Burnout is no longer a warning sign. It is a full-blown crisis. Recent reporting estimates that 66% of U.S. workers felt burned out in 2025, an all-time high, with overload still rising (Forbes). For companies, the stakes are steep. Lost productivity, turnover, health-care claims, and disengagement can total thousands of dollars per employee each year and more than five million annually for a 1,000-person firm (Forbes). Deloitte likewise found that 77% of employees have experienced burnout at their current job, many more than once (Deloitte).

EAST COAST SANCTUARIES FOR THE OVERWORKED

Canyon Ranch, Lenox, Massachusetts

Canyon Ranch, Lenox, Massachusetts

In the Berkshires, this legend blends fitness and nutrition consultations with indulgent spa treatments and four-season outdoor time

In the Berkshires, this 120-acre property has operated as a comprehensive wellness destination since 1989. The model here is medical-grade assessment paired with immediate application: biometric screenings, nutrition consultations with registered dietitians, and movement prescriptions from exercise physiologists who understand desk-bound bodies.

The spa menu includes over 100 services, but the real value is in the integrative approach. You might pair a deep-tissue session with a consultation on sleep architecture, or follow a guided forest walk with a workshop on cognitive load management. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing across groomed trails; summer opens the lake for kayaking and paddleboarding. Four-season outdoor access matters when your daily life offers none.

Accommodations range from classic inn rooms to private cottages. Meals are included, and the culinary team builds menus around anti-inflammatory principles without sacrificing flavor or satisfaction. This is not a detox retreat. It is a recalibration program for people who need to return to high-demand roles with better operating systems.

The Lodge at Woodloch, Pennsylvania

The Lodge at Woodloch, Pennsylvania

About 95 miles from New York City, this all-inclusive retreat offers hydromassage pools, MindBody classes, creative arts workshops, and chef-driven dining.

Ninety-five miles from New York City, this all-inclusive property sits on 500 forested acres with a private lake. The appeal for executives is the contained environment: no decisions about where to eat, what to book, or how to spend your time. Everything is included, and the schedule is designed to remove friction.

Hydromassage pools use targeted water pressure for muscle recovery. MindBody classes cover breathwork, meditation, and somatic techniques that translate to boardrooms and long flights. Creative arts workshops (ceramics, painting, journaling) offer a cognitive shift that pure relaxation often cannot provide. When your work involves constant problem-solving, making something with your hands rewires the brain temporarily.

Chef-driven dining focuses on whole foods, omega-3-rich proteins, and complex carbohydrates that stabilize energy. Rooms are quiet, simply appointed, and designed for sleep. No televisions. No work calls bleeding into downtime. The Lodge succeeds because it removes the need to self-regulate while teaching you how to do exactly that once you leave.

WEST COAST ESCAPES FOR DECISION FATIGUE

Canyon Ranch Woodside, California

Canyon Ranch Woodside, California

Tucked into redwoods, this intimate property has glass-walled treehouses, private yoga, and expert workshops.

This 16-acre property in the Bay Area redwoods is Canyon Ranch’s most intimate offering. Treehouses with floor-to-ceiling glass bring the forest inside. Maximum capacity is 38 guests, which means access to practitioners is immediate and programming feels bespoke.

The focus here is executive retreat: private yoga sessions, one-on-one workshops with behavioral psychologists, and nutrition planning for people managing complex travel schedules and client dinners. The organic garden supplies the kitchen, and meals are served family-style to encourage connection without forced socialization.

Outdoor activity includes guided hikes through old-growth forest, mountain biking on fire roads, and restorative movement classes held on outdoor decks. Leaders who spend their days in decision fatigue come here for the kind of quiet that allows bigger thinking to surface. No agenda. No deliverables. Just space to think clearly again.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, California

One of the few U.S. resorts with on-site natural mineral hot springs, offering KUR rituals at Willow Stream Spa, private golf access, and wine country immersion.

One of only a handful of U.S. resorts with natural thermal mineral hot springs on site. The water, sourced from an underground aquifer, reaches 135 degrees Fahrenheit and contains minerals that support muscle recovery and circulation. Willow Stream Spa offers KUR rituals (a European hydrotherapy tradition) that combine thermal bathing with massage, body treatments, and chromotherapy.

The property sits in Sonoma wine country, which means access to world-class vineyards, farm-to-table dining, and Michelin-level restaurants within a ten-minute drive. The concierge arranges private tastings and winery tours, allowing you to blend rest with cultural engagement. The 18-hole championship golf course adjacent to the property offers another way to decompress.

Rooms feature soaking tubs, fireplaces, and private patios. Service is polished but not intrusive. You can participate in group fitness classes, book private training sessions, or spend entire days cycling between thermal pools and treatment rooms. This is wellness for people who want sophistication alongside restoration.

The Ranch Malibu, California

The Ranch Malibu, California

Results-driven to the core: early hikes, yoga, plant-based cuisine, and daily massage.

Results-driven to the core. Early morning hikes range from four to eight hours depending on your fitness level and program tier. Daily yoga, plant-based meals in precise portions, and one hour of massage each afternoon. No caffeine. No alcohol. No phones during the day.

The program is structured and non-negotiable. You wake at 5:30 a.m., hike by 6:00 a.m., return for breakfast, attend fitness or yoga classes, eat lunch, receive bodywork, then participate in evening stretching or meditation. Dinner is communal. Lights out by 9:00 p.m.

Guests leave lighter, clearer, and sharper. The ROI is measurable: improved cardiovascular markers, reduced inflammation, better sleep patterns, and mental clarity that persists for weeks. This is not for everyone. It is for people who respond to structure, who want accountability, and who need to break patterns that medication and willpower alone have not addressed.

SOUTHWESTERN ESCAPES BUILT FOR TRANSFORMATION

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Photo Courtesy of Canyon Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

A global standard in integrative wellness for decades, offering fully personalized programs for mind, body, and spirit with leading experts.

A global standard in integrative wellness for more than four decades. The Tucson property spans 150 acres in the Sonoran Desert foothills with views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. What differentiates this location is depth of expertise: physicians, acupuncturists, behavioral health specialists, physical therapists, and spiritual counselors all under one roof.

You build a fully personalized program. Consultations might include metabolic testing, hormone panels, sleep studies, or stress response assessments. Practitioners collaborate across disciplines, so your nutritionist and your therapist are reviewing the same data and coordinating recommendations.

Outdoor programming includes desert hikes, mountain biking, tennis, and guided meditation walks. The spa offers more than 40 types of massage and bodywork. Fitness classes range from aqua jogging to kickboxing to Pilates reformer sessions. Accommodations include casitas with private patios and desert gardens.

Meals are designed around your goals. If you are addressing insulin resistance, your plate reflects that. If you are managing autoimmune flare-ups, the kitchen adjusts accordingly. This is an executive retreat built entirely around you, with the clinical infrastructure to support measurable change.

Mii amo, Sedona, Arizona

In Boynton Canyon, 23 casitas host multi-night journeys that feel more spiritual than standard spa.

In Boynton Canyon, 23 casitas host multi-night journeys that feel more spiritual than standard spa. The property is designed around the concept of transformation rather than pampering. You select a journey theme (stress relief, mindfulness, personal growth, outdoor adventure) and your daily schedule builds from there.

Treatments draw from Native American traditions, Eastern medicine, and evidence-based bodywork. You might begin with a crystal therapy session, follow it with a guided meditation in the canyon, then close the day with deep-tissue work focused on releasing held tension. The approach is holistic without being dogmatic.

Privacy is paramount. Casitas are separated by native landscaping. Meals are served in a communal dining room, but conversation is optional. Many guests come here alone, seeking rare quiet away from roles that demand constant availability. The red rock canyon setting amplifies the sense of remove. You are unreachable here, by design.

BOOK WITH VIP AMENITIES

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona

Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa, Tucson, Arizona

Equine experiences, mindfulness workshops, and challenge courses sit alongside a renowned spa.

Equine experiences form the core of Miraval’s approach to presence and self-awareness. Horses respond to human energy in real time, offering immediate feedback on how you show up. For leaders accustomed to controlling outcomes, working with a 1,200-pound animal that cannot be managed through force is clarifying.

Beyond equine therapy, the property offers mindfulness workshops, aerial yoga, climbing walls, zip lines, and a desert labyrinth for walking meditation. The spa is excellent (over 30,000 square feet), but the real work happens in the experiential programming. Clarity often arrives in surprising ways, particularly when you step outside familiar modes of problem-solving.

Accommodations include desert-view rooms and private casitas. Meals are included and designed to support sustained energy rather than restriction. The resort operates on an all-inclusive model, removing transactional friction. You can participate as much or as little as you want. Many executives book five to seven nights to allow time for genuine recalibration.

SOUTHERN DESTINATIONS FOR SERIOUS RESTORATION

Lake Austin Spa Resort, Texas

Lake Austin Spa Resort, Texas

Only 40 rooms on a serene lake, with paddleboard yoga, chef-led classes, kayaking, and a relaxed, intentional pace.

Only 40 rooms on 19 acres along Lake Austin. The intimacy of the property allows for highly personalized programming. You work with a wellness concierge to design your days: spa treatments, fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or simply reading by the water.

Paddleboard yoga takes place on the lake at sunrise. Chef-led classes teach you how to prepare nutrient-dense meals that fit into your actual life, not an aspirational version of it. The culinary team accommodates dietary needs without making it feel like a limitation.

Rooms are comfortable but not opulent. The focus is on the program, not the fixtures. Service is warm and attentive without hovering. This is a Condé Nast Traveler favorite because it delivers measurable restoration without pretension. You leave with tools, not just memories of being pampered.

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach

Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach

Mediterranean-style oceanfront haven with unobstructed beach access, three pools, and standout dining.

Mediterranean-style oceanfront property with unobstructed Atlantic views, three oceanfront pools, and four on-site restaurants. The Forbes Five-Star hotel and spa cater to guests who want luxury alongside wellness, not luxury instead of it.

The 20,000-square-foot ESPA offers thalassotherapy, Mediterranean-inspired treatments, and Finnish saunas with ocean views. You can book deep-tissue sessions, Ayurvedic treatments, or results-focused facials. Fitness programming includes beach yoga, aqua aerobics, and personal training.

The property is family-friendly, with a marine biology program for children that includes snorkeling and ocean conservation education. For executives traveling with family, this solves the problem of wellness travel that isolates you from the people you are trying to spend more time with. You can restore while your children engage in meaningful programming steps away.

Dining includes Il Mulino New York, Costa Grill, and AQ Chop House. Rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, oversized balconies, and Italian linens. This is wellness for people who want sophistication, not simplicity.

The Takeaway for Professionals

Wellness is not a luxury. It is a strategic reset that improves performance, leadership, and resilience. Whether you choose the structure of The Ranch Malibu, the integrative programs at Canyon Ranch, or lakeside calm at Lake Austin, the outcome is similar. You return sharper, stronger, and more inspired.

If you are serious about leveling up your career, investing in your well-being is your next power move.

Three Ways to Make Your Wellness Retreat Count

  1. Unplug completely
Turn off notifications, set an out-of-office message, and give yourself permission to disconnect. Real rest requires psychological detachment from work.

  2. Go beyond the spa menu
Book at least one guided workshop or outdoor activity. Paddleboard yoga, equine therapy, or a mindfulness session can spark breakthroughs the massage table never will.

  3. Bring one practice home
Choose one ritual to keep. Morning meditation, mindful meals, or a daily walking meeting. Small, consistent shifts build long-term resilience.

How to book for VIP value

Le Bristol Paris Review

All photos courtesy of Le Bristol or personally taken.

My taxi pulled up on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, and before I could reach for the door handle, a doorman in a midnight-blue tailcoat had already opened it and was lifting my bag from the trunk. I walked through the revolving door into a lobby that felt warm rather than imposing. Antique furniture sat beside fresh floral arrangements that were changed daily, and the polished oak floors reflected afternoon light without looking overly staged.

This was not a lobby designed to intimidate you with its grandeur. It was designed to make you feel like you had arrived somewhere that knows exactly what it is doing. I was lucky enough to be upgraded to a beautiful suite with city views and two balconies. The room had the kind of space you do not find in most Paris hotels, with high ceilings and windows that opened fully to let in fresh air.

This is a hotel for people who want genuine character instead of whatever trend is currently popular on Instagram, and who prefer service that notices what you need before you have to request it. Le Bristol is expensive. But after spending time here, the price makes sense in a way that luxury hotel pricing often does not.

History & Location: A Legacy Etched in Parisian Stone

Le-Bristol- Paris Virtuoso Welcome Amenity

My beautiful welcome amenity, which all of our travelers receive when booking in our Luxury Travel Club

To truly understand Le Bristol is to delve into its rich lineage. Opened in 1925, this historic establishment is more than just a luxury hotel; it’s a “Palace Hotel”. This designation is bestowed by the French government to a select few hotels that exemplify extraordinary luxury, historical significance, and unparalleled service. This prestigious title elevates them beyond five-star status, recognizing their unique contributions to French tourism.

Le Bristol, now a crown jewel within the prestigious Oetker Collection, has meticulously preserved its heritage while continually evolving to meet contemporary standards. Decades of thoughtful refreshment have maintained its exquisite antiques and original parquet flooring, all while integrating discreet, cutting-edge comforts behind the scenes.

One of Le Bristol’s most endearing and perhaps whimsical features is its resident feline, Socrate, the regal Burmese cats who famously graces the lobby, offering quiet companionship and a unique charm found nowhere else. And for the epicurean traveler, Le Bristol houses Epicure, Chef Eric Frechon’s three-Michelin-star culinary temple, a destination in itself.

The hotel’s location is nestled on the prestigious Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré within the sophisticated 8th arrondissement. This address places you at the epicenter of Parisian luxury. It is flanked by world-renowned couture houses and just a few moments away from the majestic Élysée Palace. The neighborhood itself is a meticulously polished, discreetly patrolled, and unmistakably Parisian enclave, exuding an air of understated glamour.

Getting There:
From Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport 45–60 minutes by car

From Orly Airport  30–45 minute journey.

For exploring the city, the Miromesnil and Saint-Philippe-du-Roule metro stations are conveniently close, offering easy access to Paris’s extensive public transport network.

Within Walking Distance:
Step out and immerse yourself in the heart of Paris. The iconic Place de la Madeleine, the grand Place de la Concorde, the magnificent Grand Palais, and the serene Parc Monceau. Of course, the immediate vicinity offers endless delights, with high-end boutiques, charming cafés, and art galleries lining Rue Saint-Honoré, inviting you to wander and discover.

At a Glance: The Essence of Le Bristol

Le-Bristol- Paris Suite
Category: Palace Hotel

Vibe: Timeless Parisian classicism with a warm, inviting soul.

Best For: Discerning travelers seeking authentic luxury, families desiring exceptional service, couples on a romantic getaway, and cultural aficionados. Its thoughtful amenities also make it surprisingly perfect for families with young children and teens, while its elegant bars appeal to those seeking a sophisticated Parisian evening.

Standout Feature: The seamless blend of extraordinary, anticipatory service; the unwavering adherence to true “palace hotel” standards; and an absolutely unbeatable location that anchors you in the heart of Paris.

VIP Perks with Boutique Travel Adivosrs: Booking through BTA unlocks exclusive benefits, including daily breakfast, a $100 hotel credit to enhance your stay, a complimentary room upgrade upon arrival (subject to availability), and flexible early check-in and late check-out options, ensuring a truly pampered experience.

Rooms & Suites: A Spacious City Sanctuary

Le-Bristol- Paris Bathroom

In a city where space is a premium, Le Bristol’s rooms and suites are remarkably generous. They boast soaring high ceilings, expansive windows that invite the Parisian light, and elegant chevron parquet flooring. The décor embraces classic French prints in soothing pastel palettes, creating an atmosphere of refined tranquility. Marble-clad bathrooms are equally spacious, often featuring both deep soaking tubs and separate showers. Soundproofing is exceptional, ensuring a peaceful retreat from the city’s gentle hum. For breathtaking city panoramas, I highly recommend suites facing the city with Eiffel Tower views and balconies.

It’s worth noting an important nuance: Le Bristol isn’t a property saturated with cutting-edge gadgets. Instead, it prioritizes exquisite craftsmanship, timeless aesthetics, and unparalleled comfort over the latest technological novelties. This is a place where classic elegance reigns supreme.

My Personal Experience:
Room overall: 5/5 – A true sanctuary.
Bed comfort: 5/5 – Cloud-like perfection for restful nights.

Welcome amenity satisfaction: 5/5 – Thoughtful and exquisitely presented.
View quality: 5/5 – Whether in a courtyard or a city, each view tells a story.

Pro Tip: For the most enchanting experience, ask for a higher-floor, garden-facing room. These rooms are bathed in glorious golden light and offer an almost pin-drop silence that is rare in a bustling city. If you prefer the vibrant energy of city views, rest assured that the street-facing rooms are equipped with superb double glazing, ensuring your peace and quiet.

Dining & Drinks: A Culinary Journey in Paris

Le-Bristol- Paris Bar
Dining at Le Bristol is an experience in itself, ranging from Michelin-starred artistry to a cozy, classic brasserie ambiance.

Mornings at Le Bristol were relaxing and breakfast unfolded at a leisurely pace, while still efficient and attentive. Imagine silky omelets, prepared with care, served alongside incredibly rich butter. And the pastries! The viennoiserie was a dream, crisp and golden outside, then wonderfully soft inside.

For dinner, Epicure, Chef Eric Frechon’s renowned three-Michelin-star restaurant, is an absolute must-try. If you are fortunate enough to secure a reservation that is. It promises an unforgettable gastronomic journey. As an alternative, or simply for a change of pace, 114 Faubourg offers a vibrant brasserie experience. It has a lively atmosphere and delectable dishes, providing a delightful contrast to Epicure’s refined elegance.

The hotel bar, with its polished wood and gleaming brass, exudes classic sophistication. Here, skilled mixologists craft the perfect martini, alongside seasonal cocktails that lean towards elegant rather than overly experimental – perfectly complementing the hotel’s timeless charm.

My Culinary Highlights:
Breakfast quality: 5/5 – Consistently outstanding.
Visited venues: Epicure, 114 Faubourg, Le Bar du Bristol.

Best dish or drink: Without a doubt, Eric Frechon’s legendary stuffed macaroni with black truffle, artichoke, and foie gras from Epicure.
Bar or lounge overall: 5/5 – An ideal spot for a sophisticated apéritif or a nightcap.

Wellness, Pools & Grounds: Urban Oasis and Serene Retreat

Le-Bristol- Paris Pool
Le Bristol understands that true luxury extends beyond the exquisite interiors to encompass holistic well-being. The hotel’s spa, though I didn’t experience its services firsthand, is highly regarded as a sanctuary of calm. It blends results-driven treatments featuring prestigious brands like La Prairie with eco-conscious partners such as Tata Harper.

The fitness room, while compact, is remarkably well-appointed with modern Technogym equipment and bathed in natural light, making workouts invigorating.

However, the true marvel of Le Bristol’s wellness offerings must be its rooftop swimming pool. With its teak-decked surround, it evokes the luxurious feel of a yacht deck sailing high above the Parisian rooftops. Take a lap here, with panoramic views of the city as your backdrop.

Below, the internal garden is one of Paris’s most enchanting hidden gems. Meticulously manicured lawns, fragrant rose bushes, and discreet yet attentive service create a verdant oasis where guests can relax, dine, or simply enjoy a moment of peaceful contemplation amidst the bustling city.

My Wellness Experience:
Pool overall: 5/5 – A unique and relaxing experience
Spa overall: Not experienced

Fitness overall: 5/5 – Compact yet perfectly functional.
Grounds and landscaping: 5/5 – An absolute triumph of urban gardening.

Service & Moments: The Heartbeat of Le Bristol

What truly elevates Le Bristol to a league of its own is its extraordinary service based on a philosophy of anticipation, warmth, and genuine care that permeates every interaction. These aren’t just transactions; they are moments that define the Le Bristol experience.

Early Morning Room Service: Punctually at 6:45 a.m. sharp, without a sound, room service discreetly delivered a piping hot coffee and a warm, flaky croissant with gourmet jams and butter and platter of fruit directly to my room. This quiet, on-time, and considerate service ensured I could begin my workday seamlessly.

Unique Experiences:
One morning, I indulged in an early-morning espresso while catching up on emails. As I sipped my coffee, Socrate, one of the hotel’s resident Burmese cats, padded past, paused briefly, and allowed a quick chin scratch before continuing his regal patrol. It was a simple, disarmingly gentle moment that perfectly encapsulated the unique, soulful charm of Le Bristol.

Who It’s For: The Discerning Traveler

Ideal For: Le Bristol caters exquisitely to a diverse range of discerning travelers:
Families with young children and teens: The hotel’s thoughtful amenities, dedicated services, and the enchanting presence of the resident cats make it a surprisingly family-friendly home away from home.
Nightlife seekers: The sophisticated bar offers an elegant setting for pre-dinner cocktails or a refined nightcap.
Design lovers: Those who appreciate classic Parisian aesthetics, meticulous craftsmanship, and exquisitely preserved historical grandeur will find endless delight.

Anyone seeking unparalleled luxury and service: For guests who demand the absolute pinnacle of hospitality in Paris, Le Bristol stands alone.

Skip It If:
You prioritize ultra-modern, gadget-heavy interiors over classic, timeless elegance. While immaculately maintained, the hardware here favors heritage over futuristic design.

Le Bristol Paris is more than a hotel; it’s a Parisian landmark. It blends history with modern luxury. The service anticipates your needs, and the surroundings are classically French. It’s an unforgettable experience, creating cherished memories and a deep appreciation for this Parisian “Palace.”

Turkey trip with teens

There is a moment I return to often. It was past 2 a.m., and the Turkish coastline was nothing but a dark silhouette against an even darker sky.

When our family embarked on our summer holiday to Turkey, my 16-year-old son stayed behind to practice water polo, planning to join us midway through the trip. The plot twist: that midpoint happened to fall while we were sailing the Antalya coast aboard a nine-person gulet. The original plan was simple, a driver would collect him from the airport around 9 p.m. and deliver him to a meeting point where he’d rendezvous with our captain.

Then the delays began. He missed his connecting flight, rerouted himself, and didn’t land until nearly 1 a.m. By then, the “meeting location” was a dot in the middle of the Mediterranean, with no proper dock in sight. A local driver took him as far as the road allowed: a pitch-black beach where the only light came from our tiny dinghy’s lantern, bouncing across the waves toward shore.

We picked him up like something out of a spy film, no pier, no lights, just a silhouette wading into the shallows. He climbed aboard laughing, exhausted, and utterly relieved that we’d found him. Grumbling that we were extremely irresponsible parents but also “kinda chill”.

No gift I have ever given my children has matched that memory. No carefully chosen birthday present, no thoughtful holiday surprise, no beautiful object no matter how expensive or meaningful has ever been recounted at family dinners the way that night in Turkey has. This is not a failure of gift-giving. It is a truth about how human beings are wired.

Adventure travel with young kids

Having taken my children to more than 20 countries, I have witnessed firsthand what decades of psychological research now confirms: the gift of travel creates something that material possessions simply cannot replicate. It shapes who our children become, how they think, and what they remember of their childhoods long after the wrapping paper has been forgotten.

The Science of Experiences Over Things

Every photograph reviewed, every story retold, every inside joke referenced at the dinner table years later rekindles the neurological and emotional benefits of the original experience.

The research is unambiguous. Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University, has spent more than two decades studying why experiences make people happier than possessions. His findings reveal that the satisfaction we derive from material purchases fades predictably as we adapt to having them, a phenomenon psychologists call hedonic adaptation. The new car becomes just the car. The beautiful watch becomes simply the watch we wear. But experiences, particularly those shared with people we love, become part of our identity in ways that objects never do.

A 2020 study by Dr. Amit Kumar at the University of Texas at Austin reinforced these findings with a critical addition: experiences create more happiness not just during or after the event, but before it as well. His research, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, demonstrated that people report greater satisfaction from experiential purchases irrespective of when happiness is measured. The anticipation of a trip, the trip itself, and the memories afterward all contribute to a sustained sense of wellbeing that material goods simply cannot match.

Adventure travel with kids scuba diving

This brings us to dopamine, the neurotransmitter often called the brain’s “anticipation molecule.” Research from Harvard Business School by Dr. Michael Norton and his colleague Dr. Elizabeth Dunn demonstrates that dopamine is released not only when we receive a reward but when we anticipate it. Planning a vacation activates reward centers in the brain weeks or even months before departure. The excitement of researching destinations, choosing accommodations, and imagining adventures creates measurable increases in happiness. A material gift may spike dopamine briefly upon receipt, but that elevation returns to baseline within weeks. Travel, by contrast, offers three distinct phases of joy: the looking forward, the living through, and the looking back.

This is why the benefits of traveling extend far beyond the trip itself. Every photograph reviewed, every story retold, every inside joke referenced at the dinner table years later rekindles the neurological and emotional benefits of the original experience.

When Things Go Wrong, Everything Goes Right

My grandmother who had lived the first half of her life in the Soviet Union where apparently this was the best and only way to secure holiday accommodations, was unperturbed.

Here is where the research intersects with lived experience in ways that initially seem counterintuitive. The moments we remember most vividly from our travels are rarely the perfect ones. They are the misadventures, the unexpected detours, the situations that required us to adapt, problem-solve, and occasionally laugh at ourselves.

I think of the time we were driving through the Algarve region of Portugal and somehow found ourselves heading the wrong direction down a narrow, winding one-way road. For nearly a mile, we navigated hairpin turns and stone walls, unable to turn around. When we finally realized our error, we had no choice but to reverse the entire distance. We backed slowly, carefully, and ultimately right into a man’s property, where we managed to knock over and shatter his beautiful flower pot. I braced for anger. Instead, he emerged from his house with grace and humor, waving off our apologies with genuine kindness. My children still talk about that man. They do not talk about the perfectly executed days.

Travel in Europe with young children and teens

Or consider our arrival in Split, Croatia traveling with my grandmother and, at the time, two young children. In my younger days I loved using maps, the traditional old-school kind you’ll now likely only find in museums. I was adamant we could navigate without “navigation.”

Instead, we got lost. Went 25 miles in the wrong direction, ran out of phone battery, and arrived exactly in time to miss our boutique hotel’s check-in window. We found ourselves without accommodations in a city at 100% capacity.

No app could solve this. No algorithm stepped in.

So we went old school. While sorting out what to do and trying not to panic, a stranger kindly advised us we were in a pedestrian-only zone and would get a “big ticket.” Then he paused and asked if we needed a place to stay. His grandparents had passed away and left him their apartment; he rented it out to easygoing travelers who needed last-minute accommodations and had apparently never seen a scary movie. My husband was horrified. I was relieved. My grandmother who had lived the first half of her life in the Soviet Union where apparently this was the best and only way to secure holiday accommodations, was unperturbed.

Gift of travel Portugal Azores

He turned out to be extraordinarily helpful and welcoming, walked us to the apartment, gave us directions to the pier we needed to be at early in the morning and did not attempt to rob or murder us.

My children learned something that night about trusting the goodness of people, about adaptability, and about finding solutions in unfamiliar circumstances.

These are the experiences that build what psychologist Angela Duckworth calls “grit” and what author Paul Tough, in his book How Children Succeed, identifies as essential to lifelong achievement. Travel forces children into situations where persistence, resilience, and determination are not abstract concepts but immediate necessities. Research on child development consistently shows that children who encounter and overcome challenges develop stronger problem-solving abilities, greater emotional regulation, and increased confidence in their capacity to handle uncertainty.

What Travel Teaches That Classrooms Cannot

Adults who traveled regularly as children achieved above-average grades, higher educational attainment, and incomes 12% above average

The benefits of travel for kids extend well beyond character building. Cognitive research demonstrates that exposure to novel environments stimulates brain development in ways that familiar settings cannot. When children navigate new places, encounter unfamiliar languages, and adapt to different cultural norms, their brains form new neural pathways. A survey conducted by the Student & Youth Travel Association found that 76% of teachers reported increased cultural awareness in students after travel experiences. More striking still, a comprehensive study by the Travel Effect Project revealed that adults who traveled regularly as children achieved above-average grades, higher educational attainment, and incomes 12% above average compared to their less-traveled peers.

I witnessed this directly when I fell ill during a trip to Italy last month, and my children, now teenagers, had to navigate a day trip to Florence entirely on their own. They missed their first train because they had never navigated the European rail system before. They had to purchase new tickets with limited language skills. Hours of delays followed. But they made it. When they returned that evening, exhausted and proud, they had gained something no classroom could have provided: the lived experience of their own accomplishment.

Kids traveling in Austria

When my daughter was bitten by a tick while hiking in Austria, we faced the challenge of navigating European medical systems as outsiders. It was stressful in the moment. In retrospect, it was education in the deepest sense: an understanding that healthcare works differently in different places, that asking for help in an unfamiliar context requires courage, and that problems can be solved even when the rulebook is written in another language.

While stress-free family vacations are more enjoyable in the moment, having to pivot, adapt and overcome challenges actually cultivates new skills: not despite the stress but because of how families learn to manage it together.

The Nostalgia That Objects Cannot Evoke

There is a reason we do not gather around the coffee table to reminisce about the television we bought in 2015. Material possessions, no matter how beautiful or thoughtfully chosen, lack the narrative arc that memories require. They do not have a beginning, middle, and end. They do not feature characters, conflict, or resolution. They simply exist until they are replaced.

Thailand with kids

Travel, by contrast, is story. And the research on memory formation explains why these stories endure. Novel experiences are encoded more deeply because they require more cognitive processing. The brain pays closer attention when the environment is unfamiliar. This is why adults can recall details from childhood trips with startling clarity while forgetting entire years of routine. Memories shaped by strong feelings often become permanently etched in our minds. v

My children remember the taste of street food in Mexico. They remember the sound of waves against the dinghy in Turkey. They remember the expression on the Portuguese man’s face when we broke his flower pot and the relief when he smiled. These memories are not static. They evolve with each retelling, becoming richer and more meaningful as my children grow old enough to understand what they were actually learning in those moments.

A Different Kind of Investment

Children who travel learn this lesson viscerally. They learn that frustration is temporary, that problems have solutions, and that the discomfort of unfamiliarity is the price of growth.

The gift of travel is, in a meaningful sense, an investment. But unlike financial investments, the returns are not measured in currency. They are measured in perspective, in adaptability, in the capacity to feel at home in unfamiliar places. Research consistently shows that children exposed to diverse cultures develop greater empathy, stronger social competence, and more flexible thinking patterns.

For parents and grandparents considering how to invest in the young people they love, the evidence points clearly toward experiences. International family vacations are not luxuries reserved for a privileged few. They are formative experiences that shape how children understand themselves and their place in a complex world.

Kids traveling in Austria and Croatia

This is why we run marathons, sign up for difficult courses, and train for challenges that will test us. The accomplishment means more when it was hard.

Children who travel learn this lesson viscerally. They learn that frustration is temporary, that problems have solutions, and that the discomfort of unfamiliarity is the price of growth.

Planning Your Next Chapter

For families ready to embrace the gift of travel, the first step is simply to begin. Choose a destination that will stretch your family slightly beyond the familiar. Involve your children in the planning process, which itself activates those anticipatory dopamine pathways. Accept that things will go wrong and recognize that those moments may become the trip’s most valuable gifts.

Consider destinations that offer both adventure and education, places where history comes alive and where daily routines will be meaningfully disrupted. The top destinations for family travel are not necessarily the most exotic. They are the places that will challenge your family to grow together.

The Role of Expert Guidance

Europe with young kids

Navigating international travel with children requires thoughtfulness, and this is where working with a luxury travel advisor becomes invaluable. At Boutique Travel Advisors, we understand that family travel is about more than logistics. It is about creating conditions for transformation. We handle the complexity so you can focus on what matters: being present with your children as they discover the world.

The greatest gift we can give our children is not something that can be wrapped. It is the confidence that comes from solving problems, the empathy that grows from encountering differences, and the memories that will warm them for a lifetime. That gift is travel. And unlike any object, it only becomes more valuable with time.

Some journeys invite you to slow down; others stir something deeper.
For me, Vietnam was both — a place where past and present live side by side, where culture, cuisine, and connection intertwine in the most unexpected ways.

Some journeys change how you see the world; Vietnam changed how I felt it. It invites you to pause and truly be present — to notice the rhythm of scooters weaving through Hanoi’s Old Quarter, the scent of lemongrass and rain, the laughter that rises even when the skies open.

From the French-colonial boulevards of Hanoi to the lantern-lit magic of Hoi An and the vibrant rhythm of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam revealed itself in layers — refined yet raw, elegant yet electric.

It’s a country that greets you with quiet grace and leaves you with stories you’ll tell for years.

Hanoi Old Quarter

Hanoi — Where History Whispers

Hanoi is a symphony of sound and motion. In the Old Quarter, there are no streetlights or stop signs — only an unspoken choreography of scooters, bicycles, and pedestrians. The first time I stepped off the curb, my instinct was to freeze, but locals urged me to just walk. Miraculously, the swarm of motorbikes flowed around us like water — chaotic, exhilarating, and oddly graceful.

Our day began in Independence Square, where history feels alive. We visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the late leader’s body is preserved, and the Presidential Palace, a mustard-yellow relic of French architecture that still houses government offices. Flags lined every street, marking eighty years of independence from France — a reminder of both struggle and pride.

Nearby, the Temple of Literature offered a quieter reverence. Founded nearly a thousand years ago and now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was Vietnam’s first university, dedicated to Confucius. Stone steles perched on carved turtles — symbols of wisdom and longevity — stood in elegant silence beneath the banyan trees.

From there, we continued to Hỏa Lò Prison, once known as Maison Centrale. Learning how Vietnamese revolutionaries were imprisoned under French rule was sobering. Decades later, the same complex held American POWs — a place heavy with both pain and resilience.

The tone shifted as we left the city center for a private knife-making workshop with a local artisan. My husband, Phillip, forged a blade by hand under the craftsman’s patient instruction — sparks flying as metal met steel. Watching him work, I felt the essence of Vietnamese artistry: precise, patient, deeply personal.

That evening, returning to the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi felt like stepping into another time. Staying in the Opera Wing — polished wood, crisp linens, and colonial elegance — was the perfect contrast to the city’s pulse. Dinner at Spices Garden, the hotel’s Vietnamese restaurant, was refined yet soulful, each dish a masterclass in balance and flavor.

The next morning, we strolled around Hoàn Kiếm Lake, where locals practice tai chi at sunrise, and wandered to Train Street, where cafés perch beside the tracks and laughter rises as travelers sip coffee while a train barrels past.

When weather canceled our Ha Long Bay cruise, we stayed longer — relocating to the Apricot Hotel, a modern boutique overlooking the lake. That time allowed us to unwind, visit L’Essence Spa for a luxurious hair wash and hot-stone massage, and cap our stay with The Quintessence of Tonkin, an outdoor performance of music and light that brought Vietnam’s spirit to life beneath the stars.

Knife Making

Hoi An — Craft, Cuisine, and Connection

In central Vietnam, the pace softened. La Siesta Hoi An Resort & Spa became our home for four nights — first in the Classic Wing, then upgraded to an Executive Suite in the Club Wing with sweeping views of the infinity pool and rice terraces. The resort’s serenity perfectly balanced the energy beyond its gates.

Our first full day began at a bustling local market with our chef, weaving between stalls piled high with herbs, chilies, fresh fish, and tropical fruit. It was a lively glimpse of daily life — bartering with vendors, sampling produce, and choosing ingredients for our class.

From there, we glided through the Cẩm Thanh Coconut Jungle in bamboo basket boats. Palm fronds brushed our shoulders as fishermen sang and spun their boats in circles. Phillip even tried catching crabs with a woven trap, laughing with the locals as they cheered him on.

At the Hội An Tropical Cooking Class, we turned those morning finds into a feast — papaya salad, spring rolls, sizzling Vietnamese pancakes, braised chicken in clay pot, and a caramel-passion-fruit dessert that still makes my mouth water.

Cẩm Thanh Coconut Jungle

The next day was devoted to artistry. We began at a lantern workshop in a local woman’s home, stretching silk across bamboo frames as incense curled through the air — meditative and magical. Afterward, we joined the Wood Carving Art Workshop at Làng Cùi Lũ – Driftwood Village, carving small keepsakes alongside artisans who spoke more through their hands than words. We’re definitely not artists and needed plenty of help, but what a gift it was to learn these crafts directly from the people who preserve them — and to bring home such meaningful souvenirs.

That afternoon’s walking food tour became a comedy of timing: torrential rain poured down, and our “walk” turned into a sprint between the car and restaurants. It was deemed too unsafe to stroll as planned, but it didn’t dampen the experience. We ended at a tiny café with iced coconut coffee — a questionable choice in a storm but too delicious to resist — and laughed as water swirled around our ankles.

When our flight was delayed by weather, we used the extra time to finally wander through Hoi An’s Old Town in daylight, seeing lanterns drying in shopfronts and locals going about their day. At last, we stood before the Japanese Bridge, that graceful symbol of connection between cultures and centuries.

Ho Chi Minh City — Energy, Elegance, and Emotion

Saigon greeted us with tropical heat and boundless energy. The hum of motorbikes, the scent of street food, and the gleam of skyscrapers all told the story of a city constantly reinventing itself. We spent our first two nights at The Myst Dong Khoi, a boutique hotel full of character and greenery, before moving to the sleek Sofitel Saigon Plaza, where floor-to-ceiling windows framed the skyline.

Saigon Skyline

On our first day, we explored on foot — visiting the Central Post Office, a French-era masterpiece, and pausing outside Notre Dame Cathedral, its red-brick façade wrapped in scaffolding for restoration. Even under construction, it was striking — a symbol of endurance and renewal.

The next morning, we journeyed into the Mekong Delta, joining two lovely British couples for a boat ride through narrow canals shaded by coconut palms. We stopped at a coconut candy workshop, sampled local tropical fruits, and listened to traditional Vietnamese songs — a glimpse into the Delta’s gentle rhythm of life.

Then, in true travel fashion, the skies opened. A torrential downpour forced an early retreat from Unicorn Island, and by the time we returned to the mainland, we were soaked but grinning. The laughter, the rain, the spontaneity — it all became part of the memory.

On my birthday, we explored the Cu Chi Tunnels, an experience that stirred something far deeper. Listening to our guide describe how soldiers lived and fought underground, I felt a profound connection to my father, who had served nearby as a combat medic during the war. He earned three Purple Hearts and multiple Bronze Stars for saving lives in these same fields. Standing above those tunnels, seeing the traps and scars of battle, was profoundly humbling — a moment that stitched the past and present together.

That afternoon, a coffee workshop at Ca Phe Pham lightened the mood. We learned to prepare three of Vietnam’s signature coffees — egg, salted caramel, and yogurt — each one rich, indulgent, and uniquely Vietnamese.

To close out our time in Vietnam, we visited An’s Spa, where I indulged in a luxurious hair wash paired with a neck, shoulder, and foot massage. Using Google Translate to chat with the lovely women caring for me turned into laughter, stories, and connection — proof that kindness needs no common language. It was the perfect ending to an extraordinary journey.

Before leaving Saigon, I stopped by the elegant MGallery Hotel des Arts Saigon for a site visit and a leisurely buffet lunch — a final taste of Vietnamese hospitality that reminded me how seamlessly the country blends sophistication with soul.

Reflections on Luxury and Connection

As we packed our bags for the flight home, I found myself thinking about how Vietnam had surprised me at every turn. The grandeur of Hanoi’s landmarks, the artistry and warmth of Hoi An, the pulse and progress of Saigon — each revealed a different side of the same soulful country.

But what stood out most were the connections. The laughter shared over coconut coffee in a storm. The care of a spa therapist who spoke a different language but made me feel completely at home. The quiet pride of a craftsman guiding Phillip’s hands through centuries-old techniques.

Luxury, I realized, isn’t just about where you stay — though Vietnam offers that in abundance. It’s about how you feel in a place: the effortless blend of authenticity and comfort, of cultural immersion without compromise. It’s traveling with curiosity, gratitude, and the willingness to be changed.

Vietnam will stay with me — in the scent of coffee, the shimmer of lanterns, and the stories etched into my memory. It’s a destination that invites you not just to explore, but to connect.

For those who know me, you know I love travel—and not just anywhere. I want to see the world in style. That means five-star hotels, turndown chocolates, spas that erase jet lag I didn’t even know I had, and experiences that stick with you. Call it “Mama’s Way of Travel.”

My husband thinks luxury is camping in the back of his 4Runner in Colorado. (I’d honestly rather stick a needle in my eye.) I grew up loving the outdoors, but let’s be honest: I’ve always had my eye on city lights, culture, and comfort. Which brings me to Thailand—the Land of Smiles, where luxury doesn’t cost a fortune.

Why Thailand?

Safe, welcoming, easy to navigate, and surprisingly affordable, Thailand is an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Asia. You get world-class hotels and experiences for significantly less than what they’d cost in Europe.

Why Thailand

Bangkok: Sparkling temples, tuk-tuks, rooftop infinity pools, and some of the world’s best hotels, with service that is extremely high-touch.

Chiang Mai: Slower pace, rich culture, night markets, Michelin meals, and yes, $9 foot massages.

Southern Thailand: Beaches, islands, and luxury straight out of a movie set (literally—Jurassic World  IV was filmed here).

Highlights of My Journey – Elephants in Pattaya

ELEPHANTS IN PATTAYA

Thailand once had 10,000 elephants; today, conservation is vital. At an ethical sanctuary, I got to brush an elephant who politely listened when I asked her to sit. Experiences like this—seeing animals cared for ethically with a mutual respect between human and animal—are unforgettable.

Chiang Mai Nights & Culture

137 Pillars Hotel: Luxurious, intimate, and steeped in history. Fun fact: Louis, son of the widow, Anna Leonowens, whose life was the basis of the story of The King and I, lived at this location as an English trader when it was Siam. True five-star indulgence.

Anantara Chiang Mai

Anantara Chiang Mai: Nestled on the river, this hotel is elegant and serene. We had the option to dress in traditional garb to embrace the whole of the location and dine as former royalty of Thailand. Reach out to Boutique Travel Advisors to book a traditional night on their Golden Boat, where you’ll enjoy food inspired by centuries-old royal recipes created by a Michelin-starred chef. Talk about a picture-perfect experience.

Grandma's Cooking School

Photo Courtesy of Grandma’s Cooking School

Cooking Class: Don’t miss Grandma’s Cooking School for a private class. Make sure to ask for a classroom with air conditioning—you’ll thank me. I made pad thai, and oh my goodness…it was phenomenal.

Chiang Mai Night Markets: Silks, jewelry, spices, pottery, and yummy street food. Bonus: take a Vespa ride through the old city at night—wind in your hair, lights twinkling. Magic.
Bangkok Hotels

Four Seasons Bangkok

Photo Courtesy of Four Seasons Bangkok

Four Seasons Bangkok: Serene riverside luxury with a spa not to miss and one of the best bars in the world—BKK Social.

Capella Bangkok: Floor-to-ceiling river views. Fun fact: voted the best hotel in the world in 2024. Just saying.

The Siam Hotel

The Siam: Step into an antique collector’s fantasy—arrive by boat and you’re instantly transported to another era.

Southern Thailand: Barefoot Luxury

Ritz Carlton Reserve, Krabi

Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Krabi: Beds so big they could swallow you whole. Lead-in rooms are perfect for couples or honeymooners. Prepare to be shocked by the price (in a good way).

Banyan Tree Krabi: Family-friendly luxury with complimentary boat trips to the island where Jurassic World 4 was filmed.

Six Senses Koh Yao Noi

Photo Courtesy of Six Senses Koh Yao Noi

Six Senses Koh Yao Noi: Eco-luxury, private villas, treehouse-style suites, organic gardens, and panoramic Andaman Sea views.

Anantara Ko Samui: Family paradise. Bunk beds shaped like castles, bathrobes and slippers for kids, toys delivered to the room—pure magic for the little ones while keeping luxury for the adults.

Food Worth Traveling For

THAI FOOD

Forget takeout pad thai. Thai cuisine is layered, bold, and deeply tied to culture. Highlights: Michelin-starred meals in Chiang Mai, large river shrimp with roe, street food that rivals fine dining, and of course mangosteen, papaya, and passion fruit galore.

Final Word

Thailand is where adventure meets luxury without the European price tag. Rooftop cocktails, barefoot beaches, elephants, temples, river cruises, Michelin meals, and some of the world’s most stunning hotels—it’s all here, and surprisingly affordable. Reach out to Boutique Travel Advisors for a 3-week honeymoon itinerary that costs around $15,000! Amazing!

Whether it’s your first taste of Asia, a family trip, or a honeymoon escape, Thailand is waiting—with a smile.

Rest assured that all of our recommendations are made whole-heartedly with the intent of helping travelers like you discover the world authentically and responsibly.

In my prior career as a Certified Public Accountant and in business consulting, I focused intensely on data —analyzing cash flows, profit margins, and balance sheets. My work revolved around precision: identifying inefficiencies, managing risks, and optimizing resources. This discipline has stayed with me, even now as a travel agency owner and advisor. When designing journeys, I consider not only the logistics but also the value and predictability that inform travel decisions.

However, travel is so much more than numbers on a spreadsheet. Over the years, I’ve come to realize it holds a depth no data can measure. Travel is passion, freedom, and the art of letting go. It creates space for laughter, connection, and joy to take root. Children often return from these journeys with newfound confidence and a deeper sense of being seen and valued within their families. It is through travel that growth flourishes, bonds strengthen, and even families separated by distance or busy schedules can rediscover closeness.

While planning provides the necessary framework, the true return on investment is found in the unscripted moments—stories shared around a fire, the awe of experiencing something new together, and the intimacy that grows as families build lasting stories of connection. Adults often look back years later and recognize how these journeys inspired their life choices and shaped the interpersonal skills that define how they live, love, and connect with others. These shared experiences become a compass for the future, guiding generations in ways that are truly priceless.

This balance between meticulous planning and the freedom to be present is what makes travel a profound investment in life. It is not merely an indulgence but an essential component of living well and should be integrated into every family’s long-term vision.

Travel as Part of Life Planning

family travel

Travel is often regarded as a luxury or a decision made impulsively, woven into the calendar based on passion or immediate desires, such as deciding where to go for a child’s spring break or planning a summer getaway. However, it is time to shift the narrative towards a more thoughtful and strategic approach to travel planning.

Just as we carefully consider investments in education or retirement, travel too should be approached with the same level of strategic foresight. Instead of treating it as an afterthought or a spontaneous decision, integrating travel into our long-term financial and lifestyle planning can significantly enhance its value. By doing so, we ensure that travel is not just a fleeting pleasure but a well-thought-out investment that enriches our lives and deepens family bonds.

Strategic travel planning involves setting clear goals, understanding the financial implications, and recognizing the profound impact that carefully chosen journeys can have on personal growth and family relationships. This approach not only elevates the experience but also ensures that each trip is aligned with broader life goals and contributes meaningfully to our legacy.

We encourage our clients to see travel as part of their life plan. It is as important to consider how you will spend time with the people you love as it is to plan what you will one day pass down to them. Travel is the bridge between the two—where resources are transformed into experiences, and experiences become legacy.

There are the near-term experiences that restore balance: long weekends, cultural getaways, and annual traditions that bring rhythm to busy lives. And then there are the milestone journeys: the celebrations that draw extended family together—a safari, a month in Tuscany, an experience at sea, or a pilgrimage to a place of deep meaning. Both matter. How you plan for them, however, may vary. Keeping a longer-term vision in mind makes the shorter trips feel more intentional and allows all journeys to complement one another. By anticipating the larger investments alongside the smaller escapes, families can diversify their experiences, create a sense of balance, and better manage overall costs.

What the Research Shows

travel planning

We’ve seen first-hand, working with families, that a more intentional method of travel planning yields a more enriching lifestyle and reinforces the value of travel. Research strongly supports this, showing that travel is not simply leisure—it is an investment with measurable returns.

A 2025 meta-analysis titled I Need a Vacation: A Meta-Analysis of Vacation and Employee Well-Being found that vacations deliver a significant boost to well-being, especially when individuals disconnect from work and engage in physical or novel experiences. Importantly, the benefits persist for weeks after returning home, underscoring that the positive impact of travel endures long after unpacking your luggage and returning to daily routines.

ScienceDaily reports on the University of Georgia’s findings that longer, intentional breaks where travelers truly “unplug” psychologically create more lasting benefits than short escapes or vacations interrupted by work demands. This speaks to the value of thoughtful planning: carving out time where families can be fully present delivers a stronger return than simply squeezing in travel when convenient.

The family dimension is equally compelling. A comprehensive literature review from Texas A&M University found that travel improves family communication, strengthens marriages, and increases overall happiness for both children and adults. The authors concluded that family travel “fosters closeness, interaction, and shared memories that create stronger family capital.” Beyond shared memories, children benefit by learning adaptability, curiosity, and respect for other cultures—skills that shape how they approach their own lives.

Even before the first suitcase is packed, the act of planning delivers dividends. Research from the Institute for Applied Positive Research found that 97% of respondents reported being happier simply from having travel planned, and 71% reported lower stress levels when they had future travel to anticipate. This anticipation creates a sense of control, excitement, and direction, adding joy to daily life well in advance of the journey itself.

And as National Geographic reported, the anticipation of a trip is often as rewarding as the journey itself, boosting mental health, creating shared excitement within families, and giving people something to look forward to together. This cycle of planning, experiencing, and remembering travel creates ripples of happiness, health, and connection that extend well beyond the trip itself—impacting how we live, how we love, and how we influence others.

Together, these findings provide real evidence of the return on investment of travel. Beyond enjoyment, travel enhances happiness, strengthens health, teaches children lessons they carry for a lifetime, and magnifies the positive impact we have on others.

Travel Planning and Living the Investment

At Boutique Travel Advisors, we bring the structure needed to ensure that trips are thoughtfully designed—but we also know that the greatest wealth comes from what unfolds in the moment.

One grandfather and father came to us with a vision: they wanted to gather their family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for a week that would be seamless yet full of discovery. We planned the framework: a private barbecue inside Grand Teton National Park, a scavenger hunt crafted by their guide, evenings at a rodeo under the stars, and days filled with hiking and kayaking in breathtaking scenery. Every detail balanced adventure with time to relax, making sure that grandparents, parents, and children could enjoy the experience together. For more inspiration on how families can elevate their time in Jackson Hole, explore our five-night family adventure itinerary.

But the most valuable moments weren’t on the itinerary. Grandchildren tugging their grandfather’s sleeve to point out a moose. Laughter carrying across the night as stories were shared around a crackling fire. Even small disagreements—about which trail to take or who sat where at dinner—became opportunities to slow down, talk, and reconnect. For families who are often separated by distance or swept up in day-to-day busyness, this extended time together created space to listen and be heard. Teens returned home reporting greater confidence and independence, and parents saw new maturity in how their children communicated and participated in decisions.

Another family entrusted us with planning a month-long villa stay in Tuscany. Their ninety-year-old grandmother had long dreamed of visiting the Vatican. What made the experience unforgettable was a captivating moment when she met the Pope, close enough for that treasured photograph she now cherishes. For her, it marked the culmination of a lifelong hope. For her children and grandchildren, it became the gift of witnessing her joy and sharing in her fulfillment. Together, they spent their days lingering over meals, wandering through vineyards, and discovering the richness of Italy. Beyond the beauty of the setting, these experiences bonded three generations, leaving memories that continue to shape this family’s future.

We have also seen extended family members use travel as a way of giving meaningful holiday gifts. One aunt, knowing her family well, surprised her sister and niece with the mother-daughter trip they had always envisioned—Thanksgiving in New York with Broadway shows, ice skating at Rockefeller Center, and holiday dinner in the city. At the same time, she gave her nephew something entirely different, an adventure that matched his growing independence and love of the outdoors: a Backroads journey through Iceland filled with biking, hiking, and kayaking among glaciers and waterfalls. Each gift reflected not just generosity, but an understanding of what would resonate most deeply with the recipient—connection and shared memories for one, freedom and adventure for the other.

Families often involve children directly in the planning process. Some parents ask their kids to research destinations and present their findings—turning travel planning into a project that teaches responsibility, curiosity, and communication skills. The result is a trip that children feel invested in, making them more engaged during the experience and more likely to carry its lessons forward.

These stories remind us that while planning ensures the logistics are flawless, the true return on investment is found in the laughter, the inside jokes, and the memories that become part of a family’s collective identity. Unlike financial assets, the dividends of travel cannot be measured on a balance sheet—they compound in joy, wisdom, and legacy.

As Og Mandino wrote: “The greatest legacy we can leave our children is happy memories.”

Confidence Through Guidance

family travel

Still, many families hesitate. It’s not always about whether they can afford to travel, but rather not knowing where to begin—what the planning process looks like, what to expect in terms of investment, or how to balance travel with other financial priorities. This is where professional guidance makes all the difference, turning a vision into a reality.

A financial or estate planner can provide clarity about what feels comfortable and sustainable. A travel advisor ensures those resources are transformed into experiences of lasting value. Together, they give families the confidence to say “yes” to journeys that might otherwise remain on the horizon.

We often help families think about their travels across different seasons of life: the rhythm of annual escapes, the planning for milestone journeys every few years, and the once-in-a-lifetime experiences that deserve foresight. It is not about treating travel as an account to be balanced—it is about recognizing it as a vital part of living well, raising confident and connected children, and making space for it with intention.

As Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Travel as Living Legacy

Financial assets are important, but experiences are what shape a family’s identity. Increasingly, families tell us they want to use their wealth not only to provide, but to participate. They do not want to wait until their estate is divided; they want to gift journeys while they are still present to share them.

Multi-generational travel has become one of the most meaningful ways families choose to spend their resources. Sometimes it is grandparents inviting everyone—children and grandchildren—for a shared journey that brings the whole family together. Other times, it may be grandparents taking their grandchildren on a special adventure while the parents enjoy their own vacation or simply relish a quiet house at home. These experiences allow families who are far apart to close the gap, strengthen communication, and even mend relationships that need attention.

At Boutique Travel Advisors, we see it often: families using travel not just to see the world, but to create the shared stories that anchor them. The children return home more independent and self-assured. Adults look back and see how these trips shaped their choices: the kind of careers they pursued, the communities they joined, the relationships they cultivated, and the family values they are now instilling in their own children.

As Kevin Heath so aptly said: “In the end, kids won’t remember that fancy toy you bought them, they will remember the time you spent with them.”

How to Begin the Conversation

travel planning

When families begin to think of travel as part of their life planning, the first step is often simply starting the conversation—with both a financial planner and a travel advisor. It doesn’t need to be complicated. You might ask:

  • What role do we want travel to play in our family’s life over the next decade?
  • Which experiences matter most to us—restorative weekends, cultural immersions, or milestone journeys?
  • How can we make space for those experiences in a way that feels both joyful and sustainable?

These are not questions about budgets alone. They are questions about values, about how you want to spend your most precious resource—time—and about how you want your story to be told. A financial planner can provide clarity on the “how,” while a travel advisor can inspire and design the “what.” Together, they help families ensure that travel is not an afterthought, but a core part of a well-lived life.

A Legacy Worth Living

I began in numbers, and I remain analytical. But what I’ve learned is that the most meaningful investments are not found on balance sheets. They are found in the laughter of a child spotting wildlife in the Tetons, in a grandmother’s radiant joy as she meets the Pope, in the meals shared, the sunsets watched, and the stories retold.

Travel is both structure and freedom: carefully designed, yet lived openly. It is not indulgence; it is investment in the truest sense—an investment in joy, in connection, in legacy.

If travel is not yet part of your life planning, something vital is missing. Because while you can pass down assets, the most enduring legacy you can leave is time spent together—discovering the world, strengthening bonds, and creating memories that grow more valuable with every retelling.

Or, as the old wisdom reminds us:

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” — Anonymous

A Note for Professionals:

If you are a financial planner, estate lawyer, or other professional, we welcome the chance to connect and share how travel can be part of the conversation around investing in a life well lived. As we learn how our clients and services align, we would value the opportunity to collaborate in thoughtful ways — whether through dialogue, education, or shared resources. We believe that travel, when planned with intention, offers a return on investment that goes beyond numbers — measured instead in joy, connection, and the lasting happiness it brings to families.

When travelers think of cruising, they often picture sprawling mega-ships with casinos and theaters. But expedition cruising is something altogether different—it’s about discovery, connection, and immersion. Recently, I had the privilege of joining HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) on their MS Roald Amundsen, journeying from Vancouver through Alaska’s wild coastlines and onward to Nome. It was an unforgettable reminder of how travel can enrich not just your itinerary, but your soul.

Why HX?

WHY HX

HX Cruises has quickly become a leader in expedition travel. Their rebrand in 2023 emphasized their commitment to sustainability and innovation, and their ships reflect that—hybrid-powered engines, Scandinavian-inspired design, onboard science centers, and a warm, casual atmosphere. Unlike traditional cruising, every moment feels curated to foster a deeper connection with the places you’re exploring.

Highlights of the Experience

What truly set this voyage apart were the thoughtful details and the people who made the journey unforgettable:

Exceptional Expedition Team

An Exceptional Expedition Team: The expertise onboard was remarkable. From geologists and naturalists to biologists, birding specialists, and professional photographers, the diversity of knowledge added depth to every excursion and lecture. Their passion was contagious, turning each landing into a learning adventure.

Freedom to Personalize
Freedom to Personalize: I loved the flexibility to shape my days around what fascinated me most. I leaned toward wildlife and glacier excursions, while others chose hiking or cultural encounters. This ability to curate your own experience makes HX a perfect match for travelers with different passions and energy levels.

Relaxation Meets Adventure
Relaxation Meets Adventure: After days filled with exploration, the ship became a haven. Whether it was unwinding in the sauna or hot tub, taking a swim, enjoying a workout in the gym, indulging at the spa, or sipping a cocktail in the Explorer Lounge, there was always the perfect way to recharge.

capturing the memories
Capturing the Memories: Having professional photographers onboard was a gift. Their skill ensured that I could fully immerse myself in the moment without worrying about missing the perfect shot—a luxury that made the experience even richer.

Thoughtful Memento
A Thoughtful Memento:
Every guest receives the signature HX expedition jacket, a high-quality piece of gear that’s both practical and stylish. Since returning home, it’s become a wonderful conversation starter and a reminder of the journey.

A Voyage Unlike Any Other

Our journey began in Vancouver, weaving through the Inside Passage’s forested fjords before heading north to Alaska’s majestic landscapes. Each day brought a new highlight:

misty fjords

  • Misty Fjords: Towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls shaped by glaciers.

wrangell & sitka

  • Wrangell & Sitka: Immersions in indigenous and Russian heritage.

icy bay

  • Icy Bay: its towering tidewater glaciers, drifting icebergs, and stark silence create an awe-inspiring landscape.

kodiak island

  • Kodiak Island & Katmai National Park: Watching brown bears in the wild, alongside whales and sea otters.

aleutian islands

  • Aleutian Islands: Ghost towns, seabird sanctuaries, and remote bays few travelers will ever set foot in.

St. Paul & St. Matthew Islands

  • St. Paul & St. Matthew Islands: Some of the most isolated—and breathtaking—landscapes on Earth.Nome
  • Nome: Steeped in Gold Rush history, and once the landing point for Roald Amundsen himself.

Life Onboard the MS Roald Amundsen

LIFE ON BOARD

Every corner of the ship reflected a blend of Scandinavian design and expedition-ready innovation. Floor-to-ceiling windows, cozy lounges, and the immersive Science Center made downtime just as rewarding as time ashore.

My favorite spot was the top deck, offering 360° views of fjords, glaciers, wildlife, and spectacular sunsets. For future travelers, I strongly recommend booking a balcony cabin—it’s the best way to stay connected to the landscapes around you.

The vibe onboard was informal yet engaging. Guests and staff connected naturally, with conversations flowing easily and without pretense. It was refreshing to feel part of a community where everyone shared the same spirit of discovery.

The warmth of the staff stood out, I felt a sense of familiarity as crew members greeted me by name and remembered the little details. Their thoughtfulness created a personal, welcoming atmosphere.

Who Should Consider This Journey?

If you’re new to expedition cruising, this itinerary is a fantastic introduction. It’s paced to allow plenty of exploration without feeling overwhelming. For seasoned adventurers, it offers rare access to remote islands and cultural gems that few ships ever reach.

A Paradise for Wildlife Enthusiasts

WILDLIFE

One of the most rewarding aspects of this expedition is the incredible variety of wildlife you can encounter along the way. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, this voyage is truly a dream come true. Depending on the season and conditions, travelers often spot:

  • Marine life: Humpback whales, orcas, harbor seals, sea lions, otters, and even salmon runs in action.
  • Birdlife: Bald eagles soaring overhead, tufted puffins nesting along cliffs, and other rare seabird species unique to this region.
  • Land mammals: Both brown and black bears foraging along the shoreline—sometimes even hunting salmon in the streams.

Whether you’re on the deck with binoculars or joining a guided small-boat excursion, every day offers the chance to witness nature at its most raw and spectacular.

Sustainability at the Core

HX is pioneering eco-conscious travel, banning heavy fuel oil and single-use plastics, while investing in hybrid-powered ships that reduce emissions by up to 20%. As a travel advisor committed to responsible tourism, I deeply value their leadership in sustainable cruising.

Why Book with Us?

At Boutique Travel Advisors , we help match travelers to experiences that align with their passions—whether that’s wildlife, culture, photography, or simply seeking the extraordinary. Expedition cruising with HX is about discovery and connection, and this Vancouver-to-Nome voyage is a journey that will stay with you forever.

If you’d like to learn more about HX or explore upcoming expedition itineraries, I’d be delighted to guide you through the options. This could be your year to experience one of the last frontiers.

Visiting Alaska feels like stepping into another world—a land where glaciers carve the earth, wildlife thrives in its natural habitat, and vast, untouched landscapes stretch endlessly. On my recent trip, I was able to experience a mix of charming towns, breathtaking trails, and thrilling adventures that made this journey unforgettable.

Juneau: Whales, Glaciers, and Trails

Juneau

In Juneau, the highlight for me was a whale-watching tour More Info here. Here, you are guaranteed to see whales—and I was lucky enough to spot orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, and sea otters. It was absolutely magical.

Of course, no visit to Juneau is complete without seeing the Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls. While some visitors hike all the way in, I found that simply viewing the glacier and waterfall—an easy stop of about 20 minutes—was enough. You don’t need to book a tour, but you will need a car to get there.

Downtown Juneau is a gem in its own right, with charming local shops and unique souvenirs that capture the spirit of Alaska. One evening, as the sun set, I was treated to an unexpected thrill—a young black bear wandering near downtown.

For hikers, the Gold Creek Trail and Perseverance Trail offer rewarding treks into the surrounding mountains. From downtown, you can also catch the Mount Roberts Tramway for sweeping views, though personally, I found the hikes offered a more authentic experience. If you’re looking to splurge, consider booking a Tracy Arm Fjord tour directly from downtown. While it’s on the pricier side, the towering cliffs, waterfalls, and glaciers make it an unforgettable adventure.

Anchorage: Moose and Coastal Views

Anchorage

Anchorage really surprised me with how much wildlife you can encounter right in and around the city. One of the best examples of this is the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, a local favorite that feels like a slice of wilderness tucked into an urban setting. Spanning about 11 miles from downtown’s Second Avenue all the way to Kincaid Park, the trail hugs the coast of Cook Inlet, winding through marshes, spruce forests, and rolling coastal hills.

I’d highly recommend experiencing it by bike—you get the best rhythm for taking in the scenery. On one side you’ve got the ocean opening up with views across the inlet, and on the other, dense forest and shrubs where moose love to wander. In fact, this is where I saw several moose up close, a reminder that in Anchorage, nature doesn’t sit politely in the distance; it’s right there alongside you.

The ride also has plenty of interesting stops along the way:

  • Westchester Lagoon: an early highlight on the trail, is perfect for birdwatching and even ice-skating when winter sets in.
  • Earthquake Park: tells the dramatic story of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, with interpretive signs marking where the land literally slid into the inlet.
  • Point Woronzof is both a scenic overlook and a thrill—you can watch massive planes descend toward Anchorage’s airport, so close it feels like they’re skimming just overhead.

We also visited downtown Anchorage, where you’ll find a few souvenir shops and local eateries. A cultural stop worth making is the Anchorage Museum, which offers a wonderful mix of art and Alaskan history.

Seward & Kenai Fjords National Park: Glaciers and Marine Wildlife

Seward

From Anchorage, we made a day trip to Seward, a charming coastal town that serves as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. We booked a full-day cruise (about 7–8 hours), and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. More info here

The journey took us through breathtaking fjords where towering cliffs meet icy waters, and the wildlife sightings were incredible. We saw orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, puffins, and even witnessed a glacier calving—watching massive chunks of ice tumble into the ocean is an awe-inspiring sight you’ll never forget.

From a distance, we passed two glaciers before approaching a massive tidewater glacier up close. The sheer size and sound of the ice cracking and plunging into the sea was humbling, a reminder of Alaska’s raw, powerful beauty.

Denali National Park: Wilderness and Wildlife

Denali

Denali is a vast wilderness—over six million acres of untamed land where towering mountains, glacial valleys, and wild rivers set the stage for unforgettable adventures. Private vehicles are only allowed up to mile 15 of the park road, and currently the road is open only until mile 43 due to safety concerns.

To truly experience Denali, you’ll want to hop on one of the official park buses. Options include non-narrated transit buses for a simple ride into the park, or narrated tour buses where guides share insights along the way. The Natural History Tour focuses on culture and geology, while the Tundra Wilderness Tour takes you deeper into the backcountry for a better chance of wildlife encounters.

The landscapes were breathtaking at every turn, but the Horseshoe Lake Trail was a personal favorite—is not an easy hike but the views are worth it. If you’re into camping, traveling by RV is another rewarding way to immerse yourself in the park’s wild character.

Just 15 minutes from the entrance, you’ll also find a cluster of charming shops offering unique Denali souvenirs, a perfect stop after a day of exploring.

Wrangell–St. Elias National Park: Glacier, Ice Caves and Adventure

Wrangell

The drive to Wrangell–St. Elias National Park is long—about two hours on gravel roads—but every mile is worth it. This vast park rises from the ocean all the way up to 18,008 feet and spans a staggering 13.2 million acres—the same size as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Switzerland combined. Wrangell–St. Elias is filled with opportunities for adventure, and for me, it was the highlight of my Alaska journey.

The drive is long—about two hours on gravel roads—but every mile is worth it. We based ourselves in the historic town of Kennicott and joined St Elias Alpine Guides, where I experienced three unforgettable adventures:

  • Ice Cave Exploration: My absolute favorite. The adventure begins with a rugged hike across rocky moraine before descending into hidden ice caves that appear from the outside like ordinary dirt-covered hills. Step inside, however, and you’re surrounded by glittering blue chambers of ice. At one point, we entered through one side of a cave and exited through the other—an otherworldly experience I’ll never forget. Because this is a private tour, the guides adjust the pace and level of challenge to your group’s comfort. Learn more here.
  • Half-Day Glacier Hike: After a short hike through the valley, we strapped on crampons and set foot on the Root Glacier itself. Walking across a living glacier, sipping fresh glacial meltwater, and peering into crevasses felt surreal. My brother even plunged into a frigid glacier pool—a freezing but unforgettable thrill! Details here.
  • Kennecott Mill Town Tour: Once a booming copper mining hub, the mill town of Kennecott is now a fascinating relic of Alaska’s past. We explored its towering 14-story mill building, worker housing, and other historic structures while guides brought the stories of this early 1900s industrial town to life. Walking through the red wooden buildings against the backdrop of glaciers and mountains felt like stepping back in time. More info here.

Other travelers we met raved about rafting and paddling trips on the area’s wild rivers—some even called it the highlight of their entire Alaska adventure. If you’re craving adrenaline and breathtaking scenery, it’s definitely worth considering. See rafting options here.

And if your budget allows, you can take your experience to new heights with a flightseeing tour over Wrangell–St. Elias. Flying above endless glaciers and landing in the middle of the icefields is a once-in-a-lifetime way to see just how massive and untouched this wilderness really is. Explore flights here.

From hidden ice caves to glacier hikes and historic mining relics, Wrangell–St. Elias delivers some of the most extraordinary adventures Alaska has to offer.

Why South Alaska?

Alaska is a land of contrasts—where glaciers meet the ocean, wildlife roams freely, and every corner feels like an untouched frontier. What makes it so special is that each region offers a completely different kind of adventure:

  • Juneau– the place for unforgettable whale watching and bear encounters, paired with glaciers and coastal charm.
  • Anchorage– a gateway to trails and parks where moose wander freely, with coastal paths perfect for biking and exploring.
  • Denali– six million acres of pure wilderness, where towering mountains and sweeping tundra set the stage for bears, hiking, and once-in-a-lifetime adventures.
  • Wrangell–St. Elias– the crown jewel for adventurers, with hidden ice caves, glacier treks, historic mining towns, and flightseeing tours that put you right in the heart of Alaska’s vast icefields.

Alaska isn’t just one destination—it’s many, each offering its own magic. Whether you’re drawn to wildlife, history, wilderness, or pure adventure, Alaska gives you the rare chance to step into a world that still feels wild and untamed.

Vancouver is one of those cities that feels like it was designed for summer travelers. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, it offers a rare blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and natural beauty. Whether you’re looking for serene moments in nature, indulgent culinary discoveries, or cultural gems, this Canadian jewel delivers.

Stanley Park

Stanley Park: The Soul of Vancouver

Every journey to Vancouver should begin with Stanley Park, the city’s crown jewel. I started my day at Prospect Point Lookout, where sweeping views of the Lions Gate Bridge and the coastal mountains set the tone. From there, I followed the Seawall (east), one of the most iconic walks in North America. Biking this route offers an effortless way to take in skyline views, totem poles, and the tranquil Rose and Shakespeare Gardens. The Lost Lagoon provides a peaceful finale before heading into downtown.

Downtown

Downtown Highlights

Downtown Vancouver is best explored on foot. Start at Harbour Park and head to Coal Harbour, where seaplanes glide across the water, then wander toward Canada Place, the city’s cruise port and architectural landmark. From here, the scenery opens up to mountain vistas, cargo ships, and vibrant harbor activity.

For a panoramic view of the entire city, the Vancouver Lookout is a must. Cultural travelers will also appreciate the Vancouver Art Gallery, while shoppers and foodies can indulge along Robson Street.

gastown

Gastown Charm

No visit is complete without experiencing Gastown. With cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and the famous steam clock, Gastown blends historic charm with a lively dining scene. I stopped for artisan ice cream and enjoyed live music—an ideal way to spend a summer afternoon.

Granville

By Water and by Garden

Another highlight was Granville Island, a hub of gourmet treats, artisan crafts, and fresh flowers. Arrive by False Creek Ferry—a charming way to hop between Science World, Yaletown, and the Maritime Museum. A day pass allows unlimited rides, perfect for exploring at leisure.

For nature lovers, the VanDusen Botanical Garden is an oasis of themed landscapes, from Japanese maples to blooming roses. Don’t miss the fun hedge maze if traveling with children

SUNSETS & BEACHES

Beaches and Sunsets

Vancouver’s beaches are where locals and travelers come together. English Bay and Sunset Beach are iconic spots to end your day, but my personal favorite was Kitsilano Beach, with its expansive shoreline, skyline views, and vibrant energy. I was fortunate to witness the Festival of Lights, a summer fireworks event that illuminates the bay with color and music—an unforgettable experience.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park & Grouse Mountain

Beyond the City

For those with extra time, a quick trip across the harbor brings you to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and Grouse Mountain, where you can pair adventure with breathtaking alpine views. And if you’re extending your stay, consider a day trip to Whistler or Victoria for even more luxury escapes.

Final Thoughts

Vancouver is an ideal summer destination for U.S. travelers seeking a blend of urban excitement and natural tranquility. In as little as three days, you can experience gardens, beaches, cultural landmarks, and culinary delights—all wrapped in the laid-back elegance of the Pacific Northwest.

Bonus!

Plane view

Don’t forget to take in the view from the plane—it’s part of the magic.

Victoria, British Columbia is one of those rare destinations that truly feels like stepping into a postcard. From scenic ferry rides and vibrant gardens to castle views and afternoon tea, every corner of the city is brimming with charm. Whether you’re a nature lover, history buff, or simply craving a coastal escape, here’s a recap of my day in Victoria — a blend of highlights, favorite finds, and optional gems for your own perfect itinerary.

🛳 Getting There: Scenic Routes & First Impressions

I had planned to catch the 6:00 a.m. ferry from Vancouver… but ended up on the second one. The route is breathtakingly scenic as it weaves between forested islands and, fun fact: you actually cross into U.S. waters briefly before returning to Canada.

If you’re taking the ferry, layer up. A fleece and windbreaker are essential for enjoying the breezy outdoor decks where you’ll want to be soaking in the views.

Want something quicker? There’s also the option of flying in. The seaplane ride takes just 35 minutes and offers jaw-dropping aerial views of the islands and coastline.

BUTCHART GARDENS

Butchart Gardens: A Living Work of Art

First stop: the famous Butchart Gardens — a 55-acre explosion of color and serenity. You can explore it in about 90 minutes, and while there’s a suggested route, you can also wander. Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Sunken Garden: A former quarry turned fairytale landscape
  • Rose Garden: Bursting with over 250 varieties
  • Japanese Garden: Tranquil paths and peaceful ponds
  • Italian Garden: Elegant symmetry and fountains

I stopped for lunch at the gardens’ restaurant and had the seafood pesto pasta — fresh, flavorful, and the perfect mid-day indulgence.

VICTORIA HIGHLIGHTS

Victoria: Downtown Highlights

From Butchart Gardens, I headed downtown and booked the Hop-On Hop-Off bus, but if you want something more private you can definetly arrange a private driver.

This area (part of historic Chinatown) features colorful Victorian storefronts, funky boutiques, and Gold Rush roots. Don’t miss Fan Tan Alley, one of the narrowest streets in North America.

Nearby, you can find Bastion Square What was once the site of the historical Fort Victoria is now a lively plaza filled with galleries and sidewalk restaurants.

Just a short ride away, this whimsical floating neighborhood is full of colorful houseboats, fish-and-chips stands, and casual eateries. Locals say you might even spot seals! All of this might take you around an hour.

Inner Harbour & The Empress

Stroll along the harbor promenade and admire the Legislative Assembly of BC — you can even take a guided tour inside. Across the street, you’ll find The Fairmont Empress, Victoria’s crown jewel.

If you do just one “iconic” thing in Victoria, make it afternoon tea at the Empress. It’s not just a meal — it’s an experience full of fine china, scones, and a timeless elegance that captures the spirit of the city. Be sure to book in advance.

Exploring Victoria: Choose your own Adventure

🏙 Cook Street Village & Oak Bay Coastal Route

If you want to explore beyond downtown, I highly recommend a detour through Cook Street Village — a charming, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood perfect for grabbing a coffee, browsing local shops, or just soaking up the village vibe. From there, continue along the Oak Bay coastal route, a scenic drive that winds past breathtaking viewpoints and quiet beaches. Stop at the Oak Bay Marina for sweeping views of the San Juan Islands, enjoy a peaceful walk along Willows Beach. This stretch of the trip could take around 20 minutes to an hour depending on how much time you spend on the local shops or drinking a coffee.

🏰 Craigdarroch Castle & Government House Gardens

  • Craigdarroch Castle: Step inside this beautifully restored Victorian mansion. The architecture, furnishings, and stained glass tell the story of a Scottish baron’s legacy. (~60–90 minutes)
  • Government House Gardens: Free to enter and absolutely stunning. Explore the duck pond, herb garden, English country blooms, and peaceful walking paths. (~45 minutes)

🖼 Royal BC Museum

  • A great rainy-day option or history fix — this museum showcases Indigenous culture, local history, and natural wonders. You’ll find original totem poles and immersive exhibits. (~2 hours)

Sunset Ferry Back to Vancouver

To end the day, I caught the 9:00 p.m. ferry back — and I highly recommend it. The sky lit up in shades of gold, peach, and violet as we sailed through the islands. It was the perfect, peaceful finale to a truly magical day.

Quick Tips:

  • 🧥 Bring layers, even in summer — especially for ferry rides and coastal stops.
  • 🍵 Book afternoon tea at The Empress in advance. It fills up quickly.
  • 🚌 Budget-conscious? Use the Hop-On Hop-Off bus or local buses (download the Umo app).
  • ✈️ Short on time? Fly into Victoria and ferry back at sunset.
  • 🌊 Always take the scenic route — trust me on this one.

Victoria is elegance wrapped in nature — where seaside strolls meet manicured gardens and historic castles share space with beachy hideaways. Whether you’re chasing blooms, sipping tea, or watching the sky melt into the sea, this little city delivers big-time.
