiday at sea!

Maegan’s Bay, St. Thomas

Maegan’s Bay, St. Thomas

On Christmas Day, we docked in the beautiful St. Thomas, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. For the day’s adventure, we joined a Disney Cruise Line excursion to Magens Bay, a must-visit beach known for its breathtaking scenery and tranquil waters.

Compared to Jost Van Dyke, Magens Bay was more crowded, and the water was noticeably calmer, but the atmosphere was still incredible. My dad and I found the perfect shady spot, settled into our beach chairs, and simply relaxed, soaking in the beauty of the island.

Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island

Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island

After 29 Disney Cruises, I’m no stranger to Castaway Cay—Disney’s private island. I grew up visiting this slice of paradise, and somehow, it never gets old. Whether it’s riding a banana boat, taking a glass-bottom boat tour, parasailing, kayaking, water tricycling, or snorkeling, there’s always something fun to do. Personally, my favorite activity is snorkeling. In the designated snorkeling area, there are sunken Disney artifacts, which make the experience that much more thrilling and unique.

The food on the island is also spectacular—something both my dad and I look forward to every time we visit. There’s a grill serving up a variety of meats, pasta salads, and fresh fruit. And don’t forget the self-serve soft-serve machine, which we frequent without fail.

But what I’ve come to love most in recent years is Serenity Bay, the adults-only area of the island. It’s where you’ll find some of the best cabanas, including a few massage cabanas. On past trips, we’ve had the luxury of booking a cabana, and let me tell you, it’s an experience all on its own.

Overall, The Disney Treasure exceeded my already high expectations, and I can’t wait to sail on it again. That said, I do find myself missing the more classic, nautical-themed aesthetic of the first four Disney ships—Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy—which had a slightly less overtly Disney-inspired design. But that’s the beauty of Disney Cruise Line—there’s truly a ship for every style and preference, ensuring that every guest finds the perfect fit for their voyage.

After so many Disney Cruises, it’s safe to say that I know this fleet inside and out. If you’re dreaming of your next magical voyage, I’d love to help you plan it—offering insider tips and firsthand insights to make your experience unforgettable.
